Hey Dxtra27.. welcome back! Unfortunately, none of the movies on your list are currently slated for an upcoming Blu-ray release.

Keep the dream alive though.. maybe as 30 year anniversaries start approaching the dream will become a reality.

Devolution here,

The problem is that many of them will have to change to blu-ray, but it's going to take a long time, the only thing that really is enhanced is the sound, I have Die Hard on Blu-ray and it's a great movie, but you can't improve the way it looks that much.

Got an old vhs of this 1982 action flick - the challenge directed by john frankenheimer and starring scott glenn it's a pretty entertaining watch.

It has just been announced for a blu Ray release latter in the year, when the price is right I'll probably upgrade as it's not a bad little movie at all and Scott Glenn is terrific as usual.

A few good 80s titles here in amongst yesterday's scream factory 10 blu Ray title announcement.

Ghost story is pretty good fun as is troll, nightmares was a bit of a mixed bag but I wouldn't mind checking it out again, never seen the garbage pail kids.

Return of the living dead is a classic, also like the guardian from 1990 and the car from 1977.

Not seen - women's prison massacre, blood and lace or death becomes her.

The Land Before Time coming to Blu-Ray? Wow, that's pretty cool. I used to love that film as a kid.

I really want to see Troll (1986) and River's Edge (1986).

Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :

I like The Land Before Time too. I saw it at a now long-closed drive-in. I can't remember what the co-feature was. I think it was some Godzilla film. [Smile]

Troll is fun, with Michael Moriarty giving a particularly energetic performances. And River's Edge is a small gem. It's very well written, acted, and directed.

Posted by aTomiK (Member # 6575) on :

I finally watched River´s Edge while the site was down. It was good but not a classic IMO, maybe i should´ve seen it when i was younger.
The cast is huge and Crispin is fantastic once again but if i had to choose one Tim Hunter film, i´d choose Tex.

Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :

I second what crash says about both river's edge and troll chloe, just stay well away from the god awful troll 2 which might be hard as they always seem to include it as a double feature with the original.

From the titles above the one I'm surprised I never got round to watching is death becomes her, might have to finally check that one out at some point!

Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :

Never seen tex atomik, but it does look like something I'd like, you can't go far wrong with matt dillon, Emilio estevez and Jennifer Tilly in the cast.

Prisoners Of The Lost Universe (1983) starring Kay Lenz gets the combopack treatment by UK company Odeon.

Trailer : www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QWN8bg3xLk

I have to admit i had never even heard of this one before, so i went to Youtube and came across that trailer.

Is it just me, or does that fight-scene at 0.50 look suspiciously similar to the one between Michael Douglas
and the Nubian wrestler in The Jewel Of The Nile two years later ??

i havent seen it since it was released at theatres. So its held up well Warrior?

Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :

Woods steals the whole show--in fact, he is the whole show--in one of his best, most manic performances in Cop. Director James B. Harris, didn't direct many films, but what he did was always interesting: The Bedford Incident, Some Call it Loving (which I believe is also new to Bluray), Fast-Walking, Cop, and Boiling Point. The film was based on a James Ellroy series of books about cop Lloyd Hopkins. It's a shame that they didn't make any more.

Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :

That's one I'd like to watch crash which you mention - fast walking with James woods and Kay lenz and also 1979s - the onion field is another woods movie I would like to check out!

Ooh, i have that one ! [Big Grin]

It was the first release on Vinegar Syndrome's brand new sub-label Etiquette Pictures.
The American Dreamer (1971) will be their next release, coming in september. Good stuff !

Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :

JRiR, I'm glad someone else is familiar with the really obscure Some Call it Loving. I saw it many years ago--sometime around 1981--and have always remembered it for its unique plot and ambience. I can't say that it's a complete success, but it sure is an interesting film--and it has a young Richard Pryor too.

YW, Woods gave some sensational performances between 1979 and 1989, starting with The Onion Field, which is one of his best. In fact, just about everything he did during the 80s was memorable: Split Image, Videodrome, Cop, Salvador, Once Upon a Time in America, Against All Odds, The Boost, Best Seller, True Believer...just an amazing body of work. Even when the film itself didn't quite work--Against All Odds--Woods was always fantastic.

I haven't seen it yet. But anything the fine folks at Vinegar Syndrome come up with is worth my money ! [Cool]

Kino Lorber is going to release Up the Creek (1984) later this year. It´s definitely time to revisit this one!

And i agree that all the James Woods films mentioned are excellent stuff! Still don´t have Fast Walking though.

One of the big things about these Blu Ray releases is that many of them also come with concurrent DVD releases for those who haven't got Blu Ray players.

Some of them have nice new special features included, but it's a royal pain trying to find out what ones have what. Olive Films for instance - don't bother listing special features on many of their films, even when they have them - why?!

Deadly Prey - the greatest action movie of all time - is getting a release this year.

Books are cheap, and original artwork is used for blu-ray covers : Life is good in Finland ! [Big Grin]

But seriously.. here in Holland, prices are still rising, our biggest independent film distributor
(whose focus lies mainly on releasing art-house movies theatrically) filed for bankruptcy last week,
and even the big studios hardly release any catalogue-titles on dvd or blu-ray anymore ! [Frown]

I seriously doubt we'll get a Secret Of My Success blu-ray here.

Posted by aTomiK (Member # 6575) on :

Well, it´s going downhill here too release wise but thankfully the prices are still low.

Future Film have turned their back on catalogue titles, Same goes with Atlantic Film and it seems that VLMedia now releases only old finnish stuff.

We have to thank Universal and Studio Canal because they have released some good catalogue films on blu-ray this year.
All moviebuffs are ordering import stuff so i kind of understand what´s going on but it´s still sad.

That's a cool sleeve. The front-cover almost makes it look like an action / adventure movie.

Speaking of covers.. How about that Executioner part 2 poster ? That looks pretty impressive, right ?
Well, since this one has been directed by James Bryan (who also did Don't Go In The Woods.. Alone),
it's probably another micro-budget actioner, nowhere near as cool as the awesome poster may suggest.
They sure knew how to sell it though ! [Big Grin]

Posted by aTomiK (Member # 6575) on :

They sure knew, the cover art was very important part of the film.
Nowadays you have 1-3 heads (or 17 like in Expendables [Big Grin] ) and that´s it! 80s rule supreme when it comes to poster art.

Scorpion Releasing brings Spellbinder (1988) and Bobbie Jo And The Outlaw (1976) to blu-ray.

Bobbie Jo And The Outlaw was initially planned for a dvd release in MGM's Midnite Movies Collection,
but never materialized. Eventually it did get a made-on-demand DVD-R release in 2011, but some reports
claim these discs to be defective. Scorpion Releasing now presents it complete with commentary and interviews !

Pity by the sounds of it the editor wasn't much cop johnny,I'll still probably give it a go when I get chance, johnny have you heard of an 80s throwback slasher called - lost after dark which has just been released by anchorbay in the us,I've heard some pretty good things about it.

Wouldn't mind giving that a try also!

which are : Lars Von Trier's Nymphomaniac (the very very long version), Dead Snow 2, The Editor, Inherent Vice,
and It Follows. I've read some very positive reviews for that last one, but i haven't seen it yet.
I hope i haven't set my expectations too high. Has anyone seen it, by any chance ?

More news from the fine folks at Scream Factory :

www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=17745

The House Where Evil Dwells had a fairly soft looking transfer on the MGM region 1 dvd released over a decade ago.
Scream Factory provides a new transfer, plus it's being paired up with Ghost Warrior (aka Swordkill)
for some extra samurai-orientated, 80's madness.. Pretty cool i'd say ! [Smile]

Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :

Swordkill is not to bad johnny,I have the old UK entertainment in video vhs sat on my shelf, the house where evil dwells with the giant crabs is pretty bonkers and a bit of a strange one but watchable, make a good twin pack and I'll probably look into picking up this release.

Also coming out I see is a bo dereck double pack of bolero and ghosts can't do it also in January -

Yeah, right before he walks out of the institute where they un-froze him.
The scene takes place about 30 minutes into the movie.

Here's something interesting..

Every now and then i'm looking for new dvd and blu-ray releases from Germany, simply because there's a lot
of cool stuff that seems to be exclusive to the German market unavailable anywhere else.. like this one :

 -

The Challenge (1982) starring Scott Glenn was released last august on a limited edition blu-ray + dvd combopack.

I completely forgot about this movie.. but now that i know it's out there, I WANT IT ! [Big Grin]

Let's refresh our memories with the awesome trailer : www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCGwD3Egrmk

The challenge is a lot of fun johnny I have an old cbs fox vhs of it,I know it's getting a us release as well in the new year.

Lady in white is really great as well!

 -

Just released in Japan to blu ray is exterminator 2 which is also scheduled for a UK blu ray release next year from 101 films who's releases are a pretty Mixed bunch and as bare bones as you can get but there toy soldiers blu ray was not to bad quality wise as were a couple of the others!

That i didn't know !

I do have relatively easy access to buying German imports here, and i really like that dual cover,
so i may prefer getting the German combopack depending on what it'll cost of course.

Like i said before, lately it's been annoyingly expensive to buy imports from the US because of
the low value of the euro, so it may actually be cheaper to get the one from Germany.

Pray For Death (1985)

Initially announced in the UK as a 101 Films release, Pray For Death gets the special edition treatment in the US,
as it's been picked up by Arrow Films.

Fully uncut, including a brand new Sho Kosugi interview !

Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :

I reckon that arrow release of pray for death will blow the 101 films version out of the water johnny,101 films rarely have any extras and there transfers are sometimes pretty questionable.

The challenge is coming to blu ray from kino lorber in February of next year -
http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Challenge-Blu-ray/133738/

Like you say the German release looks pretty great and if it's likely to save you money seems the best way to go!

Posted by Johnny Roarke is reckless (Member # 9826) on :

Yeah, even if the 101 and Arrow discs have the same transfer, most collectors will definitely want to have the Arrow version.

By the way, the releases from that new UK label Signal One Entertainment are getting some pretty good reviews.
Dvdbeaver did reviews for Signal One's first batch of blu-ray titles, and they appear to be pretty solid.
Plus the fact that they seem to be producing their own extra's certainly helps too !

They've got - eliminators and dungeonmaster double bill coming out in the next week or two and the 1983 horror anthology - nightmares which I haven't seen for quite a while.

Looking down at a few vhs here and this one I'd seriously like shout factory to pick up for a blu ray release -

Makes more sense pairing - the destroyer aka shadow of death with another Perkins film such as - edge of sanity than when they scream factory was originally going to pair it up with - scarecrows, edge of sanity i think is really good fun actually and is probably the better of the two films - this will make for a really fun release especially for anyone new to both films.

I'll definitely pick up the blu when it's released especially as I only own - shadow of death (the destroyer) on vhs.

Never seen - backroads or - ice pirates but would like to do so.

The house where evil dwells is a bit of a strange one,it's pretty slow going stuff but has the odd scene to perk your interest, swordkill I don't dislike its actually pretty good fun,I've watched it a few times over the years.

If it was just - house where evil dwells as a standalone title I'd probably think twice about a purchase but as its a double bill with swordkill I can definitely see myself picking this up at some point!

The zero boys I think is awesome,roll on - grandmother's house,blind date,the wind,etc etc.

The cover sucks for Zapped. I have Olive's 'Plain Clothes' which has a commentary, I just wish they would do something like that for all their releases.

Worth pointing out they are also supposedly releasing 'Rich Kids'.

I actually bought this last year. Released by a company called Slasher//Video, and distributed through Olive Films.

I got the dvd version, eventhough i knew it was also being released on blu-ray. I assumed it wouldn't make
that much of a difference because of the low-fi origins of the source material. Turned out it was actually
really impressive... Don't know if i would buy it again though.

Arrow's gonna do 52 Pick-Up this october ! -

Posted by Logan 5 (Member # 1467) on :

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but Arrow is releasing a special edition DVD/Blu Ray of Joe Dante's 'Matinee'. The features look a little bland at the mo, but any features for this movie in a DVD/Blu combo set would make it worth it.

I know it's not an 80's movie, but I grandfather it in as I always felt it was an honourary 80's movie.

Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :

Matinee is a wonderful, overlooked, small film that perfectly captures its era and the films of William Castle. It's Joe Dante's best film and a real love letter for movie buffs.

Posted by Logan 5 (Member # 1467) on :

It really is. Dante has a great way with portraying youth. He manages to weave an unpretentious ode to childhood with his love of those early horror movies seamlessly. Like so much of Dante's post Gremlins output it just didn't seem to be as big a hit as it deserved to be.

It always makes me weep thinking what could have been had he been allowed to actually finish Explorers.

Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :

Yeah, Explorers is a really sad cinematic basket case. I know that Dante was trying for a really special, evocative depiction of youth, but the first three-quarters of the movie, while not bad, are slow. Then in the last 20 minutes, the kids get to the alien spaceship, and it is so out-of-nowhere and weird, like a reel dropped in from another movie. And then it basically ends. It just comes to a screeching halt. I remember seeing it in a theatre back in 1985 and being really disappointed, no make that angry. Here's this slow-burn build up to what. Nothing. I know a lot of people like it, but I consider it be one of those artistically misguided disasters that only a really good director can make like Coppola's Jack, DePalma's The Bonfire of the Vanities, Cimino's Heaven's Gate, and Refn's Only God Forgives.

Gotta say, as a kid I *loved* the first two thirds (the bulk of what they cut when he was forced to hack a version together came from the first section of the film). When they get to the spaceship the film becomes an homage to the rubber aliens and vintage TV talk from his youth that Dante loves. In Matinee the same thing is brilliant, but in this it just doesn't fit. It is definitely his only 'incomplete' feeling film. But considering what the studio did I'm not surprised. I don't know if what he was going for would ever have worked, but it would certainly have made for a better movie experience.

The original shooting script is a very very different beast. It goes for more of an existential thing, where I don't think you ever see the aliens, but the kids go to another planet and play baseball. I have a copy but I don't remember it that well.

Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :

You hit it. Explorers feels incomplete. Matinee perfectly synchronizes the growing up in the 60s plot with the William Castle homage, and it's brilliant. I especially love the way John Goodman and his film Mant! parallel the hopes and fears that people had back in the 60s. I'm a fan of Dante, and he's made some wonderful, beloved films, but this little one is my favorite. It really is special.

Explorers would have been better as a more existential piece. Robert Picardo is one of those guys who is great in any part, but even he can't save the rubber aliens joke ending.

Posted by Logan 5 (Member # 1467) on :

I always thought Exlorers would have worked better as a kind of junior 'Contact'. They didn't really make enough of the two separate 'pulls' of the Ethan Hawke character. His crush on Amanda Peterson was highlighted at the start, and then doesn't go anywhere (partly due to what they cut, and partly due to shifting the focus to the aliens). I don't think the rubber aliens could ever have been satisfying, but I would really love to see the movie Dante could have made had he been given the time. I think he had a chunk of rough shot material, another chunk he hadn't had he chance to shoot, and they were still kind of writing the final act as they went. When the studio moved up the release date he had to just use what he had. Scenes that I would have killed to see as a kid wound up being cut (for one reason or another). There was a birthday party scene, a revenge on the bully scene, more fleshing out of the family dynamics of all the boys, a little more of the **** Miller character, and so on. Dante tried to locate some of the footage a few years ago but said he thinks it must be gone. It's my holy grail to see, but I never will... only the teasing pictures remain!

I think Dante feels Matinee is something of a personal film. He was a horror movie lover at the same time as the film is set. There's an interview with him on YouTube where he says some of the stuff in the bedroom (magazines and stuff) were his personal childhood belongings.

Chopping Mall, of course, to those in the know, is a classic 80s exploitation film. And I like Blood Diner too! I agree, JRir. Lionsgate is so hit-and-miss. I hope that they at least have nice transfers.

I love Chopping Mall but have never seen Blood Diner though it's definitely one I would like to check out!

Lions Gate have a huge library of horror yet to be released to Blu-ray so I hope this is just the start of things and that we will see many more titles to follow!

Yeah, Lionsgate has tons of stuff that I can't even keep track of, including things that they have the rights to that they didn't originally release. As I said, they are fairly hit-and-miss on transfers, sometimes good, sometimes not so good. I wish they paid a little more attention to their DVD/Bluray holdings.

Dead of Winter (1987) with Mary Steenburgen
Dreamscape (1984) with Dennis Quaid and Kate Capshaw

Slumber Party Massacre II (1987) and Slumber Party Massacre III (1990)
To Live and Die in L.A. (1985)

Also, The Abyss (1989) is confirmed for a 2017 release after being recently remastered for 4K.

Dead Ringers should look great in Bluray, all gray and cold looking, same with Dead of Winter.

Seems like Lionsgate is bringing the Vestron Video label back to life.

Chopping Mall will be their first release, and Blood Diner their second, plus it is rumoured several other titles
are being prepared for blu-ray releases, including The Return Of The Living Dead 3 !

It actually does look like they've put that little extra loving care into these releases.

Here are the specs on the Chopping Mall disc :

Looks very good!

I read about the Vestron revival and hope that they will release more stuff. It´s such a great label and the vhs tapes are rare items.

I´m especially looking for to see Blood Diner. Only seen it once back in the late 80s.

I actually do have Blood Diner on a German import dvd, which was a good release for the time when it came out,

I've always quite enjoyed Larry Cohen's thriller Special Effects and have the region 1 MGM Dvd and will probably look at upgrading to the Blu when possible!

Eric Bogosian plays a right sleazebag in it!

I wonder if Cohen's previous movie Blind Alley aka Perfect Strangers will get a release from them soon as well?

Larry Cohen is always worth checking out. He has some of the best screenplay ideas around, though sometimes they are kind of rough in the execution. He's very underrated. Of all the stuff that he's done, I like Black Caesar, Hell Up in Harlem, It's Alive, God Told Me To (my favorite), Q, The Stuff, I the Jury, Perfect Strangers, Special Effects, It's Alive III, A Return to Salem's Lot, Best Seller (excellent mainstream Cohen film), Phone Booth, and Cellular. In such a long career, he did over a dozen solid screenplays--and I haven't even seen a lot of his TV stuff--not to mention he directed a bunch of those films too. Great, underrated talent.

Larry Cohen is a legend!

Of course he´s better known as a thriller man but he even left his mark on the early 80s horror comedy/spoof genre with Full Moon High.

However, they ARE listed on the site of their US distributor MVD Entertainment Group, which can be found here :

Yeah I have that same release Johnny and I would be willing to upgrade as well if there release was stacked with extras and was an uncut version (I do very much doubt it) of the film instead of the R rated print found on the Millcreek double pack!

There are rumour's of a gorier version out there but are they just that rumour's?

Talking about future releases the finnish horror film Kuutamosonaatti (The Midnight Sonata, 1988) finally sees a dvd release october 14th.
It´s packed with the ´91 sequel and i´m really looking for to see these again.

Here´s the plot summary from IMDb:

"A female fashion model Anni Stark (played by Tiina Björkman) takes leave from the fashion business and goes to Finland's Lappland
(a wilderness region in Northern Finland, better known as the home of Santa Claus) for a vacation.
Little does she know that there's a totally lunatic bunch of local hillbillies living in a nearby farmhouse.
The plot thickens as one of the residents begins to harass Anni, who is left alone in the wilderness with only her dog to protect her.
Too bad for her that her dog turns out to have divided loyalties.."

Both Björkman and Katariina Souri (ex- Kärkkäinen who was also in Playboy) who stars in the sequel are very beautiful women.
Fun stuff! Too bad it´s in finnish only with no subs.

Never heard of Deathrow Gameshow before but i see that it´s a CIP film and includes Debra Lamb so i´m interested!

The cover art for The Nighmare Sisters and Murder Weapon/Deadly Embrace releases leave a lot to be desired.

Sleeves are reversible, with different artwork on the flipside.. so that wouldn't be a problem, i guess.

The good news is that Murder Weapon and Deadly Embrace were actually shot on film (well, 16mm that is.. but still),
contrary to information on the Imdb, which claims Deadly Embrace was shot on video.
So, in the capable hands of the fine folks at Vinegar Syndrome, these should turn out wonderful ! [Smile]

I really like Cohen & Tate, an excellent, but badly titled film, still in search of its cult. And Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is one of the darkest, bleakest portraits of violence on screen. It's not a film to revisit much, but it's a classic.

Yes, this is good news - I saw this info. on another site as well.

Colors was a great police procedural film, with great acting by both Duvall & Penn. I saw this on DVD back in the 200X's.

I've got Slaughterhouse on Blu-ray from 88 films and it was not bad at all I quite enjoyed it though the opening credits could put some folk of eating meat for a while!

Love to check out both Witchtrap and Don't Answer The Phone as I haven't seen either.

I know Scorpion are looking at releasing Silent Scream 1980 (well made I believe in 79 but not released till 80) early next year which will be pretty cool as i've not watched it for a while and it's not a bad little slasher with a good creepy atmosphere!

Yeah, i have the 88Films blu-ray of Slaughterhouse too. Still, it will be interesting to see how it compares to
the upcoming Vinegar Syndrome edition. VS has an amazing track record, with several of their 80s horror titles,
like Evils Of The Night and Hobgoblins, being rewarded a full 5 star rating for video-quality on Blu-ray.com.

I love Silent Scream too. They did a pretty good job on the dvd version, which was Scorpion's very first release, i think.

It's amazing how - just by using the original art - the movies look better. I've never understood why they didn't do that for DVD releases too. Someone was paid to design an eye catching poster back in the day, which was then used (usually) on the video release, but for DVD they just said 'just photoshop some **** and it'll look fine'.

I love Red Dawn and have it on Blu but there's much room for improvement as the picture is not overly great for a high def transfer and like you Logan I'd much rather that they always used the original artwork!

I love the original Us one sheet poster art from above the most but i also didn't dislike the Warner VHS/Beta art below.

Wow. I'd never thought that I'd see Windows out on Bluray. United Artists wound up being really embarrassed by it, as it was protested as being homophobic. It is so sleazy and politically incorrect, a terrible film. This was the only directing effort by the great cinematographer Gordon Willis, who filmed all the Godfather films and lots of Woody Allen's best stuff.

Windows, YW, is so politically incorrect that it makes lesbians out to be homicidal predators. In that respect, it's the female sleaze equivalent of Cruising. Even director Gordon Willis was ashamed of the film and said that he shouldn't have directed it. He never directed again.

Sounds like Vinegar Syndrome's version blows the 88 films (which I do own) version away, been so many Blu's that I've picked up that have since had better releases especially lately take Poltergeist 2 and 3 for instance, plus you've got Streets Of Fire coming in may which is bound to improve on the Second Sights UK Blu Ray's rather lacklustre transfer.

Depends really on whether you feel it's worth double dipping or not but it can become quite an expensive habit!

plus their upcoming House 1-4 complete collection in March and the Phantasm box-set in April..

So it seems there's definitely some of my money going to get spent on double-dipping in the next couple of weeks.

I've preordered the House boxset of Amazon so very much looking forward to that, part 3 The Horror Show is the uncut print as well unlike the Us scream factory edition.

If the price drops for Phenomena I would definitely be interested in double dipping for that,at the moment I have the Arrow first release Blu with the window box sleeve.

I think that the Bill Murray film Where the Buffalo Roam is grossly underrated. It has some very, very funny scenes in it such as when he meets Richard Nixon in the bathroom and gives him the speech about the "screwheads" and the "doomed." That always makes me laugh.

Thanks for the updates.

"Streets of Fire" is a great, iconic (but somewhat obscure) rock "fable" with an incredible rock soundtrack - IIRC, these are all original songs that were created for the film. A good double-bill is watching this along with Michael Pare's other '80's rock film, "Eddie and the Cruisers" (1983).

I haven't seen "Return of Swamp Thing", but it looks interesting - I re-watched the first film on Blu a while back, and the print looked great. There was also a short-lived ST cartoon & live-action TV series in the '90's - neither of which I saw much of.

Teen Witch... hmm... nice that they layed on some decent features. Always been a little 'meh' on the movie though. Nice cast and some nice ideas in a movie which doesn't entirely hang together. There was a reason it wasn't a big hit back in the day. Mind you, the confusing branding tieing it in with 'Teen Wolf' didn't really help.

I wish Mark Hartley would get around to doing one of his excellent documentaries about Crown International, an interesting company with a storied history of very fun exploitation pictures in the halcyon days of the 70s and 80s. While Crown, unlike AIP or Avco Embassy, doesn't have a catalog containing a few masterpieces, their films almost always had really enjoyable and entertaining elements: like the stupid theme song to Van Nuys Boulevard with the repetitive, but catchy, chorus of "Van Nuys...Van Nuys" or my favorite, Malibu High, where a teenage girl is a high school student sleeping her way to good grades by day and a mob hit woman by night. ROFL They just don't make 'em like that any more. Red Jacobs and his family really knew how to sell films to drive-ins. I miss those crazy ballyhoo showmen of scuzzy product of that era like Joseph Brenner, Terry Levine, Jerry Intrator, and who could forget Edward L. Montoro of Film Ventures International. The story goes that, embroiled in a bitter divorce, one day Montoro took $1 million out of the FVI bank account, told his employees to carry on, skipped to Mexico, and was never heard from again. If the films weren't good, at least the behind-the-scenes stories of their making and distribution were great!

Not a documentary, but there is a book on Shapiro Glickenhaus Entertainment.. and from what i've heard, it's pretty wild !

The book is called The Untold In-Depth Outrageously True Story Of Shapiro Glickenhaus Entertainment.

Looks hefty (close to 500 pages) and very informative.. I think i should order a copy myself ! [Big Grin]

Looking forward to the Young Warriors big time,a 2k restoration and no doubt the uncut print as well I say bring it on plus Waxwork (which I already have on DVD)and Return Of The Living Dead 3 will be on my to get list as well!

Love the original C.H.U.D but have never seen the sequel but by all accounts it's an in name sequel only with no real connection between the two plus I've never seen Blood Diner before so will look at checking them both out!

Some great releases on the Horizon what with Hell Night,The Flamingo Kid,One Dark Night,The Taking Of Beverly Hills,Three O'clock High and countless others coming Stateside and Starman,Electric Dreams and Dreamscape +The Vestron Collection coming from the UK and that's not taking into account the rest of Europe plus the Australian market!
