This is awesome, Journey! Looks like 1981 was the best year for horror.

I will add:

The Boogens (1981)

What a great idea Journey! Cool list! As Veronica already noted, I think it is going to bring a lot of comments and memories of everyone's favorite years (and probably some good, fun debate)! [Wink]

While it is impossible for me to pick any one year for certain and every year had it share of absolute classics like 1980 which is a close one for me with Friday the 13th, The Fog (which is hugely underrated Carpenter), Prom Night and The Shining which is one of the best horror movies of all time (IMHO), I would have to say that I fall in the 83/84 time frame.

I was 13/14 at the time and was just getting into the Stephen King books, so for stuff like Cujo, Christine, The Dead Zone (also criminally underrated), Firestarter and Children of the Corn to be splashed up on the screen so soon after reading them was just such a treat.

To also be served up Gremlins, Terminator, Nightmare on Elm Street and Night of the Comet in the midst of all of this was just tooo muuuch fun! [Big Grin]

Special Note for 1988 which I remember so clearly because there wasn't as much access to movie news back then (for me anyways) and out of nowhere and after a 7 year hiatus, the man in the mask returned for another Halloween outing! I remember being just beside myself and needing to be the first one in line on opening night for this one I was so jacked to see it!

Cool thread Journey! Nice going... [Big Grin]

Those are the ones that I grew up on and remember best, too. My Dad was an early adopter of Betamax and used to tape everything off HBO. He was a huge King fan so he made sure to tape everything King-related. I watched those to death when I visited. They served as a gateway drug to all the Fridays, Elm Streets, Halloweens and Texas Chainsaws.

Journey, there is one 1980s horror film not on your list. "Death Ship," a Canadian film from 1980.

First of all .. Journey ...excellent lists! It is cool to see a compilation of 80's movies by genre and year. It wasn't easy to choose a year, but I'm going with 1986:

April Fool's Day, Night of the Creeps, Chopping Mall, Deadly Friend, Trick or Treat, Vamp & Witchboard...wow

I have never seen Night of the Creeps, but I also saw an earlier thread on its recent release on blu-ray or something and am kind of getting the sense that I have been missing out and should probably seek this out soon!

I need to see it too, Earl.

The early 80's were some of my most memorable scares...cause I was under 10 years old! [Eek!]

1980
- Alligator (Remember watching this on TV at 8 years old...scared the livin crap outta me...just got it on DVD)
- The Changeling ( Actually one of my favs...to freak my wife out once in a while, I whisper J-O-S-E-P-H in her ear)

1981
- An American Werewolf In London (At 9 years old, this was scary!)

1982
- Poltergeist (Me and two of my friends planned to sleep in my camper for an overnight which was sitting in my driveway...we watched Poltergeist in the house...and of course, never made it to the camper!

Great list journey!

Journey, I have thought of two more films that could be added to the list. "Galaxy of Terror," an 1981 American film and also "Xtro," a 1983 British film.

Journey, there's a movie called Cassandra(1989) and one called Dark August (don't know the year; early to mid 80s).

I am SO GLAD to see Ghosthouse in someone's list!!! I loved that movie and it's not easy to find info about it.

Great list!

But pettyfan...which 80's year was the best year for horror in your opinion. You are one of the horror masters on here and it would cool to hear your thoughts.

Posted by pettyfan (Member # 2260) on :

I guess I'd have to say 1987-1989 because those were the years I really started to appreciate horror movies. I've seen more of the movies from those years than from the early 80s.

On a side note, guess what I found on Amazon?? GHOSTHOUSE!! It was in a DVD combo with another movie (can't remember the name, it was a 66 movie). Anyhoo, it was just $16.99 so I had to get it!! I also got the Stuff. Haven't seen that one in forever.

Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :

pettyfan...."Ghosthouse" was great..that little girl and the creepy doll still haunt me. Haven't seen it in years though.

And "The Stuff" is a flick I remember discussing on the Halloween thread!

I added Cassandra. Dark August was from 1976 so I added it to my work-in-progress '70s Horror List.

Thanks! I couldn't find a date for Dark August. I saw it in the 80s so I guess I assumed it was from then!

There is a 1980 American film that should be added to the list: "Dressed to Kill." And you can append "Terminal Choice," a 1985 Canadian film.

I added them both. I originally left Dressed to Kill off on purpose because I thought it was more of a murder mystery than a true horror, but I guess it has more than enough slasher elements to merit a spot on the list.
