I would say Freddie Bauer in Splash! I loved how inappropriate he was dropping coins on the ground so he could look up skirts and writing in to Playboy! Classic!

Oh there were so many good ones. I think my favorite one would be Summer Rental. He played such a great dad. His sunburn looked really real too. Ouch!

There are many reasons I honestly consider Del the greatest character in the history of film, period. That happens to be one of the biggest ones, the sheer misery he goes through having to drag through life without Marie, and yet still managing to put on a happy face and so convincingly fool everyone he meets (he had me fooled the first time I saw it). It so accurately reflected his own real life struggle with having lost his father so young--to the same heart attack that would later take him, and he knew it was coming the whole time--, and spending the rest of his life searching for that lost something that everyone in the same situation tries to find, and is no doubt why he openly said Del was his favorite character (for the record, Neal is also Martin's avowed favorite). That smile at the end means something, that he knows for once he will in fact be remembered long after his last shower curtain ring falls down (do you suppose it'll be the helium-filled one?), that he's done another human being good and in the process finally found a place to call home (let's face it, there's no way he's leaving Shermer after the holidays after this. He'll fit in very nicely, even if it takes a while). If there were more people like Del out there, the world would be a far happier place. THAT is the Candy mystique, knowing that a little kindness can do wonders for everybody, knowing that he'll be there to offer what he can for you when you're most in need of help(well, maybe not in the case of Burton Mercer or Sheriff Boomer, but nothing's absolute), be it to comfort you after your love life went sour, urge you on to help stop the bad guys, explaining what's really important about the Olympics--and by extension all organized ahtletics--and driving you home through winter blizzards to be with your family for Christmas. Someone out there now, he's still beckoning for us to follow his lead. I say, what are we waiting for? Let's go out and make the world a better place through laughter and tenderness

Chris, you pretty much summed it up for me. Del is absolutely the reason I started watching Candy's movies at such a young age. It is so sad he is gone. I have a 3 Stooges Trivia book and inside the front cover is a picture of Candy dressed like Curly. I love it! I guess my next favorite would be Uncle Buck and then Chet Ripley.

For John Candy's 80s movies, I agree about Planes Trains and Automobiles as well as Splash.
Among his 90s movies, my fave John Candy character (although it was based on a real-life person) was his sleazy attorney Dean Andrews in JFK.

Now if you want to ask which his best there was, I have to go with Johnny LaRue, simply because he's inherently such an anti-Candy with his complete disregard for everyone and everything, making it all the funnier when it inevitably comes back on him (especially whenever he goes to pieces every time Caballero forces him into a cheap production). A close second would be his various times as Divine, for the sheer absurdity of it all.

Believe it or not...
He just may have new material coming out very soon. Apparently, back around 1990 or so, he recorded voiceover work (as a dragon named "Smokestack Sam") for a proposed animated Earth Day special entitled The Magic 7. It was shelved before it could air (April 1997 was the original target date, I'm told), but over the last few years they got around to finish it, and as it is, the project is scheduled for release this coming December 19th (date courtesy of The Official John Candy Website, <www.geocities.com/john_candyman>). So mark your calendars, because as long as they didn't record over him, he's still got more to show us.

Buck Russel in Uncle Buck...I also liked him in Stripes! "I'm leavin here a lean mean fightin machine" That Movie Kills Me! noblprz..again we I agree Hot to trot was HILARIOUS!
