"Threads" was written by Yorkshireman Barry Hines, renowned for works such as 'A Kestrel for a Knave', which was adapted into the Ken Loach film "Kes". Hines has since tragically been afflicted with Alzheimer's disease.

Sheffield was chosen as the setting because of the likelihood that it would be attacked due to its proximity to an NATO base.
Rita May previously co-starred with cast member Phil Askham in two other films, "Looks and Smiles" as well as "The Gamekeeper," both of which were from novels written by Barry Hines.

Director Mick Jackson went on to direct the comparable "A Very British Coup" on British television before relocating to Hollywood and directing feature films, including The Bodyguard starring Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston!
