I am a huge fan of 80's movies and have been a huge fastrewind fan for awhile now. I've only just regisered and am surprised to see no mention of one of the funniest and best loved actors of the decade, yes folks, Mr. John Candy. I love the big guys stuff, from Uncle Buck to The Great Outdoors, through, Planes Trains and Brewsters Millions. He stole the show every time he popped up in a small role, like The Blues Brothers or Splash. A true 80's giant and I am collecting as many of his works as I can.
So come on people, show John some love, 'Orange whip?, Orange Whip? Three Orange Whips'.... [Big Grin]

"You know something, (the earrings) make you look a little older too. I mean, not just a little bit. You could pass for, oh, eighteen or nineteen."

And Halloween would have been birthday #58 for him; yes, I have kept track through the years, so good timing with this thread.

I don't know if you guys are aware of this great site dedicated to Big John. It's simply Johncandy.com. A really great site where you can read all about the man, and watch countless clips from his movies. My favourite has to be the interrogation scene by Macauley Culkin on him in Uncle Buck!! 'What's your record for consecutive questions asked?' Classic!!

I've probably mentioned it before, but since it's getting closer and we've given him a whole thread here, might as well mention it again:  an animated Earth Day Special (The Magic 7) he recorded voiceovers for in the early 90s is at last check slated for a December 17th home video release.  I'm not entirely sure they left his work in the final version (and reports appear conflicted at the moment), but look for it, because if we're lucky he's still got one last performance to give us (as a dragon named "Smokestack Sam" if they left him in).

I think my all time favorite John candy has got be SCTV. I know it isn't a movie but....oh well

5. The Great outdoors
4. Summer rental
3. Stripes
2. Spaceballs tied with Brewsters Millions
1. SCTV

But there are so many more that I just Love I had to think about these for a long time to get this list.

And of his SCTV characters, I'd say the top 5 would be:

1. Johnny LaRue (simply because the character's so much an anti-Candy; but at least he got his crane shot once)
2. Billy Sol Hurok (he even blows himself up pretty darn good)
3. Peppi Longsocks (priceless skit)
4. Dr. Tongue (how about 3-D House of Cards one of these days? I don't think Count Floyd had to suffer through that one yet)
T5. Tommy Shanks ("Hi, how're you doing? Doing pretty good myself...")
T5. Morley Markle ("A terrestrial, day-active animal, the woodchuck hibernates in snowy climes.")

And his impersonations of Orson Welles, Luciano Pavarotti (the best being on the Godfather parody show when he holds that last note for half the show), and especially Divine were the best based on real people.

Nobody has mentioned Delirious yet. It's a great vehicle for him, and a wonderfully innovative plot!

3. Peppi Longsocks (priceless skit)

one of the best [Smile] I was never a big SCTV fan, I tried and tried but just didn't connect with the humor, with the exception of some of their skits, and this one is one of the best.

I was so depressed when he died, he gave me so many laughs. I still chuckle when I think of that part he played in Volunteers where he got brainwashed into thinking he's a chinese communist soldier. Candy forever.
