For the ultimate in 80's Alternative music today, I listen to XM Radio's First Wave. I just love this channel.. I only have XM Radio in my Maxima, but it is so awesome that it makes me want to go driving around town on a Saturday night while the Saturday Night Safety Dance in on.

The real reason of this thread is the fact they are doing a few special guest "Top 10 Classic Alternative Songs" countdowns starting at 9am EST this morning.

Up first is:

Squeeze at 9am

Curt Smith from Tears For Fears at 10am

If you missed them this morning .. they are replaying them again throughout the weekend! Check the XM picture link above for your time zone.

Anyone else have Sirius/XM Radio?

I used to have Sirius radio a few years ago but I got rid of it after I bought an iPod. My favorite channel was definitely 1st Wave! I remember an all Bruce Springsteen channel too, which was cool.

Just finished cruising around listening to Curt Smith from Tears For Fears recap what he considered the most influential classic alternative tunes for him.  It was a great listen and Curt is now a legend in my mind for his #1 tune listed below..

10. Sex & Drugs & Rock 'n Roll - Ian Dury
9. Everyday I Write the Book - Elvis Costello
8. Visions of China - Japan
7. God Save the Queen - The Sex Pistols
6. Once In a Lifetime - The Talking Heads
5. Fashion - David Bowie
4. Games Without Frontiers - Peter Gabriel
3. That's Entertainment - The Jam
2. Senses Working Overtime - XTC
1. Valley Girl - Frank & Moon Zappa

I totally realize Curt Smith's choice of Valley Girl was just a way to have fun with the countdown and poke fun at his wife and two daughters who he stated had turned into Valley Girls after living in LA for awhile.. but still awesome!

So how about this connection.. Curt Smith chooses "Valley Girl" as his #1 tune.. "Valley Girl" starred Deborah Foreman.. Foreman can also be seen in "Real Genius" which brilliantly features the Tears For Fears tune.. Everybody Want to Rule the World.

Interesting that he mentions 'Japan'. They were very very credible at a certain point in the early 80's (just before they decided to break up - boneheads). They never made a dent in the US. 'Gentlemen Take Polaroids' is one of the great unsung New Wave albums (not that they would have been called New Wave at the time).

Shameless self-promotion is what it is! It's as clear as mud!
