The Karate Kid Goofs

Getting Miyagi'd. The lesson is not always obvious ;-)

"Er, someone wasn't on top of their game that day..."
See the goofs, blunders and plain ole mistakes in the 1984 Martial Arts movie starring Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita, Elisabeth Shue More Cast

We believe the following are all legit mistakes. If we've bungled it, or you have additional info, please update us.

In the scene where Daniel is being chased from the dance by Johnny and the gang and he runs through the open field behind his apartment complex. If you look closely at one of the trees in the middle of the field, you can see a smoke machine pumping out smoke to make the scene look foggy. Not very well hidden!
Thanks to Edward Fong
In the scene where Johnny Lawrence rams Ali's radio at Daniel LaRusso, the speakers are initially facing Daniel; when Daniel, shown at a different angle, takes the radio's brunt in the belly and falls over, the speakers of the radio are facing Johnny! Oops!

When Mr. Miyagi saves Daniel from Johnny and his gang by the fence, he picks up Daniel and puts him over his shoulder but on the very next shot he opens the fence and Daniel is on the other shoulder. In the same scene, Mr. Miyagi never punches Johnny in the face but the next day at the dojo he has a black eye.

A boom mic is clearly seen behind the car when Daniel goes to Miyagi's door before going to the Cobra Kai dojo.

When Daniel gets beaten up after the dance he has a bruise on his face and a band-aid. He then goes on his date with Ali and the damage on his face disappears. The next day, when he enters Miyagi's back yard for his first day of training, the bruise and band-aid are back on his face.

There is a scene where Mr Miyagi is trying to catch a fly with chop sticks, if you look very carefully, you can see the fine glimmering effect of the wire that is suspending the fake fly.

In the scene where Ali is dancing with her father at the fancy restaurant, we see Johnny sit down at the table next to Ali's mother. During the same shot Ali asks, "Hey Dad, what time is it?" The shot switches to an opposite angle, and the father replies, "Well, it's about...9:40" just as Johnny and the mother dance into the shot from the right side of the frame. There is no way they could have arrived there that fast from where they were sitting.

In the opening sceces where Daniel is unloading the car at the new apartment you can see the top of Freddy's head behind the swinging door long before he would have been there.

No doubt that the actor was already in position for Daniel kicking the door moments later and hitting him...

In the scene where Mr. Miyagi accompanies Daniel at the Cobra Kai dojo and requests that Kreese's students leave Daniel alone, you can see one of the extras (one of the students) burst out laughing. This happens as Mr. Miyagi and Daniel begin to leave the dojo.

On the reverse shot where we see Kreese and his students watching them leave, the extra is the student standing in the far left back corner. He has a straight face and then busts out laughing. You can also see the black student start to smirk. I wonder what was so funny - or was it an intentional dig at Miyagi / Daniel?

During the last fight sequence, Daniel is clearly showing Johnny when to kick his leg, by tapping his own left leg with his right hand.
Thanks to Michael Donovan
In the scene where Miyagi is showing Daniel that all the things he has been doing (paint the fence, wax on, wax off etc) were really karate training.

When he shows him "paint the fence, lock wrist, look eye ALWAYS look eye!" he is holding Daniel's right wrist, wide view and he is holding Daniels OTHER hand.

When Daniel catches the fly with the chopsticks, he catches it in the middle of the sticks but in the next (long) shot, the fly can be seen at the very end between the tips...

The station wagon showed in the opening scenes in Newark is clearly a different car from the one we see later in the movie.

For a start, it has a huge dent on the right hand side of the tailgate, which is missing on the car later in the movie.

Bogus Blunders

Sometimes an apparent goof is not a real mistake

But, nothing bogus that we know yet for "The Karate Kid".
