I watched this with my husband last night. I had only seen about twenty minutes of it on TV before. I wonder why it took me so many years to rent it? Hahaha. It may not have been the best movie but it definately had that 80s feel I love so well (gotta love Kerry Green listening to the FOOTLOOSE soundtrack on HUGE headphones. How 80s is THAT?! hahaha)

I have a real soft spot for this one. I vaguely recall Howard Jones being played in the background too!

Carl 'The Jerk' / 'Summer School' Reiner was the director.

This one never seems to get the credit it deserves. Nothing overtly spectacular, but professionally done and entertaining to watch from start to finish ("Uh, Flight, there's another jet in that sector; what are you trying to do, mate us?"). The whole cast is great, with Candy nicely carrying the film as usual, and a nice soundtrack to top it all off. If only more family films could be of this caliber these days.

To go back to what was mentioned at the beginning of the thread, I believe the TV cut has a few additional scenes not on the theatrical print (one I know for sure is halfway on the trip down, where he refuses to drive another inch until the kids stop arguing, but when they do, the car won't restart), so it would be fine to watch on the small screen first if that's an option you'd prefer.

"Fish Fingers!"

Note the bit towards the end of the movie when they dub the little girl's voice with an adult speaking high-pitched!

The VHS is very special to me. It was the first time I saw the trailer for my childhood favourite 'Explorers'.

'Summer Rental' is part of a trilogy of John Candy movies that don't get talked about much, along with 'Armed and Dangerous' (with meg Ryan) and 'Volunteers' (with Tom Hanks). Ah... memories!

Devolution here,

I saw it in the movies as a child. Hey buddy, calm down, I'm watching the Smurfs! Yeah, you ever seen the one were papa smurf hits the guy in the bed with a crutch. I love this movie more now then I did in 1986.

We are DEVO

Actually if you go on YOU TUBE and look up "worst.dub.ever' you can see the little girl wants to play in the basmenet with grizzzly old pirate dub. Legend has it Kerry Green is responsible for the ludicrous dub.

Kerry Green is a goddess, thus anything she is in is amazing by default.

There is a flawless logic to your post.

Watched Summer Rental and i like it a lot.
Some great jokes and Candy is on fire.

The rest of the cast is also solid, especially Rip Torn
and i really want to live next to Lois Hamiltonīs character Vicki Sanders [Wink]
Vicki: What do you think of these? Well, how do they look?
Jack Chester: Uh, similar?

Very nice theme song "Turning Around" from Jimmy Buffett.

One of the bits that made me smile the most is also the most referenced when I hear people reference it and that is the scene when he was trying to find a spot on the beach and tripping all over everyone.

Pretty simple laugh, but I really loved John Candy. I think I can honestly say that about maybe five or even six people in all of hollywood (and I am huge movie fan) that I would even care to know more about and he was one of them. He seemed like a true class act and one of the good ones.

Truer words were never said. I would recommend Martin Knellman's Laughing on the Outside if you wish to learn more. While the author is overtly dismissive of many of his pictures and can't help harping on the filmmakers' faults almost to a fault, it is still a pretty good biography, painting a sympathetic picture of a good man betrayed by the system he was trying to work in, but who never lost his humanity much as they tried to drain it out of him.

"Summer Rental" is a hilarious film, with a lot of great scenes.

One of my favorites is the scene when Candy asked that guy why all of these people were walking by his rental house, and the guy burped & pointed to the sign indicating that it was on the way to the beach - what a tremendous belch!:

Bumping this because I just watched it for the first time in forever and there were some fun posts on this thread. I mentioned it in the "last 80's movie you watched" thread. It was fun to have my kids watch it for the first time. I always love a John Candy movie [Smile]
