What's the comedy from the eighties that everyone else says is great but you just don't find that funny? Spaceballs for me. -

I have to concede, that's a good choice for me too. While Spaceballs certainly is not terrible, for a Mel Brooks comedy, it's hardly close to his best work. I know, however, that a lot of people really like it so we're in the minority.

If The Goonies counts as a "comedy," then count it as way overrated for me. It's pleasant enough but not an enduring classic.

Ferris beullers Day off. Maybe not the most overrated but it was the first to come to mind.

Police Academy

It's probably not considered a good movie, but its popularity did spawn numerous sequels,
a TV series, and a cartoon.. I mean, come on ! [Confused]

In my opinion it didn't deserve to become as popular as it did.

Spaceballs is a very good choice although i´m willing to give it one more chance.
Another one i would mention is A Fish Called Wanda. Just not funny.

I'd forgotten about Police Academy. I don't find it funny at all, and the sequels are even worse. Whereas I do find A Fish Called Wanda to be very funny. John Cleese is a genius. Same for Ferris Beuller's Day off. I think it's very funny, John Hughes's second best film after Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.

Christmas Vacation. I thought the first two were so much better. I think people must be able to relate to the situations of holiday stress or something, and that's why they like it so much. I don't know.

Surprised you chose Ferris TerdNthePoolGGB. That one's a classic to a lot of people. Police Academy 's a good selection. First one was passable but the sequels got progressively worse. How about Big? It was cute but seriously -- two Oscar nominations? -

Ferris Bueller is the most detestable little s*** character ever. Nothing funny whatsoever.

I agree about Big. Cute, but just ok when looking back at it now.

Any heartwarming family comedy that gets away with making a pre-pubescent kid losing his virginity to an adult woman seem like a positive message has got something nicely subversive going for it.

Remember kids; if you're trapped in the body of an adult, it's all ok. And if an adult tells you they're really a kid trapped in an adult body...

Of the ones that are listed here I would have to agree with Spaceballs. I would definitely disagree with Christmas Vacation. The more you watch it the more you love it.

When watching Spaceballs now it seems incredibly boring but no way is the most overrate comedy of the 80's - there are too many to list that beats Spaceballs for overratedness. Goonies is a classic - if you were a kid in the 80's and you saw that movie, chances are it stayed with you. I guess if you saw it when you were an adult for the first time it might not seem so good. I watched it the other night and it hooks you in. I kept saying I'm only gonna watch it for another five minutes after saying that to myself repeatedly it was the end of the movie before long.

I think thought that the best scenes of Spaceballs are the Rick Moranis/Dark Helmet scenes. I say bring back Moranis - I think he retired.

When I first saw this thread, I immediately thought Caddyshack. I think mayv=be I have seen it too many times, and have heard too many people reference it.

Hey! Caddyshack is one of the best!

I love caddyshack and Christmas vacation,in fact most of the films mentioned here I don't dislike, big was OK but I am probably one of the few who preferred vice versa and 18 again.

I know we are all in the trust tree in this thread, judgement free zone, but COME ON!!! Big, Caddyshack, Christmas Vacation???!!! Get out of town!! Ha. Just joking.

I think Spaceballs is a good call. I also am not a fan of Ferris Bueller's, so those might be my two.

Most of Police Academy movies I never found that funny at all. Only thing that ever made them tolerable at all to me was when Bobcat Goldwaith was on it.

Reading a post on another thread reminded me of
The Three Amigos.

Devolution here,

Adventures in Babysitting. A good movie, but not as funny as I thought it should be.
