Filming was done in Mexico because of reports of kidnappings in Colombia.

As stated in her book, Kathleen Turner confessed to having a relationship with Michael Douglas at the time of filming. Michael was seperated from his then wife Diandra (who he eventually divorced before marrying Catherine Zeta Jones) and the two became involved. Michael and Diandra got back together, ending Michael and Kathleen's romance. Kathleen stated that she feels the situation helped her performance.

The waterfalls scene (as they swim to the secret location) was shot at "Diamond Falls", Soufriere, St. Lucia.
