I would have to say The Joy Luck Club was one of the best movies of the 90's. It is a very touching and emotional movie about the lives of 4 asian mothers.

I agree Blondie135, that is one of my favorite films. Have you ever read the book?

I'll have to think about "best" movies of the 90s, but some memorable ones for me are The Lover, Swingers, and Jackie Brown.

As for concerts, Pearl Jam in '94 was the best concert bar none.

Any Kevin Smith movie is a best. He is a genius with his wit and comic timing. Most people only know his Jay and Silent Bob movies but he has a few lost ones out there. Suggest seein those as well as his J&SB movies especially DOgma.

Probly no where near anyones list, but mine is 1997s Breakdown, an awesome Kurt Russell thriller.

Best comedy of the 90s (which no film has yet to top) was City Slickers.

Normally I would make a long list...but I haven't gotten a chance to really think about it...but there is one movie in particular that I love!...REMEMBER THE TITANS...This is the type of movie that you can watch over and over! I was upset that this film didn't win any awards because it was great!! The music was great too...and the fact that it's based on a true story makes it even better! [Smile]

Two of the films I love from the 90s would have to be Dazed And Confused and Inventing The Abbotts. I love both of those movies, they're very endearing.

best concert? hmmm. saw quite a few, some memorable ones that spring to mind are Tina Turner, Neil Diamond, Mike & The Mechanics, Big Country (twice), Jimmy Barnes (twice), Jeff Healey Band, Crash Test Dummies, Def Leppard, Bryan Adams, Green Day, ummmm...

I always thought the movie, "Strange Days" was pretty cool. It was pretty underrated when it came out.

You know I always thought that the Sharpe series were great movies of the 90s. Pretty much no one in the U.S. has seen them which is a shame. I'm a huge Sean Bean fan so that's how I got into Sharpe. They played the series here once on Masterpiece Theatre which airs on public television but who watches that? The ratings weren't that great I guess, so they haven't shown them since. I think they are really worth watching, but that's just my opinion. [Smile]

Best 90's movies, for me anyway:

Ed Wood -a top three favorite of all time. the greatest Tim Burton movie ever (and I'm a big fan of his stuff)

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

there are others, like...

Bottle Rocket -Wes Anderson's first movie, pre-Rushmore and The Royal Tennenbaums.

But yeah, Ed Wood is the best.

Hello everyone, I'm new to the group. I really have enjoyed reading some of the post. In this particular discussion I have heard some great 90's movies favorable mention. I would have to say that the best movie from this time period to me would be "The Last Of The Mohicans" James Fenimore Cooper's novel is really brought to life by Director Michael Mann. Mann's talent for pulling you into a film is helped immensely by his lead actors. Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe. And what can be said about the Soundtrack to give it justice. This is another extraordinary album, combining heart-throbbing tracks from Trevor Jones and more laid back themes from Randy Edelman. In fact, though it's not the best movie of all time, I'd say that the soundtrack is the best thing I've ever heard. Download track 1.Main Title, 2.Elk Hunt, 3.The Kiss and see for yourself. Well, that's my sick opinion. Sorry, still learnin how to be short and sweet.

This one is hard because I'm "diving" so much in the eighties that I don't think I can remember a movie from the 90's that I really liked... but hmm...

First I don't know the year it was made, either 90's or 00's but it has to be one of my all time favourite movies - The Virgin Suicides - because its supposed to be in the 70's and I think its perfectly recreated plus the soundtrack is just amazing.

Then other movies...
hm.. "Seven" was good and so as "Cruel Intentions" and this horror gore flick -> Braindead AKA Dead Alive wass cool too =)

Just scanned this post, and don't believe that it's gone so far without anyone mentioning Pump Up The Volume cos that's top of anyone's list.

Others for me would be LA Confidential with Kevin Spacey, Kim Basinger, and the excellent and underrated Guy Pearce, Groundhog Day with Bill Murray and the delicious Andie McDowell, and alittle teem comedy called Eight Days A Week, which I have just reviewed at another site - The Spinning Image [Big Grin]

I guess I have to go with Groundhog Day also, since I did grow up in the town it was based on, me and Punxsy Phil are as tight as can be!

My parents best friends live in the town it was filmed in!!! [Big Grin] Woodstock, Illinois!!!! They used to owm a beautiful house that would have made a great B&B!!! [Wink] Go Groundhog Day!!!

Posted by isis9968 (Member # 1780) on :

TresFoxy-they did recreate Punxsutawney really well, the 2 towns are very similar, so that was actually cool. My grandpa lived on Cherry Street- where they put the Bed N Breakfast that Bill Murray stayed in. My friend from high school helped give factual information for the film, and his brother was an extra in the movie. Punxsutawney is all about the Ground Hog, in high school we were the Woodchucks, and are rivals were The Beavers. We had a Groundhog King and Queen. Every year for Groundhog Day, they get around 30,000 people there, it's crazy. I went to Gobblers Knob in high school with my foreign exchange student, and it is no fun to get out there in the freezing cold at around 5am, to watch them pull poor Phil out of his fake tree stump. Oh, well it is cool to come from a town that everyone knows about though.

Posted by TresFoxy (Member # 542) on :

That's true it is nice to be nationally know for such a nice thing. Who doesn't love cuddly groundhogs. Just think of "Caddyshack" My town is know for nothing. We are often called Deadford instead of Redford because nothing ever goes on here. Well actually my town has made two claims to fame but both of them were very negative! I really liked staying in Woodstock though and if the real town of Puxatawny(sp?) is as nice as Woodstock then I'm sure I would love to visit there! As for my High School I went to R.U. High!!!! [Big Grin] Most people find that absolutely hilarious but it's really my school's name we were the panthers though....

Most of the ones I'd choose have already been listed....also loved The Chase (1994) with Charlie Sheen....A Walk In The Clouds (1995) with Keanu Reeves - I had never even heard of this one till my Mom and I found it on cable one rainy day and had nothing better to watch. hehe Now it's one of my favorites. It does seem like the further we get from the 80's the crummier the movies get for the most part. There are some gems here and there, though. [Big Grin]

I'm not much of a block-buster action-flick mainstream movie-goer, so two of my favorite '90s movies are "The Piano" and "Sense & Sensibility." If a movie doesn't play at the local alternative cinema, it's not something I'm likely to see. I don't have a lot of time for movie-going due to being a single working mom, so it better be worth my money. Better popcorn than a mall theater, plus home-made cakes & biscotti...what's not to like?

Posted by Ali_with_an_i (Member # 27) on :

oh those are two great films! I love Sense and Sensability. My olser sister's favorite movie is The Piano.

See I forgot about those films. There are tons that were made in the 90s but my brain is clogged and I haven't been able to think of anything.

I'll probably remember all the films I liked in the 90s ten years from now.

"Office Space" is great.

One time, one of the idiots in my office sent an All Staff e-mail because someone had confiscated HER STAPLER...she knew it was HER STAPLER by some identifying characteristic...would the culprit please return HER STAPLER immediately to its rightful owner without fear of retribution.

So this guy send another e-mail alluding to Milton and his missing stapler...I almost LMAO at the time...but I think only he & I "got" the subversive message. Oh, the humanity that is life and thank god for movies to help us get through it!

River,
I didn't like any of those movies, on your list,-we really have completely different tastes in movies except Virgin Suicides, which was completely depressing. The best thing about it was the soundtrack. Man, did Kathleen Turner look old. I loved her in The War of the Roses-I loved that house.

I hated The Piano, I gave that one away-I don't know why I bought it, and I bought Forrest Gump without ever seeing it, and that movie stinks, I hate Tom Hanks's voice in it, and it was so depressing, and when his mom-Sally Field-took the teacher in to mess around with him, to get her kid in to school while he stood there listening-that was gross, and I didn't find her to be a great role model mother. Life is like a box of chocolates...the end should have been: it all starts to look like crap.

I didn't really like any of the Tom Hanks movies that won him the oscars...I liked him in comedies like:
Big
Turner and Hooch
Splash
Bachelor Party
The Money Pit
Castaway, and Philadelphia, and the Green Mile, were too depresiing, and I didn't even like the stories at all. Especially Castaway, Helen Hunt shouldn't have replaced him in her life so easily.. a few years is not a long time to mourn a person.

My favorite 90's movies..and one of my all time favorites that I never get tired of is Frequency-that is a great movie-that movie is about hope, and it is sad, but with a great ending, and it is thrilling. It has everything in it, it is so well done, even though it is not ever possible-that is what is cool about it, the idea of what if it could be??

Posted by Ali_with_an_i (Member # 27) on :

I liked Sleepers. It depressed me because it was supposedly based on a true story. I thought the acting was good and very believable. It's just not a film I can watch more than once.

I'm not really a Brad Pitt fan but he's in some decent films. I also liked Seven. I hate Thelma and Louise. I just never got that one.

A '90s movie I really love is "One False Move" which was written by Billy Bob Thornton...he also played one of the bad guys. I think this is the first time I recognized Bill Paxton outside of "Weird Science" and I was rather impressed.

The casting person for this movie went to grade school with my brother, so I guess I have "hometown pride" for it...but I like the story on many levels.

This was Billy Bob's breakthru after starving in Hollywood for a few years. I think he actually made enuf money on it to help finance "Slingblade" a few years later. That's a good one too...who knew John Ritter could do so well?

There are tons of movies in the 90's that were good, but the two that stick out are The Usual Suspects and Seven.

Excellent writing and perfectly cast films.

Shawshank Redemption was great, too.

And Happy Gilmore...cuz it makes me laaaaaauugh!

I must've posted a top 5 already, but never mind. 'Forrest Gump' was unbearably annoying especially when you look at the talent involved (just goes to prove that they should leave the serious stuff to guys like Oliver Stone) only Gary Sinise made it watchable.

I'm surprised all the 80's people keep overlooking Kevin Smith, he was John Hughes on weed in the 90's: Clerks, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob strike back; all classics, even Mallrats is somewhat of a cult fav these days.

HF TOP 5 OVERLOOKED FILMS OF THE 90S

1)living in oblivion
2)swimming with sharks
3)glengerry/glenross
4)gremlins 2: the new batch
5)three kings

These are all good choices however I'm surprised only one person I saw mentioned Schindler's List. This is considered the best of the '90s by the critics but may be too serious for many, and doesn't really fit the 'zeitgeist' of the decade. But then again neither did the Breakfast Club...

Welcome newbies.

As a card-carrying member of the alternative society for the prevention of cinema schlock, my list includes those movies that don't generally run at mall chain theaters. In short, if it was directed by Cameron, produced by Bruckheimr, starred Cruise, Ford or DiCaprio, I probably didn't see it.

I have my weak moments...for instance, I enjoyed "True Lies"...but for the most part, I'm an admitted cinema snob.
