i love this movie. probably my favorite, brooks film. Maybe even my favorite movie about frankenstein and the creature. not to mention the comedy was great, wilder and brooks together. how come they didnt team up anymore than what they did?

Clash of ego's. Not many people realise, but Young Frankenstein was Wilder's baby, Brooks kind of 'helped' and then took over. It's no coincidence that Wilder's next project was written / directed by him; 'Sherlock Holmes Smarter Brother'.

really, i didnt know that about wilder. i heard he and richard pryor didnt get along all too well either

Yeah, I'm not sure if I recall correctly, but I think Wilder had maybe 80% of the script, touted it to the studios who liked it but weren't hot on him directing. He let Brooks read it and make suggestions to help him finish it, and Brooks kind of put himself forward as a possible director - which the studio was happy with (post 'Blazing Saddles'). So Wilder always seems - while fiercely proud of the film - just a touch resentful. I actually really like Wilder's two self-written parodies of the 70's: 'Sherlock Holmes Smarter Brother' and 'The Worlds Greatest Lover'. Unfortunately, they aren't the best directed movies and they look weak next to 'Blazing Saddles' and 'Young Frankenstein'.

I think he and Pryor simply had little to do with each other. They would go to work, do their scenes, and then leave to totally separate lives. So they neither disliked nor liked each other on any scale. Their chemistry for 'Silver Streak' was something of an unexpected fluke which got repeated in 'Stir Crazy'. 'Trading Places' was supposed to be a vehicle for them, but Pryor wouldn't do it (I think) so they had to get Eddie Murphy, who was wary of being a stooge to Wilder, so Aykroyd got the part.

My favorite Mel Brooks movie. Not the funniest--that goes to Blazing Saddles--but the best thought out and put together spoof. One of Gene Wilder's best performances too!

My favorite Mel Brooks movie, and yes, it was mostly Gene Wilder's idea for the film.
It's now a Broadway musical. Has anyone seen the stage version yet?

Watched Young Frankenstein (1974) and it´s still a very good movie.
Not every gag/line works but most of them do and this is so well made and looks glorious in black and white. Wilder is awesome, Madeline Kahn is funny, Peter Boyle rocks as the creature and Gene Hackman surprises with his comedy skills as the blind man. And what about Teri Garr! I could watch her all day and night
