I was wondering what phrases or words everyone used in the 80s. I know allot of people said "dude" and after Valley Girl came out we all said "like" among other things. But is there anything interesting that you used to say that might not be as well known as the ones I just said?

I used to talk like a surfer/stoner (which is what I was). Not as bad as spicoli, which was actually my nickname in college.
When a girl was good looking, we would say..."Damn! That girl is FINE!"

Devolution here,

I just remember saying "Mint" and "Fresh" a lot.

We are DEVO

Since I live in North Dakota we all talked like the people in the movie "Fargo"; until we finally got electricity in 1984 and we could start watching TV and movies. [Wink]

My vocabulary pretty much consisted of blanky, binki, baba, and gaga [Big Grin]

Haha River! Thats so cute, I forget that your younger than most of us here. Let me tell you that you have great taste in all things 80s! You might not remember much from that time but it's great that you like them so much!

Thanx for the kind words Ali! I only wish that more people my age could appreciate such a fab decade!

The word totally was used a lot. In junior high, hoser was said a lot, could be a Canada or Strange Brew thing. Dork and dweeb were used a lot more than know as well.

You can't forget the infamous words "I know you are but what am I" [Roll Eyes] Yes I was a Pee Wee fan I wonder if Morphious changed after realizing he was playing Cow Boy Curtis, ha ha just kidding.

Well growing up in 80s Southern California we had a well known vencular. Of course "dude" and "man", "gnarly", a weird one was "waste", which meant cool for some reason. If something was digusting it was "Ohhhh sick!". But of course the king of them all: "Rad!"

Anyone remember "Hot Mama" or "flip a bitch" (make a U turn) or even Baters.

Posted by RiverPhoenix4life (Member # 1719) on :

kenkobra,

My two favorite phrases of the present just happen to be Flip a bitch and right on!

Tootles! [Wink]

I forgot one. Remember how every thing was "BAD" meaning good or cool.

Posted by Ronnie (Member # 465) on :

yep, BAD was the word. plus, fresh and radical.

Posted by isis9968 (Member # 1780) on :

No RAD was the word! haha. My brother had his own language..I'll have to try and remember it, it was so hilarious, everyone was a Boner, and not like they mean now, and he called a mountain dew a dewslam, and had words for everything. He used to change the message on our answering machine each week, it was funny.

I remember always calling someone a sped, or a scrub.

We used the: hey, you hosehead lingo also. Like take-off, eeh.

I'd just like to say that I am a regular user of the words YO and DUDE and of course COOL .I am also rather partial to the phrase THAT IS COOL AND THE GANG ,I believe I have Mr.Tarantino to thank for that one.
LATER DUDES ,see..! I just can't help it. [Razz]

Another one I just remembered is "poser", which I still have no idea what it is. Posers and hosers, no clue 20 years later heh heh.

Posted by Jaymi (Member # 1434) on :

A poser is someone who was trying to be something they were not. That term was used to describe a lot of the 80's metal hair bands...They were "posers" because they looked like girls, (or so some people said!!) The most common one I heard use to describe someone they did not like was F*G..or dork...I hear teens using that one now and have to chuckle because I don't think half of them know what it means...

I cleaned out our ferret's cage earlier, and I heard the words "gag me with a spoon!" come out of my mouth!!! I think being on here, has had quite an effect on me.

Ha ha that's funny! Remember that song Frank Zappa and his daughter did called Valley Girl? I think it came out around the same time s the movie. If I'm correct I think it was sort of a parody of VG. Anyway, that would be an interesting phrase to brng back, wouldn't it?

This is sad to say, but my friends and I used terminology from the movie "Top Gun". You name it we lived it, well except for the 30 million dollar plane. [Cool] We were 21 years old and substituted our cars for planes and meeting new people was our mission. It's cheesy NOW, but back in 1986 & 1987 "Top Gun" was consider cool.

"I feel the need for SPEED!"
"She's lost that lovin' feeling"
"Son your ego's writing checks your body can't cash"
"Relax about the Mig"
"I'll hit the brakes and he'll fly right by"
"Have you figured it out yet? ... Who's the best pilot?"

The good news is I didn't kill my "wingman", but we were close a few times. [Eek!]

I was a little prepubescent punk rock delinquent in the mid to late eighties so I said the F-word quite a bit.

The characters I could identify myself with were Chris Chambers in Stand By Me, John Bender in The Breakfast Club (a junior high version, anyway) all the TR kids in Suburbia, and the greasers in The Outsiders.

So yeah, maybe a "dude" here and there, but I just pretty much had a potty mouth. I would quote alot of my favorite movies too.

Gary (Hall) in Weird Science had alotta lines I liked to quote.

Well, Cos im a Londoner i probably have completely different e.g If something was good it was 'REEM',
If something was bad it was 'SWAG',
If something was moody (not real) it was 'JEKYLL' (jekyll & hyde= Snide)

And if someone was being thick they were called a 'PLUM'.

I remember these words being around when i was little, dont hear them much any more.

I like those words! Now I can say them to my friends and they won't know what I'm talking about!

It varied from year to year. Dude, rad, fresh, totally, cool, whats up, barf, gross, bogus, and others. My friends and I used to just play with words and make up stuff like beez play, or uck fay oo yay, and other weird kid stuff. [Big Grin]

Posted by Ali_with_an_i (Member # 27) on :

I still say bogus! My friends always make fun of me but I just can't help it. It just comes out of my mouth whenever I'm angry. I used to make fun of my Hippie uncle for saying "groovy" all the time. I guess things never change.

Mikie-that is pig latin.

Does anyone else remember talking pig latin? We did it in grade school. We also would write notes to each other, and made code keys up, and then you could pass secret notes to each other, and if someone else got them ,t ehy wouldn't be able to read them. We also would call each other by our name spelled backwards, some people had hilarious names that way.

I always still say "Like, you know" all the time, and I say duh! alot...

Here are some new ones as well as corrections of others above.

Poser: Someone who who pretended to be a skater
but mostly carried their board around to
look cool. They could be spotted because
their boards weren't dinged up.

Gnarly: Somethin' that was cool. As in "That
Chevy Nova is totally Gnarly."

Bitchin: See Gnarly.

Bogart: To hog something or not share. As in
Dude! don't bogart the bong."

Skank: Gross or ugly. As in "That chick is a
total skank."

Smegma: also used as smeg or smeghead.
A cheesey substance that develops on
on uncircumcised men's privates
when they do not bathe regularly.
It's was pretty bad to be called that.

Wannabe: Basically a poser but usually associated
with someone who was trying to cross
racial lines. A white guy trying to be
black or mexican. "That dude is a total
wannabe."

Heinous: Hard or difficult. As in "That math
test was totally heinous."

Tripindicular: Very, very, very cool! "That new
video game is totally tripindicular."

I'll add more if I can think of any.

Heatmeiser

Just tonight i got a dose of the new language. My brothers hockey team for example, some of them were saying yo, that's sick. I guess sick has replaced gnarly or radical. Times change.

Posted by Missie (Member # 2186) on :

Yeah, I have a friend who uses sick to describe stuff, too. Like, he would say, "The guy probably makes sick money doing that" or he will also say someone has a "grip" meaning a lot of something, as in a "grip" o' cash.

I think my kid phrases, some of which I still use, were mostly covered here already, except a few. If someone got proven wrong on something, we would say they got "moded" or "faced" I have no idea where it came from. And we called skanky girls "skaggs". Again, no clue.

And we talked, like, a thousand miles an hour. And I used to start every sentence with the word "okay". It used to drive my dad nuts! He locked me in my room with him and wouldn't let me out until I started a sentence without saying "okay" first. It was hard! I was in there with him for like, two hours!

Missie
