We've done a top 10 fav movie topic numerous times, but with the in influx of new people... it is always fun to get their opinions and see if any of ours have changed. A top 10 is extremely tough for me...not for the top 5 necessarily, but 6 through 10 are hard to lock in from week to week it seems..

But here you go:

10. Night of the Creeps

 -

The best 80's b-movie ever. Now on Blu-ray with loads of extras. Thrill Me!

9. The Heavenly Kid

 -

I can understand why this might perplex a few people, but my brother introduced me to Lewis Smith and I was hooked on this movie. Love when Bobby finds out that he is Lenny's father.

8. April Fool's Day

 -

Did I ever mention that I was a Deborah Foreman fan? Her performance as Buffy/Muffy was brilliant. Plus add in a cast of some 80's favs..Clayton Rohner, Deborah Goodrich, Amy Steel, Ken Olandt, and Thomas F. Wilson.

7. The Goonies

 -

Hey You Guys!! Who didn't dream of going on a Goonies type adventure for lost treasure as a kid?

6. Back to the Future

 -

DeLorean...Flux-Capacitor...Calvin Klein...88 MPH...Enchantment Under the Sea Dance...Pepsi Free...Marvin Berry...1.21 Gigawatts...

5. Night of the Comet

 -

I said "Night of the Creeps" was the best b-movie ever.. some will argue that "Night of the Comet" is a b-movie, but I don't see it as one. Comet Zombies, Tempest, Valley Girl Cheerleader, Uzis, shopping mall, and DMK.

4. Sixteen Candles

 -

Incredible cast... my fav John Hughes flick ... quotes .. Long Duk Dong .. Jake Ryan .. Farmer Ted .. underpants .. geek trapped under a glass table .. oh and a forgotten 16th birthday

3. The Lost Boys

 -

Sleep all day... Party all night... Never grow old... Never die... It's fun to be a vampire!

2. Can't Buy Me Love

 -

Wow after all the lack of love for Donald ... oops Ronald Miller it is scary that I still claim this movie is #2 on my list. But nobody said popularity was easy. Cindy Mancini, airplane graveyard, rhododendrons, broken moon, and the African Anteater ritual.

1. Valley Girl

 -

For anyone that somehow missed it.. this link will give you insight into my love for this incredible movie...

I watched Valley Girl for the first time last night..

Oh I love this topic, a lot! Here is my list and in no particular order because with me they all rank No. 1!

Sixteen Candles--For obvious reasons know to many of you on here..

The Breakfast Club--it just means so much and really spoke to me. What a cool bunch of people; I wish I had known in real life.

The Goonies--just can't get enough, talking about it makes me want to watch it right now!

Valley Girl--absolutly great soundtrack, great cast, just great everything! Right Valley..

Ghostbusters--I am hoping that we are not disappointed by No. 3. I still laugh out loud at this one.

Night of the Comet--Another great soundtrack, which I own! I am so excited about that. I just wish that there would have been more zombies in it.

Top Gun--introduced me to the hot sizzling sex scene and of course totally hot Val Kilmer.

Secret Admirer--great idea for a film, perfectly cast. I would watch it everytime it came on.

Fortress--Something about this 1986 HBO movie makes me feel like I am watching it for the first time everytime it is on. That is great filmmaking.

Footloose--once again an awesome soundtrack, one of the best. Just watched a high school play version of this last night, not nearly the same, but it was neat to hear famous lines again.

Honorable mentions: Lost Boys, Weird Science, Gremlins, Can't Buy me Love, Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, April Fool's Day, Friday the 13th (any will do), Dance til Dawn, Back to the Future, Christine, Robocop, and so many others!!!!

Great thread! I've said it before and I'll say it again: half of the movies some of you guys mention; I've NEVER even heard of much less seen, for so many films (including 'Valley Girl') weren't released or barely got any coverage in Europe.

So I kind of just watched a lot of the same movies over and over, fortunately, they were all great films, classics even, which stood the test of time.

Another reason Fast Rewind is the place to be: going back and discovering other people's favourite movies, then watching them for the first time.

1. Ghostbusters

2. Top Gun

3. The Breakfast Club

Devolution here,

This just in from the department of movies that few people pick.

1. Easy Money - Rodney Dangerfields first and greatest movie filmed in my hometown of Staten Island NY. So many great one liners

2. Hamburger the motion picture. America, you're getting burger hungry. Ali with an i, Valley and Cindy Mancini know that this is my true love that only doesn't get #1 because it's so hard to get.

3. Moving Violations - Bill Murray's brother in an underrated classic. Everyone is in this movie.

4. Just one of the Guys. If you haven't seen this then stop reading my list and get out there now.

5. Better off dead. K-12 dude. John Cusack is the best ever.

6. Evil Dead 2 - Bruce Campbell and a possessed hand.

7. sixteen candles - easily the best soundtrack of any movie ever. The key is that all of the songs were big then and the groups weren't yet. Soundtracks that are picked to be awesome never count. Example - Can't hardly wait.

8. Moving - Secretly my favorite Richard Pryor movie. Dana Carvey is awesome. What ever happened to those twins?

9. Transformers (1986) - The movie that introduced me to toys that die. I didn't know it was possible. It remains a scarring movie.

10. White Water Summer. It's Kevin Bacon's hidden gem. It doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Ever.

I just didn't want to include everything that everyone else likes.

We are DEVO

What makes this so hard for me - is I cant mix Horror movies with 80s movies. But there ARE some Horror movies that just SCREAM 80s like APRIL FOOLS DAY and LOST BOYS!

In no particular order:

16 CANDLES
VALLEY GIRL
JUST ONE OF THE GUYS
SECRET ADMIRER
BREAKFAST CLUB
PRETTY IN PINK
SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL
FERRIS BUELLER
WEIRD SCIENCE
BETTER OFF DEAD
THE SURE THING

Is that ten or eleven??? hahaha

I also love FOXES, but I consider that a 70s movie, even though it was made in 1980. IT FEELS more 70s to me.

yeah I hate to act like I kiss John Hughe's *** but really - I do! The man is a saint and shouldve been knighted in my book.

whats really interesting is my mom called me up a few weeks ago to tell me about an article she read about him and then she said "Do you know Ive never seen FERRIS BUELLERS DAY OFF? How could I NOT have seen that movie? You watched it all the time" and I said "well, I have the DVD , come over any time and watch it. I have a LOT of his movies." so yeah, its nice to know someone in their 70s is ready to BECOME a fan too.

@ Saturnchick:

YESSSSSSS! A little 'Tootsie' love!

If you were a real person and not an internet construct designed to make people feel like they're interacting with other human beings when in fact all they're doing is interacting with randomised numbers generated by a supercomputer that runs the planet... I'd kiss the back of your hand! Shame you don't have a hand. This will have to do:

To Logan - it's nice to see a fellow Tootsie fan, I always think that one gets lost in the shuffle. Although it is a great, great comedy, very rarely do hear people mention it as a favorite of the 80's.

To mama - I LOVE Stand by Me. I can't begin to tell you how many times I watched that one from about 1987-1991. Probably close to 100 times. Crazy, I know, but it's a fine movie, and it still stands up after all these years. Hooray for Stand by Me.

The ending with River always gets me.

People tend to forget about the more 'adult' movies of the 80's when making lists, because there's so much nostalgia and 'memories of youth' involved, so the films inevitably feature the young. Ironically, some of the biggest hits of the 80's almost never appear on people's fave lists.

I am a nut for order, but the task is too impossible to even get to just 10, so this will go against every impulse of mine and will just be random, so in truly no particular order and because these may not be my favorite movies of the 80's, but they get heavy enough rotation on cable channels that you can almost always find them on a Saturday or Sunday playomg somewhere and invariably derail some portion of my day...

Rocky IV

 -

...because if I'se can change, and you'se can change...EVERYBODY'S CAN CHANGE! [Big Grin]

Aliens

This will stop me dead in my tracks every, every, every, every, every, every single time! I thought of writing the an open letter to the various cable channel executives asking them to not play it on the weekends so I can return to my life, but I am dealing with it because it mostly comes on at night...mostly. [Wink]

Return of the Jedi

Like I said, not a list of top movies, but it is weirdly like a drug to me and I always find myself coming to with Ewoks dancing around a tree and music swelling to the Star Wars title theme and think to myself...did I just watch half of Jedi again?

Back to the Future

It just never gets old.

The Goonies

Thank you TNT Network...yes please! May I have another?!

 -

Up The Creek

I love this movie, always look for it and surprisingly enough I find it about a half dozen times a year. It is currently on Comcast Free Movies!

 -

Streets of Fire

I love the music, story, acting, just all of it and it is so "rainy saturday at 2 in the afternoon" consumable!

Wargames

And thank you to USA Network! [Razz]

Fast Times at Ridgemont High

Hey you guys had shirts on when you came in here.

"Well something happen'd to 'em"

 -

Caddyshack

Funnier every single time I watch it which should be theoretically impossible.

Footloose

Forget Avatar! This is why I need to get Blu Ray with 7.1 surround!!!

...and an amp that goes to 11. [Big Grin]

6. Gremlins
7. Ghostebusters
8. Temple of Doom
9. jewel of the Nile
10. Stand by Me

 - How did I forget about Wargames. I still get stick off my Brothers for watching that a gazillion times as a kid.

Posted by Pyromantic (Member # 7658) on :

this is impossible..there's just too many..but here's a rough attempt at it anyway..and I garantee this will not even be close to accurate..because I'll just change my mind on half the movies after I post this:

1. Rocky IV - What can I say?...Easily the best of the bunch with a kick *** soundtrack that I still crank up whenever the chance arises.

2. The Goonies: Do I really need to explain why??..it's a must for any 80's fan to have this movie on the list..nuff said.

3. Poltergeist - The first movie I ever saw that scared the Bejesus out of me enough to cause me to wet my pants and run home screaming like a little girl.

4. RAD - Yes, I was a rabid BMX'er growing up..so this movie was the be all, end all of all great movies to me growing up. And thanks to this movie I'll forever have the songs "Send Me An Angel" and "Thunder in your Heart" echoing in the deepest, darkest reccesses of my brain until I die.

5. Raiders of the Lost Ark - My dad got me addicted to all the Indiana Jones films at a young age...and Raiders is my fav of the bunch. I still jump up and cheer like a rabid football fan when the big bald Nazi gets diced by the German plane propellars.

6. Body Double - This would probably have to be my favorite in the De Palma collection, (followed closely by "Casualties of War"). Though it foreshadows heavily on not only 1, but 3 different Hitchc0ck films...it's still a brilliant film..no one will ever change my mind on that..and I don't remember old HitchC0ck films being as erotic as De Palma's works.

7. Gremlins - GIZMOOO!!! KAHKAH!!!> [Smile]

8. Batman - Well..this is a no-brianer simply because Batman's one of my all-time favorite Comic Books...so it goes without saying I loved the film..and I still think it's one of Tim Burton's Best works to date. And also one of Danny Elfman's best scores to date as well. It's Just an overall great package.

9. Aliens - Damn I'd still kill to get my hands on some of those Weapons!

10. Staying Alive - Yes, one of my favorites in my "Guilty Pleasure" collection. And dare I say it, I like this movie even more than it's counterpart "Saturday Night Fever."

....ok..there's my 10..as i said already though, this list isn't that accurate because if you only want 10..then you won't get that deadly of an accurate list from me.

Right off I'd say you would have needed to see it in the 80's when you were a kid to fully enjoy it. But if you were a BMX'er back in your youth...then you might get a kick out of it strictly from a nostalgic standpoint. But just don't expect the film to raise any IQ points...it's a film targeted toward kids after all. But if you still enjoy "kid flicks"...then I say check it out.

Gosh .. as I think about it now .. it is gonna be tricky to narrow down to just 10. I've really expanded my list based the last year and 1/2 of watching and discussing.

Plus, I need to change my thought process from favorite 80's movies to 80's movies that I can't get enough of. Ha.. Like there's a difference. [Big Grin]

Just about anything with animatronics/puppets and cheesy-comic stuff. Zombies and slashers.

Back to the Beach is my all time favorite movie!! 80's fun cheese. I could seriously watch this over and over. Close second is Overboard. That is on tv all the freaking time, but no matter what, I will sit and watch it. My husband always gives me such a hard time about that!

I can go for ten fairly big, well known films that really define the era for me, and that I've enjoyed many times over the years:

Breakfast Club
Some Kind of Wonderful
Manhunter
Videodrome
Return of the Jedi
Karate Kid II
Body Heat
Terminator
Bladerunner
Lethal Weapon

And then ten pictures that perhaps don't have so much exposure today, but still contain all sorts of mesmerising shades of the 80s spectrum:

Double Switch
Loverboy
Getting It Right
Gleaming The Cube
Breakin' 2
Chained Heat
Cutter's Way
The Ploughman's Lunch
Drowning By Numbers
Kings And Desperate Men
