I saw this movie when it came out at age 7 and loved it! one of my favorite christmas comedies.

I'm with you on that! I've already watched it twice this Christmas season! LOL

I will "third" that motion. I think that it got a completely unwarranted bad critical rap when it was originally released. I'd like to think that a lot of people have discovered it and enjoyed it over the years. Nobody's funnier than Bill Murray when he's on his game.

What was wrong with it? did critics think it was making a joke out of Christmas Carol? it is a cult fave.

I DVRed it last week and tried to watch it. I've tried to watch it several times over the years and I just can't get into it.

Scrooged did fine commercially, and since it's been on TV almost every Christmas since it came out I'm not sure it could really be considered 'cult'. In fact, I think I once had a discussion about the internet itself killing off the very concept of 'cult'... which is a separate issue entirely!

The critics thought that there was some stuff in it that was in bad taste. That the 'modernising' of 'A Christmas Carol' was fine, but combined with the crudeness they said lacked the genuine heart of the story and went for cheap laughs. But apart from that it got okay reviews.

My guess would be they may have felt there was too much cynicism from a certain point of view that may have undercut the message. I disagree; the facets work well with each other for an interesting take on the tale (although the screenwriters have said they had a longer, darker version in mind initially before it morphed into what it did in the end). A great cast surrounds a great as usual at the time Murray, and most of the jokes connect quite well ("WHY did you do that!?" "Sometimes you have to SLAP them in the face just to get their attention." "Fine, go ahead, slap me in the face; but you KICKED ME in the...!")

I've always enjoyed "Scrooged" especially the tv promos with the six million dollar man Lee Majors.

It is not on my annual Christmas movie rotation, but it could be.

I wouldn't consider it cult either.....because I saw it in the theater and it was packed.....and I remember a lot of promotion for it. I had no idea it wasn't a critics fav but then again most of the movies I loved then weren't [Smile]

I remember being in the theater and with the end "put a little love in your hearts" "now this side of the audience sing" and the theater was silent lol

It really is one of my favorite christmas movies I try to watch it every year!

Trying to get in the Xmas spirit so decided to watch "Scrooged" tonight. I've seen it a few times before but didn't really get how awesome it is until I watched it tonight. Bill Murray was both hilarious and sympathetic and I loved all of the 80's-ness like the music by Danny Elfman and the TV promo in the beginning for the movie "The Day the Reindeer Died" or something like that LOL.

This movie doesn't seem to get played on TV as much as it used to(or am I missing it??) which is kinda nice to be honest because a lot of holiday movies I love get over-played (Christmas Vacation and Christmas Story come to mind...).

Devolution here,

It's my brother's favorite Christmas movie. I love it as well just because Bill Murray plays an excellent Scrooge.
