1. Bill Murray, best overall actor, best movie choices/roles, Oscar nomination, the superstar from SNL.
2. John Belushi, obviously very talented even with the short career.
3. Gilda Radner, most talented female performer, who, sadly, never found great success in movies.
4. Eddie Murphy, terrible, terrible movie choices of late, but let's not forget that he had a string of great roles/hits in the 80s and a later, well-deserved Oscar nomination.
5. Dan Aykroyd, see Murphy, above, perhaps the best sketch comedian ever (also probably why he never had tremendous success in feature-length films).
Will Farrell, Chevy Chase, Jimmy Fallon, Mike Myers, Phil Hartman, and Tina Fey would all be honorable mentions. Martin Short is disqualified because I've always thought of him as an SCTV guy. Billy Crystal was pretty much a success even before SNL.

1. Dan Aykroyd - i agree with crash, outside of that you could team aykroyd up with nearly anyone and get good results, great writer
2. Eddie Murphy - one of the funniest, great catalog of movies, one good movie away from being back on top today
3. Chris Farley - this guy i think was the funniest person ever on the show, had he not had drug issues, he would have owned comedy in the 2000's
4. Bill Murray - i agree one of the best actors, good catalog of movie roles, great ad lib/improv that has improved many scenes.
5. Chevy Chase - probably one of the most quoted people in movies, just from caddyshack and fletch alone, not even mentioning the vacation films

GP, you are dead right about Murphy. He seems to be "just one away" from being big again. The trouble is, the ones that he does keep getting worse and worse.
I'm glad to see that you are a big Akyroyd fan too. When he's on his game, he's just amazing. Look at "Dr. Detroit," a screenplay that isn't particularly great--very cliched and sitcomy--and has lots of problems. But Aykroyd is so energetic and funny, he singlehandedly--because no one else is even close to his level--elevates the film into a small gem. Another good example is his one-scene cameo in "Canadian Bacon." Again, he takes ordinary material and really makes it work. And one of the rare times he did a straight part, "Driving Miss Daisy," he's so good that he got an Oscar nomination. (If you need someone to do a Southern accent, Dan's the man!)
I am torn about Farley. Yes, he was very, very funny. (I do a Matt Foley, motivational speaker, impression to this day that still gets laughs.) But his tragic end left us with a very small body of work with which to speculate. (And no one's ever going to claim "Beverly Hills Ninja" put him on the road to movie stardom.)
Chase, though quite possibly one of the biggest jerks around, is great. While he was terrific in "Fletch," "Caddyshack," and "Foul Play" (I love his excellent timing of those little lines that he throws away--Ryan Reynolds does kind of the same thing today, see "Just Friends," for example), he's not Aykroyd, an absolute master mimic, chameleon, and writer.

So I guess I would just have to agree with Good Package.
Though Chris Farly didn't go on to have a lot of good movies based on his time on SNL alone he was a heavy hitter. Always every segment he was getting other cast members to chuckle, even on unfunny segments he was funny.
Like Eddie Murphy, someone who would also break character or ad lib funny stuff when the material wasn't there. It'd be a dumb segment and then Farly would show up pour milk down his front and others on set would supress chuckles. Murphy would mess up a dialoge and then say to the audience "Yeah I messed up, so what?"
Chevy Chase was always good, the pratt falls and the fumbling for stuff with his hands. As well as his great lines.
Murray I thought was better in movies after he got a little older in the eighties.
Aykroyd I think is an unsung hero, movies like Neighbors a greatly overlooked fantastic comedy which was probably only banished because he and Belushi switched roles, Everyone else seems to think it was a mistake I thought it was brilliant and allouded each of theme to show case their talents playing agianst type. Doctor Detroit another fav, as well as Ghostbusters and Trading Places both of which his brainchilds. Great Outdoors, Dragnet works well with others maybe an understatment.

I can't make my own top five because I have never been a regular viewer of SNL. I have watched a handful of episodes over the past 20 years. I think it is painfully horrible now. Anyhoo, my two cents. Crash- I said the same thing about Ryan Reynolds years ago- he has that Chevy Chase from the 80's quality. Good looking and smarmy at the same time. I also hope Eddie Murphy gets some good movie roles again. I thought he was great in Tower Heist. And my husband and I still crack up to this day when we see a Chris Farley skit. He was not a good sketch writer, but he was great working with what he was given.

My top 5.
1) Eddie Murphy - mega star
2) Mike Myers - Great at both, he translated well on the big screen.
3) Will Ferrell / Chevy Chase - Luke / Obi-wan You know I never realized it until earlier this thread, but Chase has the most quoted characters of the 80's and Ferrell in the 2000's. They are a tie for me.
4) Talent wise - Belushi over Hartman Reality wise it's Hartman- how many movies do I forget that Hartman is in? He never has a bad movie cameo.
5) Tina Fey - it's not close. She loves being awkward and she's the head writer. She also hasn't been in a bad movie yet. Does anyone notice her cameo in Beer League? Does anyone else quote that movie like I do?

1. Eddie Murphy - No doubt one of the funniest of the bunch with one of the most successful movie careers to follow.
2. Bill Murray/Dan Aykroyd - I can't decide who I liked better of these two, so they both share the #2 spot on my list.
3. Adam Sandler - Probably my personal favorite of the SNL bunch. Can't recall a single segment he was in that didn't make me chuckle.
4. Molly Shannon - Though I didn't watch SNL much in the 90's, (was more of an "In Living Color" fan). Shannon's outrageous performances were always highlights whenever I did.
5. Dana Carvey - Always prefered the Garth character over Wayne. So he beats out Mike Myers on my list.

Tough call here with so many terrific choices, the best of whom have proved themselves just as good dramatically as humorously. If I had to put it do in writing, I'd have to go:
1. Chevy (even with several rough stretches, he never stops hitting home runs even in subpar material)
2. Murray (just as quotable, with arguably one of the 10 best cinematic comedy characters to his credit in Venkman, possibly even 5 best)
3. Farley (pure manic humor unleashed; for what is to his record, he scored each time (and for me that includes Beverly Hills Ninja, which I found to be a riot from the first time I watched it))
4. Belushi (same formula as he idolizer, perhaps a little more subtly done, but there was sheer brilliance in everything he did)
5. Murphy (while as noted he's slipped lately apart from the times he voices the Donkey--making it perhaps a better thing in a way the 2 above him had shorter careers and thus avoided a long, slow decline like thus--there was no denying he was at the top of the world at his peak when he was sticking bananas in tailpipes and traveling around Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood)

1. Goldfinger - great opening sequence, great theme song, iconic villian, probably the most iconic henchman in oddjob, great plot involving Ft. Knox
2. From Russia With Love - good opening, great story line, robert shaw as red grant one of the best villains, good henchwoman in rosa klebb, tatianna romanova one of the most attractive bond girls
3. Goldeneye - one of the best opening scenes in the series, great plot, especially the idea of 006 turning rogue and played well by sean bean, great henchwoman in xenia onatopp, natalya simonova another very attractive bond girl good charisma, great theme song by tina turner
4. License to Kill - great opening scene with the mid air capture of sanchez, Franz Sanchez one the best villains, del toro does a good as a henchman, excellent story line with 007 going rogue, the best opening theme song sung by gladys knight, only draw back is the semi poping a wheelie
5. The Living Daylights - good opening, great theme song, maryam d'abo was good in it, liked the detective work story, this one really seemed alot like espionage than most others, great scene with the cargo plane

If I were going to do a James Bond top five I would have to break everything down into a top fives by themselves, such as Openings, Credits and Music, Best action sequences, The Bond Women, The top Villains, The Henchman, and Gadgets.
But overall in no paticular order.
1. From Russia With Love - Red Grant awesome
2. Goldfinger - Odd Job and Goldfinger a good bad guy combo, liked the plot.
3. Liscense To Kill - Probably my favorite. Thought I like all of them excluding Craig of coarse, I assume this is the real Bond board? Not the hey let's copy off Jason Bourne a copy of our franchise which as been going strong for fifty years, that is until Mr. Craig dawned the colors and sank the series and MGM along with it.
4. Die Another Day - I thought this was a good one, shame it was Brosnan's last. Liked the opposite style opening with Bond losing instead of the normal victory.
5. Goldeneye - The trio of bad guys, the plot, the rogue double O agent. It's a good one.
Though I like Moore's movies I didn't care for Moore he seemed a bit too old and dainty to potray the grunt half of Bond and too old to be believable as ladies man. Looks like he's wearing a wig, and a stunt man comes in for everything even to tie his shoe. I can't help wonder what it might have been like should Connery have stayed around a little longer and Dalton stepped in a little sooner.

Man is Roger Moore getting a bad rap here.
Myself I think he is the best Bond. I know what everyone might say about him but I like him personally because I think he has more wit than the other Bonds. Some of his lines crack me up.
movies like Octopussy and Live and Let Die are some of the best bond movies ever.

3. the living Daylights (I like Dalton too and i saw this at the movies so it holds a special place for me.

i got to say that westerns were the first movies that i found very educational in the study of human nature. through this format i got a good appreciation for storytelling and performace, and realized there is alot more depth to it.
1. The Missouri Breaks - this movie relates to the paragraph above, brando and nicholson, both great characters
2. Tombstone - great story, kind of like a epic, but trimmed down so there is no dull spots, kilmer is awesome in this, russell does great, great villains
3. The Good, The Bad, The Ugly - awesome visuals, really great story, three scoundrels in the pursuit of gold, high entertainment and no need for a complex plot
4. Quigley Down Under - great story, great character, great story, great leading lady
5. Posse (1975) - great story, douglas and dern do really good work

It's too hard for me to pick only 5 westerns, but i'm a sucker for euro westerns, so some titles that would definitely be on my list are Django, Keoma and The Great Silence which takes place in snowy landscapes, has a mute as the lead character and the most depressing ending you'll ever see.. Oh, and Klaus Kinski is in it too ! Really great stuff !
Not too long ago i purchased the book Any Gun Can Play ; The Complete Guide to Euro-Westerns. It's really good, with lots of vintage artwork too !

Yeah, that alternate ending is exactly the opposite of the original one. It makes for a different viewing experience and completely lacks the impact of the original cut.

From the 80s, there's also Suspect (1987, starring Cher, Dennis Quaid and Liam Neeson) and The Accused (1988, starring Kelly McGillis and Jodie Foster, who won an Oscar for this one).
Nowhere near as good as 12 Angry Men.. but they deserve to be mentioned nonetheless.

I have collected most of the John Carpenter soundtracks, only missing The Fog, and Christine. And the Thing, even though that was Ennio Morricone.
It may just be me there Good Package but, I would think that theme would be seperate from song off soundtrack, otherwise it might be even harder to narrow down. I'm having enough trouble just picking out best themes, I almost want to do it by genera instead.

I saw a little clip of The Silent Parnter on Terror in the Aisles and thought what is this. That movie was great for turning me onto other movies, plus I like Donald Pleasance.

I'm really not sure what I think of Cage overall...but I must say, I really enjoy him in Family Man. Solid movie. Like the Rock, Raising AZ, Gone in 60 sec.... after that not quite sure.

I agree with you. I, too, wanted to like Trapped in Paradise. The writer-director wrote Midnight Run, which is such a small gem. I liked the cast: Cage, Lovitz, Carvey, and the enchanting Madchen Amick. And it was filmed in one of the loveliest places around: Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario (substituting for Paradise, Pennsylvania, a real place), a simply beautiful little town on Lake Erie. But...the truth is, everything falls flat. I think that I only laughed once, right at the beginning when Lovitz is trying to snow the parole board by explaining that he is going to live his life on parole like the mighty pterodactyl, soaring high above his problems, "Ack. Ack. Ack." That was genuinely hilarious, but the rest of the film is not. Dana Carvey is particularly annoying as the real idiot brother.
