This is one of my favourite Johnny Depp performances, four years after hit gothic fantasy ‘Edward Scissorhands’, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp re-teamed to film a biopic of sorts, focusing on the life and career of much maligned, 1950s B-movie director; Ed Wood.

Although we accept the fact that Ed Wood’s movies were more than always bad verging on the unwatchable, at the heart of this story we have the commonality of the artistic experience, and if that sounds pretentious; its because it probably is; what Burton’s saying that every artist in any field goes through very similar events in their life (epitomised by the scene where Ed Wood meets Orson Welles). ‘Ed Wood’ is more a celebration of wide-eyed enthusiasm and creativity thwarted by low budgets and one man’s unhealthy obsession with Angora sweaters.

"This story's gonna grab people. It's about this guy, he's crazy about this girl, but he likes to wear dresses. Should he tell her? Should he not tell her? He's torn, Georgie. This is drama!"

I wonder what kind of a filmmaker Ed Wood could've been if he'd had the money to go all out? I'd say he'd be like a cross between Roland Emmerich and David Lynch.

Great movie, some of the usual wonderful character acting by Mr. Depp. Let's not forget Martin Landau's wonderful performance as well, great stuff.
