For the film, Stone felt he needed something extraordinary, he wanted John Williams, a master exponent of the theme soundtrack. The money eventually became available for Stone to get his man and the score is most effective when complimenting the more romantic images, or when Ronnie arrives home from the war, his mother runs down the ramp to greet him, neighbors appear from their houses to see him with the Long Island sky a backdrop framed by trees.
