The best buddy cop duo is a buddy cop trio.
Eddie Murphy, Judge Reinhold and John Ashton, in Beverly Hills Cop.
Second best is Danny Glover and Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon, and for me, third is Dan Ackroyd and Tom Hanks in Dragnet.

Gary Graham and Eric Pierpoint in the Alien Nation TV show They are fabulous together.
I love Caan in the film, but Patinkin isn't a patch on Pierpoint.

Judge Reinhold & John Ashton in Beverly Hills Cop. I know, they were officially a trio when you add Eddie Murphy. But I think Reinhold & Ashton were funny enough together in the scenes with just the two of them without Murphy. So that's why they're my pick.

This topic makes me think about the one movie in the cop / buddy genre that i never got to see..
Number One with a Bullet (1987)
starring Robert Carradine and Billy Dee Williams. It's a bit difficult to find nowadays, and has never been given a dvd-release (as far as i know).
