Bill Murray's own real-life brothers - John Murray, Joel Murray and Brian Doyle-Murray - make appearances in this film - in particular, John and Brian as his on-screen brothers.
The Ghost of Christmas Past, David Johansen, may be more better known to some as Buster Poindexter, who sung the famous song 'Hot, Hot, Hot" as Buster Poindexter and His Banshees of Blue. Buster was also a regular during 1986 and 1987 on Saturday Night Live.
When The Ghost of Christmas Present, Carol Kane, first makes herself known, she says to Frank Cross "I'm a little muddled.". This is a quote from the Good Witch in The Wizard of Oz when she first meets Dorothy.

In one of the early scenes, with Frank Cross (Bill Murray) and his (real-life) brother, when his brother is inviting him for Christmas dinner and Frank turns the invitation down, check the musicians on the corner whom Frank doesn't give any money to (playing a jazzy version of "We Three Kings of Orient")! One of them is the immortal Miles Davis, and another is the one and only Paul Schaefer from the CBS Orchestra/David Letterman Show!
The Director, Richard Donner, has a cameo in the film as a worker in the control room during the end scenes at the end of the film.
During the Trivia game played by Frank's family, the question "What's the name of the boat on 'Gilligan's Island'?" is asked. Richard Donner was one of the original directors on that show.
During the "Frisbee" Show scene (when Frank is dressed in the dog suit), there is a tree at the back of the set with a heart engraving on it and which you can see briefly. It reads "Dick heart Lauren"; Richard Donner is married to producer Lauren Shuler Donner.

The actress who plays Grace's (Alfre Woodard) oldest daughter is a very young Regina King. She was also Marcie, Rod Tidwell's wife, in "Jerry Maguire".
The majority of the characters are based on characters in A Christmas Carol: Frank Cross is Ebenezer Scrooge; Grace is Bob Cratchit; Grace's son is Tiny Tim; Lew Hayward is Jacob Marley; and Claire is Scrooge's former fiancée, Belle.
This film features the final mass media appearance of the Solid Gold Dancers, as their show had already been cancelled in the states for a few months when the film premiered.

Karen Allen (Claire Phillips) also starred in the 80's film "Starman" alongside Jeff Bridges. She is also married to Kale Browne better known to his fans as Michael Hudson on the now defunct soap "Another World".
