Director David Cronenberg had to reshoot the scene in which John Smith has his first premonition. It showed a little girl's room burning with a small "E.T." doll on one of the shelves. The scene had to be re-done when Universal Pictures objected.

When Martin Sheen was approached for the role of the shady Stillson, he was a bit reluctant. For he had recently wrapped his work in "Gandhi" (1982) and felt that playing a role as Stillson wouldn't be right.
