Guys, this is an absolute classic of a show. It's simply one of the funniest things you'll ever see.

It stars Dawn French (from French and Saunders) as Geraldine Grainger, a vicar who is posted to a quaint English village and immediately causes controversy by the fact that she is a female. As she says when she first arrives - "You were expecting a bloke, bald, bad breath, and instead you got a babe with a bob cut and a bodacious bosom!"

Even though Dawn French is the star of the show, it is truly an ensemble effort. From David, the local councillor who has comfortably run Dibley for years, to Hugo his slightly dim witted but sweet son.

Then there is Frank, the most boring man in England whose parents killed themselves to get away from him,

Jim Trott who is a bit of a dirty old man whose every sentence is prefaced with a "No, no, no, no, no, no"

Owen Newitt - a farmer with a foul mouth who has no problem with sharing stories of his cows latest bowel problems with anyone in ear shot.

Letitia Cropley - the worst cook in the world. She collected snails to use in her Bread and Butter Pudding Suprise, and made Liver Pancakes.

Last but not least is dear old Alice, the verger. The most sweethearted creature on earth, but also one of the stupidest. The actress who played Alice hasn't a lot of credits to her name, but she all but steals every scene she appears in.

The best thing about The Vicar of Dibley is the dialogue, it has some of the most brilliant quotes you'd ever hear.

Eg,

Alice:" You know I can't believe it's not butter, and the stuff that's like I can't believe it's not butter... well I believe that I can't believe it's not butter and the stuff I can't believe isn't I can't believe it's not butter, are in fact both butter, but in a very clever disguise."

" This is the worst idea since Mrs Hitler said to Mr Hitler 'Let's take this upstairs Bruno, I'm feeling randy'"

Alice began giving birth as she was playing Virgin Mary in the nativity scene. Someone finally noticed, and said "Jesus, you're having the baby", but was corrected - "No, the line is 'You're having the baby Jesus!"

The Vicar, when asked about missionary work - "Well, you know how fond I am of all things missionary"

The best one was Alice's reaction to the joke about Superman and the Invisible Man!

"I might have met the invisible man, but I wouldn't know, and I'm pretty sure I've never met Superman"

I love this show to the point that I have all episodes on DVD and I regularly watch them when I need cheering up.

My personal fave scene ever is when Alice is talking about "I can't believe its not butter" and lets not forget the classic plea to recognise the plight of those suffering Tinselitis from eating too many christmas tree decorations.

Noms [Cool]
