The medical community is getting pretty concerned that a pandemic is possible with the swine flu.

The last time I heard of the swine flu was way back in the 70s-80s.

Could this be the big one? Will it prove to be worse than what SARS & The Bird Flu ended up being?

I only heard of this yesterday. I can't believe it's become such big news so fast!

The state of Queensland has enacted it's pandemic protocols already, I guess they must have a few cases up there.

Scary stuff.

There are a number of confirmed cases in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Canada), which is only about a 1.5 hour drive from where I live...very scary. Many airlines and travel agencies are ceasing flights to Mexico...I certainly think they should close the border. People just don't seem to take it seriously enough....fine if they want to go and stay there until well after this is gone...risking their own lives is one thing...but then coming back and potentially exposing others is absolutely not OK

People also are not giving this enough credit and many do not seems to grasp the grave possibilities of a Pandemic...or what that would truely mean. A Pandemic mean thosands and thousands of deaths. We should not permitt the "uninformed" to gamble with our lives...

Well, I'm over here in Queens, NY. Over 20 students at a local high school have come down with swine flu and one is a former student of mine. Additionally, several of my current students have brothers and sisters who attend the high school that has been affected. Bad news, all of it!

Up to half a million people die of regular flu every year. 257 people died of bird flu in 2005. According to the New York Times, there has only been one confirmed death from the swine flu, and she had it for weeks before she went to the hospital.

People are panicking when there is no real reason to at this stage.

Besides, a quick check of WIkipedia hints that most flu pandemics if they reach that stage last a year or less, the horrific 1918-19 Spanish flu pandemic being the lone exception in recent memory. Moreover, the government announced that if all goes well, they should have a vaccine ready by autumn. I'm sure there probably will be more deaths here before it's over with--it's to be expected in any similar situation--but I don't think it will be as bad as long as people keep washing their hands regularly, and the H1N1 strain doesn't mutate into something worse.

P.S. Wikipedia isn't exactly a reliable source especially when it comes to medical related issues IMO........

it was on the news here they said the people getting sick are feeling better quickly and without medication? at this point they also said that people are getting carried away with it and that recently a woman was taken off a plane because she was coughing and sneezing turned out to be a regular cold not swine flu? i think you are right if everyone is careful and washes their hands alot they should be okay?

My brother and his wife had been confirmed to have swine flu. They are both in the hospital, have been since friday. They are fine! Just keeping them as precautionary measures. Basically, they both had flu like symptoms, high fever, vomiting, and the other not so pleasant side effects of the flu. I talked to my brother on the phone last night, he was laughing about it all. He said it wasn't any worse than having the regular flu. He was more excited he got to eat jello for dinner! And thinks he should get eternal pity from the family for having it! (I don't think so!)

They live in Michigan, Grand Rapids.

I just heard a couple schools there are closed as well. Would make sense, ,y sister in law is a teacher at one of the closed schools.

They are both fine! No worries. Both expected to leave the hospital soon. I talk to them both on the phone and they are both laughing and having a grand time in the hospital being waited on hand and foot.

How many deaths have their been from the swine flu? It sounds to me like it is only life threatening when you dont get medical attention for weeks after the first symptoms. I dont know, I am not a doctor.

Great news about them recovering. I'm hoping it will die down and the worst will be over.
