I know alot of you guys on the board like 80's music, so I thought this might be of interest to you. If you get a chance, check out the new No Doubt song. It's a cover of Talk Talk's "It's My Life." I love it. What do you think? [Big Grin]

I heard it on the radio the other day. I loved Talk Talk and that song is really good.

I never usually like cover versions and I have to say this one is pretty poor.

this went on in the car the other day and me and my friend had a fight. He wouldnt believe it was a re-make. Im screamin "TALK TALK!!!!" at him.Now Im tryin to download it for him. non-believer.

Devolution here,

Sorry Cindy, I don't agree, I have had this talk with my girlfriend dozens of times, and we both feel that if you are going to "remake" a song, then it should at least sound different. Like Blinded by the Light or something like that. All it is therefore as you said is a cover, I don't consider it a good thing, No Doubt is talented all by themselves, they don't need to play someone elses songs.

How about that cover version of Don Henley's "Boys of Summer" - ugh. How dare they!!

spyke what are you talkin about? I thought the Ataris pulled it off beautifully.

Tootles! [Wink]

Devolution here,

I agree with Spyke, I don't think that it has the same passion as the original. It's just a lot of rockin. Not that rockin is bad, but it's not the same.

Well I don't know about covers of 80's songs but I do love 80's covers of 60's songs. I never knew that Tiffany's "I think we're alone now" was a remake and after finding out [Big Grin] I still like Tiffany's version... But as for new covers I feel the original is still the best but I will say that I like new found glory's version of "Glory of Love" but I will have Peter Cetrea's version playing at my wedding though....

I am very sorry, but song remakes are a sore spot with me. I dont know who remade it, but one of my all time favorite songs was trashed to bits, "take on me" by A-ha. I still listen to Aha to this very day and have their new album "lifelines", the remake was definitely different if that was what they were going for. Also, who told Sixpence none the richer they could ruin "Dont Dream its Over" by Crowded House? I dont even listen to the radio anymore. Everytime I do, I hear something that breaks my heart and I have to turn it off..

Posted by TresFoxy (Member # 542) on :

Reel Big Fish did the re ~ make of Take on Me which I really liked but I like Ska so I guess it is ones own opinion of course.Still, I must agree that Sixpence None the Richer version of "Don't Dream it's over" is absolutely terrible!!!! I must change the station when that version is on!!!! [Mad]

I agree, no covers for me.
How about Celine Dione’s version of ‘I Drove All Night’. Come on, get out of here… [Eek!]
It’s just like with movies, leave the originals alone! [Mad]

I just heard the 'It's My Life' Cover on the radio 5 minutes ago.
Sorry for the ones that DO like it, but I have only 3 words:

... "Such a Shame"

Posted by spyke65 (Member # 1746) on :

And I forgot to mention - Britney Spears should be shot for covering Joan Jett's "I Love Rock n Roll" - sacriledge!! [Mad]

Posted by Devolution (Member # 1731) on :

Devolution here,

Like I said, the only remake that is better than the original is Blinded by the Light by Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Sorry for you Bruce Springsteen Purists out there but his version rots.

We are DEVO

I agree that Britney should be shot for doing "I Love Rock & Roll" did you know she thought it was a Pat Benatar song? what a friggin fool. If Britney Spears loves Rock & Roll why is she singin bubble gum sh*t???? whatta poser!!!

Are you sure your not thinking of Cindi Lauper? I dont remember Celine Dion doing "I Drove All Night".

I actually liked Laupers version but then she has a really good voice.

Posted by TKO (Member # 1471) on :

Yeah, I’m sure, I have the original Cyndi Lauper song 'I Drove All Night' on CD. ( which I like ) [Wink]
The 'raped' version of 'scream queen' Celine Dion I heard a few times on the radio.

Posted by deathbystereo80 (Member # 2005) on :

Oh God, that Celine Dion screecherama version of "I drove all night" is driving me up the walls...

I agree with all of you - remakes should be prohibited!!
Maybe it's even worse here in Europe than in the US - or did any of you ever hear the awful technosized remake of "It's tricky"?!? Or "Like a prayer"??? [Eek!]
And what's really sad is that kids nowadays listen to these and have no idea that it's actually a remake and that the original is soooooo much better!
[Mad]

Oh man, this was not the reaction I had hoped for [Frown] . Well, as much as I agree with most of you that alot of remakes are a travesty, I will stand behind my original statement. I guess it's because I'm such a huge No Doubt fan. Don't hate me... [Frown]

I haven't heard No Doubt's version yet cindy. I guess I need to listen to the radio more, I'm more of a CD person. I rarely like any remake of any song. I'm picky when it comes to music and I hate most of the bands that exist today. I think the only remake I like is Metallica's cover of Die My Darling which was originaly a Misfits song. I love The Misfits and I thought Metallica did the song well.

i hate the new 'it's my life.' gosh her voice is irritating to listen to (for me). [Roll Eyes]

Oh no, now I feel bad for making you post a [Frown] !
[Frown] myself.
Who would ever hate you? And besides, you're right - No Doubt is great! [Smile]

Dont worry about it. I mean thats what these boards are for right? Everyone has an opinion about what they like or dislike, so its no thang. [Smile] I need to learn alot more about music and the 80's than what I already do, so there are a lot of songs that are probably remakes that I dont even know about.

something to cheer up the folks a wee bit:

I listened to Big in Japan on the way to work this morning for about 30 minutes straight, I just put it on loop in my cd player and sat back. That happens sometimes, I just hear a song in my head and I have to listen to it. Its the only song I have by Alphaville and now I want the entire album. Its on my wishlist of course. [Big Grin]

Posted by deathbystereo80 (Member # 2005) on :

OMG, Big in Japan left Germany and made it all the way to the US???!!! I never knew! [Smile]
I love that song! Do you know their song "Forever young", too? Wow, I'm still amazed! [Big Grin]

To TKO, DeathByStereo80, and Fancy Molly Ringwald:

Cyndi Lauper did sing that "I Drove All Night" song, but Roy Oribson actually sang it first. His version appears on his "Mystery Girl" CD, which came out shortly after his death. But both of their versions are great!

Also, both of their versions are much more preferable than Celine Dion's version!
[Mad]

Well Cindy, I finally heard the No Doubt version of It's My Life. I must admit that I liked it, allot. I think they did a good job. I happen to like No Doubt anyway, met them back in 97 at a concert in Milwaukee.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that it's a rare thing for me to like cover songs, but I did enjoy this one. [Smile]

Hey deathbystereo and Ali...thanks for the love. I feel much better now...lol [Razz] .

So Ali, you met No Doubt? How were they? Nice?

Hey Steven, 'I drove all Night' by Cyndi Lauper came from the album 'A Night To Remember' 1989.
The version of Roy Orbison indeed came from his album 'Mystery Girl' but that was 1992.
You could still be right though, I don't know. But this is what I read on cyndilauper.com:

'I Drove All Night' notes

Cyndi said the song was written for Roy Orbison (who later recorded it), but he turned it down at that point. She wanted to do it because she liked the idea "of a woman driving, of a woman in control." She said she liked the unique concept.

Yeah, Mariah Carey did cover Def Leppard's "Bringing on the Heartbreak" on her last album. I actually saw the video for it once on VH-1.

Posted by Rose (Member # 2033) on :

I saw the video for Big in Japan and had to have the song, so I downloaded it off of the internet. I am going to buy the album forever young soon, I want to hear more of Alphaville. I like Aztec Camera as well.

Cindy- they were really great! They were so nice to me, they gave me free cds and autographs! It was so much fun, we hung out with them for like an hour.

I saw the No Doubt video as well, not sure what to make of it. I heard they are releasing a whole album of covers. There's not many covers that I enjoy. Orgy's cover of New Order's Blue Monday was heavier than the original, but the original is so perfect it's hard to see why anyone else would attempt to cover it. Frente covered Bizarre Love Triangle, but did it differently with acoustic, which was nice. I liked the Cowboy Junkies version of Sweet Jane, made it their song. Would love to hear their version of the Cure's Seventeen Seconds as well. I think Sinead O'connor's version of Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U was better than the original.

huge no doubt fan here too. i actually really liked the cover. i can't stop listening to it.
about them releasing a bunch of covers, not totally positive but someone mentioned it on one of their message boards and i think it was just a rumor that was started. they are releasing a box set with alot of live stuff, singles and music videos but no covers.
can't stand celine dion so i felt quite sick when i heard her cover of i drove all night. ugh.

What about Marilyn Manson and his cover of Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams"? Another one that should be shot for that!

Altho there is a club mix of "Sweet Dreams" out there that was done in 1996 by a club band (I forgot the name) and it sounded pretty good!

Posted by Rose (Member # 2033) on :

DJ Scott featuring Lorna B did a remake of Sweet Dreams and so did a group called C&A

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

I have a version of Sweet Dreams done by Miss kittina nd the Hacker on a compilation. Their debut album has a great 80's sound.

Eh,... I have to admit that it is about the only cover song I like. [Embarrassed] [Smile] In fact it's the only MM song I like...
I liked the original 'Eutythmics version' better, but then again, I try to look at them as two different songs.

I don't like Marilyn Manson or any of their remakes. I think their cover of Tainted Love is the worst!

Yes Ali, your right again...That manson version is bad, to be honest the original isn`t a great song anyway!.

and what's REALLY funny is that Soft Cell covered that song, they did not write it. A lady during the 60's wrote it. I will try to remember her name....Carolyn somebody....

Devo wrote.....

You've obvoiusly never heard our version of Crazy Horses then.... [Big Grin]

As a drummer in an unashamed 'covers' band, some stuff is fun to do, and some stuff should be left well alone. Much of the 80s introduced an element of 'processing' to songs, so that they are actually very tough to play live and do justice to. We have to be very careful about the songs we cover, and those we do choose (like 'Dont Dream Its Over' and 'Love Shack', for example) we try to get as close to the original as we can, so that people recognise the elements of the original.

What I really hate is covers that make you hear the original, and the actual song sounds nothing like what you remember. Still, it's all fun to do. To see what we have decided to cover, take a look at our set list at The EOS Website.

Laters (still at work at 7:18pm [Frown] )

I thought I heard that somewhere Jaymi. Let me know if you remember her name cuz I'm curious now!

As for the Soft Cell's version, I'm kinda sick of it because it's played so much on the radio here during retro lunch and 80s at 8.

I like it best when the long version is played at this 80s club I go to. The whole place gets up and sings together. It reminds me of a scene taken right out of an 80s flick. Now if I could get everybody to do the same dance..... [Big Grin]

I finally heard this song, I guess I don't get out much...cause I rarely listen to the radio, except when driving somewhere, and I guess I actually lucked out, cause I wasn't missing anything-as usual. Nobody can come up with anything new, so they heard a great song, that they know alot of kids now have never heard and they hurried up and did the exact same thing, and made a million dollars off it. Don't they deserve it- "no doubt"! Not!

Posted by isis9968 (Member # 1780) on :

Oh man...I just saw this video this morning for the first time...it was awful. It was so dumb, and just thrown together, without any reasoning, and the guy in the tub with toaster, and her and the fake tears, ick! That was dumb.

I thought No Doubt's cover was pretty good. And I have to say that Gwen Stefani is mad hot in my opinion. It isn't very often that a song comes out these days that I like. I'm not into rap or death metal and all that. I am glad that Al Green released a new CD. He's my fav singer. I also enjoy the new Matchbox 20 cd alot.
