John
Hughes
ou
may not be as familiar with the name as you are with his films,
but John Hughes is most famous for his early teen movies (Sixteen
Candles, The Breakfast Club,
Pretty in Pink, Weird Science, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Some
Kind of Wonderful)
His
movies, often using 'brat pack' actors such as Molly Ringwald
and Anthony Michael Hall attracted massive cult followings
which live on well after many movies are long forgotten.

The
late John Candy appeared in seven John Hughes films. Several
roles were written for him specifically, including scripts
that were never used due to Candy's death.
 |
Young
people everywhere have related intensely to Hughes' characters
as they suffer their waysthrough high school with plenty of
sweet romance and humor.
Later his films touched on matters for an older audience with
his families in Mr. Mom, Uncle Buck, Dutch and She's Having
a Baby. Most recently his interests have leaned toward the
youngest film audiences, with Home Alone, and rewrites of
101 Dalmations and Flubber. (Good news, though, for Generation
X -- Hughes is beginning to work his way back toward his teen
audience.)

A
lot of his movies, especially the teen stories, were first written
in a long prose form, where the characters knew each other and attended
the same school (Shermer High).
He also wrote many short stories, magazine articles, unpublished novels,
and jokes for stand-up comedians before becoming an editor for National
Lampoon magazine in 1979. It was here where he broke into professional
screenwriting with National Lampoon's Class Reunion (1982) and in
1993, National Lampoon's Vacation, which was based on a short story
he wrote called "Vacation '58."
At least nine movies feature novelty license plates of some kind,
usually spelling an acronym of a Hughes film or title or character.
Hughes grew up in a lower-upper class neighborhood of Chicago, where
he grew familiar with both the modest and wealthier lifestyles. The
clashes of the classes would appear throughout several of his films,
including The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Dutch, and Curly Sue.
