OK, so we all know that in the movie, John Bender (Judd Nelson) crawls through the ceiling space, telling himself a joke:

Naked blonde walks into a bar with a poodle under one arm, and a two-foot salami under the other. The bartender says, I guess you won't be needing a drink. Naked lady says--

Then falls through the ceiling, and we never get the punchline!

My question - what do YOU think the punchline was?

i read somewhere (maybe on IMDB) that there was no punchline, Nelson just improv'd the joke on the spot, and so it was never a proper joke, just a small slice of genius from Judd.

Apparently not - although he did change the way that they were delivered. John Hughes saw the role as much less serious, and wanted Judd Nelso to play it that way. The intent was to make Bender's tales of his home life, and thecigar burn, all a joke, playing for attention. Judd Nelson disagreed, saying that it would have more impact if it were played for real. After some heated discussions that nearly got Nelson Fired a couple of times, Hughes came round to appreciating Nelson's thoughts, and the rest is cinema history!

I watched this film for the first time a little while ago, great film!

I remember watching that scene and waiting for Judd to tell and funny joke, but unfortunately I never heard one.

I recently brought a book about all the movies John Hughes did, great book by the way, and it mentioned something about the joke Judd Nelson was supposed to say.

Apparently, there was no punchline, Judd made the joke up on the spot, he ad-libbed it.

I wish there was a punchline though!

Despite there perhaps being no punchline what theories have people got of why the bartender assumes that lady wouldn't need a drink? I know there is probably no actual reason but I always think about it for some reason.

I have no idea what the punchline could be, it could be anything, or there just is none.

But, maybe the bartender thinks the lady doesn't want a drink because...

I'm really trying to come up with one but I'm failing miserably.

I try to break this down

1. When someone goes into a bar for a drink they usually are either thirsty or they want a stiff one to relax.

2. The bartender thinks that the two foot salami and/or the poodle can somehow quench her thirst and/or help her relax.

This makes zero sense really but I am convinced that Judd Nelson's thought process behind the joke was a bit twisted.

Blonde says, "why is that?"

Bartender says, "Because you have a stiff one and a licker (liquor) already."

That's not bad!
