What do you guys think??? Like being part of it or do you feel it is mainly a negative label??
Plus when was it?? I have read it covers anywhere from 1965 to 1983 but not every one believes it covers all those years...

I think it is interesting. Most of the generations are labeled and all of the info in the labels usually finds its way into the culture. For example, Gen X people are not supposed to be good at finishing anything....interesting...Gen X parents have different aspirations for their children because many of them grew up with 2 working parents....I have seen many of the things that are inferred on Gen X being displayed in peoples' lives.... Good question. I think Generation X is a pretty negative label, and I think it does apply to those who are now in their late 20s, early 30s? We're supposed to have no real interest in anything, taking everything for granted. And we're especially disillusioned with politics, so we take no interest in that either...

I disagree- I think the label is right on the money for most people my age. Everyone is working 2 jobs, to buy stuff, and to have more stuff..there is only so much "stuff" out there...does it really matter??? I have alot of "stuff" myself...but I am home every day with my son, and that is what matters. You can't get time back, you can always have a job later, your kids childhood isn't going to wait for you. Look how fast all of ours went by. Look how fast a person's life is over, look at the obituaries-on the other topic, and look at the list of all the accomplishments those people did, yeah they contributed to things we all knew and loved, but were they happy?? And, they all end up dead, like everyone else, so what does it matter anyway? My favorite saying is "In a Hundred years from now, it will not matter what car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, but that I was important in the life of a child." People are so self absorbed. I see grown men playing videogames all day long, while their kids are running around with no one paying any attention to them. Nobody sits down and eats dinner together anymore. All my girlfriends, none of them even know how to cook, what does that say?

Gen X is, as far as I know, a 90s thing: Nirvana frontman, the late/great Kurt Cobain could've been considered a spokesman for Gen X; the people who were either apathetic to the demands of the politcal/corporate world or just didn't give a f*** about anything as everything was beyond so repair it didn't warrant thinking about...'Reality Bites', 'Waking Life' (anything with Ethan Hawke could be Gen X, 'Fight Club' even 'Friends' or early to mid 90s stuff like 'My So Called Life'...

Never liked that title. I think the label kind of emerged with Richard Linklater's Slacker and Kevin Smith's Clerks movies. I think Smayt mentioned this about Billy Idol's punk band Genereation X, they were great. I always enjoyed it when someone asked Bille Joe of Green Day what he thought of the label Generation X, he said I don't know what any of that means, but I liked their first album a lot. Classic.

I agree with Kash. When the label first came out it meant the young people of the "grunge" era. Those people were look at as slackers, living off of mommy and daddy, smoking and listening to arthouse bands.
I know there were people like that but to clump an entire generation in there is unfair. I know people who are in their late 20s early 30s who were lumped into that group. They work very hard, have college educations and good jobs.
Besides, the label came from some guy who wrote a book called Generaton X. He said he never knew the label would take off the way it did. It seems to me that older people and politicians just understand the music thatwas popular then and the way younger people dressed. So they give them a label and that makes them comfortable.

Well since everyone pretty much thought I was talking about Billy Idol's band I might as well! I love Billy Idol!!! I still think his best performance was in the Wedding Singer though!!! LOL When I was in dance back in the 80's of course we did a jazz number to "mony mony"!!! Still remember some of the moves!!!

Totally agree kash! That was always my interpretation of Gen X. By the way, My So Called Life is my fav of all time shows. Anyone else love it?

Yes, I think Gen. X runs from '61 through '81. We're supposed to be sort of lost. Here is one definition. It seems we have come to be called Xers simply because we represent something negativee to our elders. We may be the one thing that all of the generations who currently precede us have in common. That is--the ability to speak assuredly about our shortcomings. Of course, they overlook the fact theat we are their responsibility, or actually their fault, our generation will be called upon to look after our parents knowing that they failed to look after us. Intergenerational justice failed somewhere along the way and it will be our task to either rectify it or make it worse.
We are a group of individuals who grew up with no one at home after school. It appears we have little hope for the future. No jobs, no homes, and basically no money are almost expected of us. These bleak prospects, along with the fact that we will be forced to support the largest amount of senior citizens ever, do not provide much hope. Some believe that these blockades will be too much for us to handle and we will for the most part fail at life, but many see our individualism and resourcefulness that have been built up through our childhoods as our saviors. We will soon discover who is right and who is wrong.
Check out the definition of Generation Next. lol. They are currently age 14 and younger. They are very materialistic, selfish, and disrespectful. They are very aware of the world and very technologically literate. They are trying to grow-up too fast, and have no good role models to look towards.
