Burt Reynolds was originally slated to direct the movie, but left after a falling out with producer Joel Silver, reputedly over Silver believing the rumour that Reynolds had AIDS (Reynolds was suffering from a rare disease called TMJ at the time, which caused him to drop below 140 pounds.
