Rick Zumwalt was a real-life arm wrestling champion.
The script was written by Stirling Siliphant whom also collaborated with Bruce Lee on "The Silent Flute". Mr. Siliphant orinally wrote "Over the Top" for Don Johnson as his first big screen attempt while "Miami Vice" was so popular.
The commandant in the military school scene was Col James Shaha (USA Ret.) He was the actual commandant of the Southern California Military Academy. The actual academy cadets and parents were used as fill-in's during filming at Pomona College. The Southern California Military Academy was closed shortly thereafter.
