Mark Hamill stunningly played Mozart in the Broadway version of Amadeus and was eager to reprise the role for the movie. But the producers were sadly blinkered to his talents and decided against casting Luke Skywalker as the famed composer.
We believe that Meg Tilly
("The Big Chill
") was originally cast as Mozart's wife Constanze. However, while on location, playing soccer with the crew, she pulled a ligament. Understudy Elizabeth Berridge then got the part.
The entire film was shot with natural light in order to get the proper diffusion of light for some scenes, the DP's covered windows from the outside with tracing paper.
Costumes for the operatic productions were based on sketches of the original costumes and sets used when the operas premiered.
