I recently re-watched Ruthless People (1986), the hilarious, iconic comedy starring Danny DeVito, Bette Midler, Helen Slater, and Judge Reinhold. DeVito is hilarious here as the sleazy businessman who steals key fashion ideas from the Slater character, and then she and her husband (Reinhold) kidnap DeVito's wife (Midler) in retaliation, and demand a ransom.
What makes the film so funny & memorable are the great story & characters; Slater & Reinhold are fantastic as the inept, likeable kidnappers who are extremely nice & polite to Midler, despite having kidnapped her & being upset at her husband. They are the complete opposite of what you would expect "ruthless" kidnappers to be like, which is obviously the whole point here - LOL.
And, DeVito is hilarious as the sleaze bag who pretends to be upset that his wife has been kidnapped, but who is actually happy about it - since he was planning on getting rid of her anyway, to get all of her money...so he could then run off with his girlfriend - LOL. He definitely seems to be channeling the greedy, amoral Louie Di Palma character that he depicted in Taxi (which had ended only three years before). Quote
