Haven't done this in a while...

Since ISIS was mentioning it in the "Werewolves In London" thread on the 70's Rewind Boards, I thought I'd bring it up.

Today's 80's Song of the Day is The Grateful Dead's "Touch Of Grey", from 1987. Their only Top-40 hit single. And a great wistful song too!

Who'd ever thought that hippie psychedelic 60's band would have their only major hit single in the 80's? It's strange, but then, the Grateful Dead's success has always defied convention.

I remember when I first heard that song on the radio, I originally thought it was by Tom Petty! [Eek!]

Anyone has memories of this song?

Here's the lyrics:
* * * * * * *
"TOUCH OF GREY"
Grateful Dead

Must be getting early
Clocks are running late
Faint light of the morning sky
Looks so phony
Dawn is breaking everywhere
Light a candle, curse the glare
Draw the curtains I don't care, cuz it's alright

I will get by
I will get by
I will get by
I will survive

I see you've got your fist out
Say your piece and get out
Yes, I get the gist of it, but it's alright
Sorry that you feel that way
The only thing there is to say
Every silver lining's got a touch of grey

I will get by
I will get by
I will get by
I will survive

It's a lesson to me
The eagles and the beggars and the seas
The ABC's we all must face
Try to keep a little grace

It's a lesson to me
The Deltas and the east and the freeze
The ABC's we all think of
And try to win a little love

I know the rent is in arrears
The dog has not been fed in years
It's even worse than it appears, but it's alright
Cows giving kerosene
Kid can't read at seventeen
The words he knows are all obscene, but it's alright

I will get by
I will get by
I will get by
I will survive

The shoe is on the hand that fits
There's really nothing much to it
Whistle through your teeth and spit, cuz it's alright
Oh well a touch of grey kinda suits you anyway
And that was all I had to say and it's alright

I will get by
I will get by
I will get by
I will survive

We will get by
We will get by
We will get by
We will survive

(repeat)

OOOH...I didn't see you wrote this...I actually like this song alot. I can totally connect it to that year and what I was going in my life then, cause it was completely over played everywhere.

I swear the video played on MTV every hour.

My Aunt was a total hippie- still is to this day, when we went to Vermont to visit she was loaded with "Cherry Garcia" ice cream from Ben & Jerry's. She loved the Grateful Dead...and she loved Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young...

I know you started this thread about that song...but here are 2 other songs by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young that to me kind of sound similiar to "Touch of Grey"..I love these 2 songs:

Got it Made
Stephen Stills & Neil Young)

Know you are a friend of mine, babe you been gone
An awful long time. You might remember me, I tried
To set your soul free.

Glad that you got it made, when did you finalize your last trade?
You are the only one I've ever seen do what you done

Anything that you done done, you are the only one
Don't put me under your gun.

I'm gonna be missing you, even though I understand that you're not through.
Go on take it day by day, seems like I lost you anyway.

Glad that you got it made, when did you finalize your last trade?
You are the only one I've ever seen do what you done
Done
Anything that you done done, you are the only one
Don't put me under your gun.

When you came to save the world I caused your
Dreams to fade,
I couldn't do what you did and rained on your parade.

Glad that you got it made.
Glad that you got it made.

Hard set of changes, for anyone that I know,
You're gonna make it, make it, make it better for you
And me and anyone else you know.

Just don't forget me, I'll be there when you're done
And in the meantime, meantime, you'll get to know
Yourself
So don't judge anyone else, anyone.

It doesn't matter I don't mind, I'm sure that you'll
Remember sometime, even if you never do,
All you need to worry `bout now is you.

Glad that you got it made, when did you finalize your
Last trade?
You are the only one I've ever seen do what you done
Done
Anything that you done done, you are the only one
Don't put me under your gun.

Glad that you got it made.

and

American Dream
I used to see you on every T.V.
Your smiling face looked back at me.
I used to see you on every T.V.
Your smiling face looked back at me.
Then they caught you with the girl next door,
People's money piled on the floor,
Accusations that you try to deny,
Revelations and rumors begin to fly.
Now you think about reaching out
Maybe get some help from above.
Now you think about reaching out
Maybe get some help from above.
Reporters crowd around your house.
Going through your garbage like a pack of hounds,
Speculating what they may find out,
It don't matter now, you're all washed up.
You wake up in the middle of the night.
Your sheets are wet and your face is white,
You tried to make a good thing last,
How could something so good, go bad, so fast?
American dream, American dream
American dream, American dream.
Don't know when things went wrong,
Might have been when you were young and strong.
Don't know when things went wrong,
Might have been when you were young and strong.
Reporters crowd around your house.
Going through your garbage like a pack of hounds,
Speculating what they may find out,
It don't matter now, you're all washed up.
Don't know when things went wrong,
Might have been when you were young and strong.
American dream, American dream.
Don't know when things went wrong,
Might have been when you were young and strong.
American dream, American dream.

American Dream is all about celebrities, and the media and it is a perfect song for on here.
