"Popsical" was a term that was coined in the early-to-mid-80s to describe movies like "Flashdance" and "Footloose". Basically, it means movies with extensive music use in montages and dance scenes. This category can also include action movies and comedies.

So what are your favorite "Popsicals" of the *EIGHTIES*? Remember, no 90s movies allowed! [Big Grin] [Wink] [Razz]

Sincerely,

John Kilduff

Do Bomb Pops count? Otherwise my favorite is Grape?

Haha....I was going to say Banana...but I don't think that was what John meant...

Is "Breakin" a popsical??? If so, then that's my Popsical.

Mine would have to be "Fame" (1980).

Or is that more of a traditional musical than a so-called "popsical"?

Posted by rocksteadyflamethrower (Member # 1065) on :

"Breakin'" and "Fame" are both Popsicals. "Breakin'" made extensive use of early rap while "Fame" took advantage of the waning days of disco.

Sincerely,

John Kilduff...

I would pick "True Stories" as my favorite 80s Popsical, but I'm not quite sure where that would lay on the spectrum.

Would have said 'Fame' but I think that 'Xanadu' is definitely up there in the popsical stakes - in fact I think that film may define the term!

Here in Britain, "Popsicle" was part of the title to a series of Porky's style soft porn movies made in Israel

"Lemon Popsicle"
"Private Popsicle"
etc

I would have to say my fave was Hot Bubblegum :Lemon Popsicle 2 (or 3)

How 'bout "Krush Groove"?

Posted by rocksteadyflamethrower (Member # 1065) on :

"Breakin'" and "Krush Groove" definitely count. I actually did the "Krush Groove" page for the Rewind. I love old-school rap music and Sheila E's song "Hollyrock" was totally awesome.

Sincerely,

John Kilduff
