Anyone remember a little movie called "Oridinary Magic"? This movie was widely mistaken for being a Disney movie in the area where I lived after it's short run on the cable channels. Now this movie is pretty hard to find.

Anywayz...

The movie is about an eccentric teenage kid named Jeffery(Ryan Reynolds) from India who's parents died. So he's forced to go live with the only living relative he has left, his Aunt Charlotte(Glenne Headly) in Ontario Canada. As Jeffery tries to adjust to this brand new way of life, he's faced with ridicule and disdain from his peers in his new school, and most of the towns people in the small Canadian community. They are just not used to the way he does things or his passive views on life. His religious practices in Yoga that was taught to him by his parents at a very young age cause a stir in the community, and especially in his school where he practices the disiplinary arts openly and freely regardless of what his peers and school staff thinks. Soon however, a couple of his classmates open up their minds to this strange new kid and befriend him. They are fascinated and eager to hear, and even learn of the art of Yoga from him.

The conflict of the movie arises when Jeffery learns that his aunt's house is in danger of being torn down to make way for a new ski resort. He then convinces his Aunt Charlotte and his new friends from school to join him in staging a hunger strike in his aunt's house to save it from being demolished. Do they succeed?...I guess I shouldn't say....for those who've not seen this film, you'll just have to watch it and find out.

I decided to make a thread on this film, not because it's an excellent family film. But because it's one of those 90's gems that has a real 80's feel to it. And it's really not a bad movie at all. I compare it to other classic family drama films like, "The Boy who could Fly" and "Powder", though not quite on the same level of excellence as those films. The movie is slow moving and predictable in some places, and even though the overall content is not up to par when compared to other movies like it, I say it's still worth at least one viewing if you've never seen it.

I give it a rating of 7/10

You're welcome Secret. You should definitely check it out. This film still has that certain subtle charm to it that stands the test of time...so I guess you'll either love it or hate it. I still like it personally.
