Nick Nolte and Christopher Walken were considered for the role but Al Pacino and Burt Reynolds turned it down.

Will Smith turned down the role of Neo in The Matrix. Tom Selleck was supposed to play Indiana Jones but couldn't due to some sort of riff over a contract with Magnum PI and CBS.......

Just read that Mel Gibson turned down the Russell Crowe role in Gladiator and LOL it said Travolta turned down Tom Hanks's role in Forrest Gump sorry dunno why that seems funny guess it's because of Travolta's limited acting range........

Anne Hathaway turned down the Knocked Up role which went to Katherine Heigl woooooo big suprise there lol. She seems to stuffy to fit the part anyways. Robert Redford was offered the role in The Graduate that ended up going to Dustin Hoffman. I also just read that Van Damme turned down a role in Stallone's upcoming "The Expendables" movie because Stallone was only interested in money and action and not plot. When did Van Damme become a serious actor? Tom Hanks has turned down tons of roles like Field of Dreams in which he was offered the Ray Kinsella role. He also turned down the role of Andy in The Shawshank Redemption and the lead role in Jerry Maguire. Hasn't really hurt Hanks though as far as bankability. Mark Wahlberg turned down the Linus role in Ocean's 11. Leo DiCaprio turned down the Dirk Diggler role in Boogie Nights which obviously didn't hurt him either. Gillian Anderson was offered the Bethany Sloane role in Dogma (great movie by the way) but turned it down.........

Robert Redford, Ryan O'Neal, and--can you just imagine it?--Sylvester Stallone all turned down the opportunity to be Superman 30 years ago before Christopher Reeve made the part his own.

Wasn't Leo Dicaprio up for the role that Christian Bale played in American Psycho?

Kurt Russell actually auditioned for Han Solo, he would've been a good choice as well.

Riptide, yes Dicaprio was lined up for the Patrick Bateman part, again, he wouldn't have been a bad choice either.

Jean Claude Van Damme became a serious actor last year after his movie JCVD.

Tom Cruise had to turn down Enemy Of The State (due to Eyes Wide Shut) which went to Will Smith, Nicolas Cage was close to signing for The Wrestler, he also turned down the agent Sands role in Once Upon A Time In Mexico, Cage's old friend Johnny Depp took the role. And for the sweet Souvenir: Cage didn't get the part of Dallas in The Outsiders (Matt Dillon was cast) then turned down a part as Two-Bit Matthews (which went to Emilio Estevez).

- Richard Gere has made a career out of John Travolta's mistakes. He got the lead in American Gigolo, An Officer and a Gentleman, and much later on, Chicago, when Travolta passed to do weaker projects.

- John Wayne was the original choice to play Dirty Harry, but objected to the film's gritty violence and the character's anti-hero persona.

- Gene Hackman has famously turned down a number of big parts including Randall Patrick McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest, Brody in Jaws, Howard Beale in Network, Han Solo in Star Wars, Roy Neary in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Hannibal Lector in The Silence of the Lambs.

- Sissy Spacek and Dennis Quaid both turned down the leads in Urban Cowboy. In Spacek's case, that turned out to be a fortuitous decision since she went on to win a Best Actress Oscar for Coal Miner's Daughter.

- Debra Winger turned down leads in Taxi Driver, The Blue Lagoon, Peggy Sue Got Married, Broadcast News, Fatal Attraction, The Accused, Bull Durham, The Fabulous Baker Boys, Music Box, and A League of Their Own.

- Julie Christie turned down leads in They Shoot Horses Don't They?, Anne of a Thousand Days, Rosemary's Baby, Valley of the Dolls, Nicholas and Alexandra, American Gigolo, Chinatown, The Godfather, Marathon Man, The Greek Tycoon, Reds, and The Verdict.

The way director Mary Harron explained it, Christian Bale was her first and only choice to play Patrick Bateman. Then at some point Leonardo DiCaprio expressed interest in the part and Lion's Gate fired Bale hoping to get him instead. This caused her to quit in protest and Oliver Stone was brought in as her replacement. Then Leo flaked out (most likely because the lead in Titanic became available) and Oliver Stone's budget soared to ridiculous levels. So Harron and Bale were brought back in. Real early on - before Harron was even hired - both Brad Pitt and Edward Norton were offered the part and turned it down. Cameron Diaz also passed on the Evelyn Williams role and James Woods passed on the role of Detective Kimble.

Stallone would have been hilarious as Superman! Could you even imagine? [Eek!]

I was just thinking the same thing! What would have been his most famous line if he were Superman?- "Yo, Lois!"

And of course let's not forget we might have had a more star studded Ghostbusters, had Belushi lived to play Venkman (although in that case the character probably wouldn't have ended up as the Venkman we know and love, since John would have had him tailored to his own style), and had we managed to get Candy as Louis (although I'll admit Moranis probably was better in the end for the role) and Eddie Murphy had been Winston, as all originally intended.

Oh, and a good one for this board:

Anthony Michael Hall turned down the role of Cameron Frye in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. (And so did Emilio Estevez).
