I just watched The Hunger, 1983. David Bowie, Susan Sarandon, Catherine Deneuve. This is definitely not your normal run of the mill vampire movie. Pretty dark and demented even for a vamp flick, but interesting. Some parts reminded me of Interview with the Vampire. Anybody else see this one and what is your take on it?

OMG, how could I have forgotten this on in my top 10 vampires movie list? I saw it when I was younger in the 80's and at the time i didn't appreciate it that much. Probably too slow moving for the little Lost Boys fan that I was. LOL. But watching it later on I liked it a lot better. The opening scene featured a favorite band Bauhaus, which set the whole movie for me. The scenes with Susan Sarandon and Catherine Deneuve were really sensual, love the scene where the biting scene segues into someone eating blood rare steak. David Bowie was pretty creepy in decay mode. With Halloween coming up, I have to give this a look again.

"The Hunger" is best known for the stylish love scene, but the plot is excellent and unique in my opinion. I mean who doesn't want to live forever, just not in the way that David Bowie's character was challenged by. Riptide is so right about Bauhaus's "Bela Lugosi is Dead" setting the tone in the opening sequence.

Would have been incredible if Bauhaus singer/Maxwell tape man Peter Murphy actually had a role in the movie as apprentice vampire or something. Maybe the best gaunt, vampiric look I have seen, with the exception of Bowie.

I agree with Bowie. He was the perfect choice for this character. It was like the part was made for him and him only. He brings a special quality to everything he does.

I really liked the scene when he first goes to hospital and you see him aging so fast as they make him wait. This is a very cool, different movie.

I've had this on VHS for years but never got around to watching it....I'll give it a look as Halloween gets closer....I usually start my Halloween marathon on October first, and watch as many horror flicks as I can during the month...I save my favorites for Halloween night.

I saw it when I was 14- I was a huge David Bowie fan at the time, and I begged my parents to let me watch it late at night on cable after they had gone to bed. One of the most memorable scenes was where David Bowie ages 50 years while sitting in a doctor's clinic waiting room! (I know how THAT feels!) I was rather uncomfortable with the lesbian scenes between Catherine DeNeuve and Susan Sarandon. Not my cup of tea.

I remember seeing this on VHS in, oh, 85 or 86 when I was looking for something to rent.

And hating it, and never getting to the end.

But then watching it, for the first time really, sometime in the 90's...and thinking it had the coolest ending ever.....VERY unique for a vampire flick. I loved that ending, it really took the shine off the tired old "sexy" nature of being a vampire. Living Forever...well...not *exactly* [Smile]

I can see your point HeadRusch as being tough to watch as a kid. Especially the bizarre beginning. That must have been weird as a youngster. There are many movies that I remember watching as a kid and not liking, but now, appreciate them. There are also others that I watch now and say to myself, "I used to like this?"

Secret Admirer suggested I watch this and...............I freaking loved it! I can't believe it passed me all these years...........the visuals are stunning....it's a cool creative story....great actors. I want to own it and watch it again for sure. Going into it expecting one thing but I came out with a completely different opinion of it!!

I saved random screenshot forwards off Netflix just to show how artistic every shot is.

My last post on this thread was Sept 2008 saying I had a VHS copy, and planned to watch it. Well...I didn't, and I no longer have the VHS tape. My interest is sparked again, so I'll try to make it a reality this time round!

not sure what happened, but i tried watching this movie a few months ago, and i turned it off after 30 minutes or so.. i just could not get into it. but i know sometimes we tend to not be in the right mood for certain movies and/or we all just have different tastes but i was really excited about seeing this one. maybe i have to give it another shot.

I can see that happening, Ronnie. It is highly stylized and relies heavily on audio and visuals, so it could be boring to someone not into it at the time. Maybe you could give it another try if you ever feel in the mood for an artistic-dark-vampire-sexy-fest. IMO, it's worth the price of admission just for the first 6 mins alone.

Glad you loved it, Muffy! Does this make up for the time I recommended Cool As Ice?

Watched The Hunger today and it was a very good movie.

This Tony Scottīs first feature film has great atmosphere and awesome cast.
Plus a surprisingly steamy scene between Sarandon and Deneuve.

Very stylish movie. Too bad that i didnīt see this back in the 80s.
Would have been even more effective then.
Recommended!

I was flipping thru channels i recognize david bowie, when i started watching the movie and thought it was cheezy. So i kept going thru channels i went back to it by mistake. I felt embarrass when i saw the lesbian scene. I stop watching it. I was 18 yrs old. I try givin it a chance again and didnt like it. I know there is a book, i should give it a chance as well. I heard its better than the book. Who knows maybe in another 10 yrs i ll like it.
