"Gregory's Girl" is a Scottish gem of a flick. It wasn't until recently that I got a chance to see and hear it with the intended Scottish dialect.

 -

"Gregory's Girl" is a sweet coming-of-age story of Gregory, a slightly geeky outsider. His love is football (soccer), but soon he falls in love with the girl who replaces him on the school team. Gregory at first is very upset that he will be replaced, however, when he sees who is replacing him, he almost instantly falls in love with her. The rest of the film highlights his efforts to get the girl, Dorothy, to go out with him. Then when his special night does not work out as planned, Gregory discovers the difference between lust and love.

I'm totally enamored by "Gregory's Girl" and think it is such a clever and entertaining flick. Gregory Underwood was awkward while still quite charming. Dorothy was that cool girl that just had too much going on in her life to notice a good thing in front of her. In the end, okay I won't give it away, but the last 15 minutes are magical in my opinion.

Clare Grogan was outstanding in this movie and after realizing that she was the lead singer of Altered Images....I had to make a couple of itunes purchases. Even cooler, the Altered Images tune "Happy Birthday" was used in the John Hughes film "Sixteen Candles". Fav tune is "I Could Be Happy".

For folks that know this movie well....How could Allison Forster that played Madeline Underwood, Gregory's wise 10-year-old sister not have been in more stuff after her awesome role in "Gregory's Girl"?

"Did you know when you sneeze it comes out at 100 miles per hour?"

I never heard of this flick until I saw you find it for someone a while back. It does sound interesting....and the list grows.

I've loved this for quite some time. I was a big Altered Images fan back in the day, so I seeked it out because the singer Claire Grogan was in it. A feel good coming of age movie set in early 80's Scotland. Would love to see a special edition DVD.

When you watch it, make sure it's the original, and not the 'overdubbed for the US market' version.....

Oh - and look out for the penguin.....

Decent film but i think the ending could have been better. It seems to end suddenly, when your expecting something else to happen.

Secret Admirer, Some Kind of Wonderful and Sure Thing had some similar cues with the guy ending up with the more undertstated, but more compatible woman.

About that Penguin...I thought it was hilarious, but was there any kind of inside joke I didn't pick up about its presence in the movie.

"There is definitely something in the air tonight Charlie."

I loved the flat on your back dancing scene.

Nope - absolutely no reason for the Penguin - other than to suggest there's some drama stuff going on somewhere, and it's a) badly organized, and b) got a penguin in it - if the kid could only find the right room.....

Hewsy, gotta disagree about the ending - I reckon it's one of the better endings, because it leaves you feeling positive for his future (whatever that turns out to be).

The times I watched this film on VHS during the 80s. A real gem. I love the scene when he's late for school and is crossing the playground to the main building and pretending he's playing a game of footie, and the teachers and watching him from the window wetting themselves laughing. Cool.

Watched this a few days ago..came across it on netflix..never heard of it before? I thought it was just ok. I can see the sort of "charm" everyone found in it, but I couldn't fully pay close attention. I had a hard time with the voices, and the character of Dorothy was annoying.
The ending was sweet though. I just didn't take much of a liking to the characters, I guess.

Good enough to see once, for me.

This film was kinda ruined for me after watching the sequel last year. Just awful [Frown]

Never knew that there was a sequel.
I´d like to see Gregory's Two Girls (1999) but thanks for the warning Helen.
May i ask, why it was a bad movie?

It was dull as hell, the plot was just nonsense, it was sleazy and Sinclair was really poor. All the fun and charm of the first was non existent here. It made me cringe [Frown]

Actually , the plot was fine, it was the CIA subplot that was wrong. And that tells you all you need to know....

Damn, they made a sequel? Some things are just better left untouched.

Weak at best. Gordon was ok, but what was 'charming' on a youth was slightly irritating on an adult. He basically looked like an idiot in the sequel, and the simplicity of the original had been ejected in favour of some kind of social statement.

I have watched Gregory's Girl twice so far and reckoned it was quite comical.

I would be glad to own a copy.
