Name movies that had a good cast, but the movie itself wasn't all that great.

The one that first pops into my mind would have to be Con Air.

Great actors in Cusack, Cage, Malkovich, Rhames, Busciemi etc, in my mind couldn't help carry this movie. It was a good action flick and a good escape movie, but all these actors talents were wasted on a pretty stupid and far-fetched plot.

Club Paradise (1986) could fall into this category, packed full of well knowns: Robin Williams, Twiggy, Jimmy Cliff, Peter O'Toole, Rick Moranis, Eugene Levy & Joanna Cassidy, but the film itself misses the mark, however I'd still like a DVD of it as the music Jimmy Cliff adds is great.

Identity-I hated..it had John Cusak, Ray Liotta, and Rebecca DeMornay-all great 80's actors, what happened??

I'll tell you who I think is completely over rated is Julia Roberts...I liked Pretty Woman, Sleeping with the Enemy, and Dying Young, after that, everything she has been in she does that laugh that drives me crazy, and it's annoying. I don't think her acting is that bad, it is just the movies are stupid. I hated Notting Hill, and alot of people like it..I can not stand Hugh Grant, he is so wimpy for a guy, he does nothing for me, there is nothing about him that makes me think heart throb, ick.

I liked Sandra Bullock in While you were Sleeping, but most of the other movies she has been in are dumb too- Hope Floats, The Net..dumb!

One of my favorite movies that I'll w2atch over and over is It Could Happen to You, I love Bridget Fonda in that movie, and Nic Cage, but just about every other movie Nic Cage has been in ..in the past 10 years has sucked...Honeymoon in Vegas, Wild At Heart, ConAir, Face Off-they all sucked.

John Travolta has been said to have remade his career again, and was like a huge box office hit, but I hated all those movies- I wouldn't even go near Pulp Fiction, I didn't like Phenomenum, or Michael, or the last one I saw-Domestic Disturbance-it was awful, the only thing I liked is the house in that movie looked a ton like my house.
My favorite John Travolta movies..are Saturday Night Fever, Urban Cowboy, Grease, and I liked Two of Hearts-I love the song Twist of Fate from that movie.

There has only been 1 movie that Reese Witherspoon has been in that I liked, and that was The Man in the Moon. That Legally Blonde crap, I won't go near that either.

Devolution here,

I didn't like Diner, and everyone is in that, maybe it's just me, I found the movie a little dry.

Oh, and Peggy Sue Got Married. really crappy.

We are DEVO

Julia Roberts and Richard Gere - two actors I can't stand! Pretty Woman? pfff Pretty W...(can't say that here) if you ask me.

2 DVDs I regret buying are High Fidelity and Bridget Jones's Diary, I'd read often from others that they liked the films, bad bad mistake, thankfully I got em cheap 2nd hand and didn't pay shop prices, but I'm still bitter [Wink]

I completely agree with Con Air, sometimes John Malkovich suprises me. I could understand how it might be fun to make, but **** was that a bad movie. I love John Cusack as an actor as well, but I absolutely despised America's Sweethearts. I was just watching The Man in the Moon on Bravo last week and I pretty much agree that it was one of Reese Witherspoons only good ones. I was really looking foward to Diner and it was all very anticlimactic. I experienced a similar feeling when I watched The Age of Innocence, very dull--- it sounded good... Daniel-Day Lewis, Michelle Pfieffer, and oh, not that I think either Cameron Diaz or Leonardo DiCaprio are gem actors, but I was disappointed with Gangs of New York. Mainly because I felt it was a waste for Daniel-Day, John C. Reilly, and Liam Neeson. That's about it for now-- but there are a ton more, I'm sure.

Best Defense (1984) I got this thinking that Eddie Murphy in his prime you can't go wrong, with Dudley Moore. Too bad they couldn't save this stinker.

I bought Diner in the last couple months too, and I thought I had seen so many clips of it, and always heard that whole deal about the popcorn bucket, and I thought it seemed like it would be hilarious. I could not even finish watching it, it was boring, and wasn't even remotely funny.

I am a huge fan of Jill Schoelen, and I got the movie There goes my baby-it had Dermont Mulrooney-I think that was his name, and Rick Schroeder in it-it was awful. I love every other 80's movie Jill was in...The Stepfather, Curse 2, Chiller, Dc Cab, Hot Moves, Rich Girl, Adventures in Spying, Cutting Class, When a stranger calls back, Popcorn was ok.

I hated Letal Weapon 4- isn't that the one with Chris Rock?? UUGh, that was awful.

I know it's not an 80's movie, and therefore people here might dislike it on principal, but Wizard, High Fidelity is one great movie - I have only ever met two others that didn't like it, and they both said that they couldn't associate themslves with any character or situation.

John Cusack was superb in the movie as well.

Just my $0.02....

Are you asking to name only 80's movies that have a great cast, looks promising, but turns out to be a bad movie anyway?

Or can non-80's movies be mentioned here?

If so, there's a few 60's movies that I can name on this list.

Completely forgot before, but Bonfire Of The Vanities - possibly Tom Hanks' only movie bomb; Hudson Hawk - what was Bruce Willis thinking about?; and possibly my personal bug-bear, Being John Malkovich, which despite the presence of Malkovich, Cusack, and the rest, begs only the question - what the **** was all that about?

Any and all movies are welcome. Maybe the admins should open another forum here for topics that don't cover a particular time frame.

Couple that spring to mind;

Falling In Love (1985)
Family Business (1989)

Former with De Niro, Streep & Keitel, latter featuring Connery, Hoffman & Broderick. Both huge disappointments in all honesty.

Well while were at it... Although they're 90's movies and Oscar winners.... I hated ...no Loathed American Beauty(too kinky repressed sex stuff) and Titanic (the big boat sinks, everyone dies who cares All the hype made me gag)

Dreamcatcher had a good cast, but the movie was 100% waste of time. And the new movie Honey I haven't seen yet, but I hear it's a bad movie, even though the cast is a winner. [Roll Eyes]

Sam Hain2 wants to know:

Lots of non-80's movies fit this category!

But if you want to name only 80's movies, I can start off with three examples, the first two I have already recently mentioned on other threads:

(1.) "Harlem Nights", from 1989. Stars Eddie Murphy. He also wrote the script, directed, and produced it too. So, you know this is going to be ego trip. His co-stars included --- and some of them were legends: Richard Pryor (one of Eddie's idols), Redd Foxx, Della Reese, Lela Rochon, Arsenio Hall, Jasmine Guy, Danny Aiello, and Michael Lerner.

Unwatchable, unfunny, and total waste of time. [Mad]

Moreover, this would signal a slow downward slide of Eddie's career. The magic touch that he had earlier in the 80's, was starting to fade, beginning with this film.

(2.) "Clash of the Titans", from 1981. Stars Harry Hamlin, long before the "L.A. Law" series, but he was an unknown then. But this film also starred some legendary actors, including: Sir Laurence Olivier, Maggie Smith, Claire Bloom, Burgess Meredith, Flora Robson, Sian Phillips, and Ursula Andress (who was living with Hamlin at the time).

Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion special effects notwithstanding, this film is a turkey! The actors really had no chance to save this one; they had little to do, but most of the film's budget was spent on their salaries. Now, if only they could come up with a better script...

(3.) "Can't Stop the Music", from 1980. Stars The Village People, so you know that's going to be an early warning sign! But also stars a decent comedy cast: Valerie Perrine, Steve Guttenberg, Paul Sand, Jack Weston, Olympic athlete and wannabe actor Bruce Jenner.

Paul Sand plays this record executive, but the character is very loosely based on the real-life Neil Bogart, who was the president of Casablanca Records (which was The Village People's label).

However, there is one line that Valerie Perrine does say in that movie, and most of you will agree, that goes: "The 70's are dead and gone. The 80's are going to be something wonderfully new and different, and so am I!" [Smile]

I can appreciate "campy trash" movies, but this one is too awful to even reach that level! It was then and is STILL an icky movie!

I'm sure there's more to list, but that's all I can think of right now.

Oh, I KNOW! What was that all about? Thomas Jane (yum!) and mah boy Jason Lee...looked ok in the previews, but then...

What was the whole deal with the dreamcatcher? It's barely referenced and has NOTHING to do with the plot.

Aliens. Pfft!

Oh this is a really good question. It is so hard to run over all of the 80s films that you have that run through your mind. Some of the films that I absolutely love the most, to others may have a sucky storyline and great actors or vice versa.

I do not want to dog myself here. But one of my all time favs that hasn't been talked about much on this site is Making Mr. Right. Yeah it is pretty far fetched. But this was my first introduction to John Malkovich. I thought he was absolutely hilarious. Even though the storyline of the film to some may see far fetched.

A young woman who runs a publicity firm is hired by a robotics company to socialize their latest project Ulysses. He is an android that has human tendencies. Low and behold, Frankie falls in love with Ulysses.

Now I feel that the acting in this film is wonderful. Even though the storyline is far fetched. It is highly entertaining and funny. I don't know how I feel about this film being dissed by some maybe because it seems flighty. I do however love this film.

I guess my point is that you can have a great cast and bad movie, but it still be a perfect movie. Do you kind of understand. It is all a matter of opinion.

Have I confused everyone?

It's not (nor is it meant to be)laugh-out-loud funny but it's constantly entertaining. Can you elaborate about what you mean by "it's boring"?

I think Men's Club (1986) applies to this post. Being a fan of Harvey Keitel and Jennifer Jason Leigh, I was disapointed with this movie. There were other good actors in this like Roy Schneider asd Frank Langella but it just didn'y go anywhere. Also the fact that Jennifer Jason Leigh is on the cover when she has 10 minutes of screen time is an absolute farce. Any other opinions?

Great cast, bad movie? I'm going with "Shining Through" from 1992 with Melanie Griffith, Michael Douglas, Liam Neeson, John Gielgud and Joely Richardson. This movie seemed to have promise, but alas it failed on almost every level and both Griffith and Douglas lack chemistry.

The Big Chill. Loads of 80s thirty-somethings, a smattering of great tunes, but a waste of two hours.

St. Elmo's Fire

It's got like the whole brat pack basically and absolutely sucks.

MARS ATTACKS! (1996)

An outstanding all-star cast and some pretty decent special effects in this one...yet somehow, this movie is still beyond terrible, even for a spoof film.

I would say "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues". Directed by Gus Van Sant coming off of "Drugstore Cowboy" and "My Own Private Idaho" and an all-star cast headed by Uma Thurman. Yet, the film didn't stay close to its source material and almost all of them were completely wasted.
