My daughter has suddenly become obsessed with BATMAN (and Robin too cuz she sayshe is cuter than Batman!) so I just bought all the Old School movies (but not the Adam West BATMAN) I bought the ones with Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer and George Clooney and a disc that had both the animated MASK OF THE PHANTASM and SUB ZERO ON THEM.
I did not like the two last "new" BATMAN movies. I know people disagree with me, but I likes what I was raised on . hahaha!

So lets talk about BATMAN. Which movies were the best? Which movies were the worst? Which villains? Which actors were the best BATMAN? Any casting choices you loved? Hated?

I like Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992) movies.
Batman Forever (1995) was so-so and Batman & Robin (1997) was awful.

I´ve had Batman Begins (2005) dvd for 3 years but still haven´t watched it.
I don´t know why. I´m very slow when it comes to 00s flicks.
Don´t even ask about The Dark Knight (2008) [Big Grin]

Mask of the Phantasm is awesome.
And i love the animated tv-series (1992-95)
especially the first season.

I´ve read tons of Batman comics and still own
lots of books.

So, who´s the best Batman?
I´ll have to take a rain check and get back after i´ve seen those Bale versions.

I never really liked any of the Batman movies. Batman Begins was kind of watchable. Never saw The Dark Knight.

Not Adam West?...did I read that right? NOT Adam West (I'm doing an Adam West impression now). Adam West is the king, he is to Batman what Bill Shatner is to Star Trek.

FAVOURITE BATMAN MOVIES

1) Batman Begins
2) Batman Forever (kudos to Kilmer, still the best Bruce Wayne)
3) Dark Knight
4) Batman (1989)
5) Batman: The Movie (1965)
6) Batman Returns
7) Gotham Knight (animated)
8) Batman & Robin

Val Kilmer was superb in Batman Forever' and the movie struck the right balance between action and humour, the fact they made Robin work as a convincing character was a big achievement.

Michael Keaton and Christian Bale both bought an intensity to the role.

Everything that could've gone wrong in 'Batman Forever' went wrong in 'Batman & Robin'. Arnie was terrible as Mr Freeze, ruining an already awful movie, though Uma Thurman tried to salvage the wreck with her wicked Posion Ivy. Batman Begins was awesome and though they tweaked the origins a bit, its true to the comics in almost every way imaginable.

Batman Returns is my fave superhero film followed by The Dark Knight. Michael Keaton IS Bruce Wayne, so there [Razz] I didn't actually think Christian Bale was all that great in Batman Begins but thought his performance was just fab in The Dark Knight. I also love Batman (1989), Begins was good but nothing spectacular. Gotham Knight, another goodun. Mask Of The Phantasm, just ok. As for Batman Forever and Batman and Robin, oh dear.

And come on, how can you not love this!?!

The Dark Knight is my fave out of the lot with Batman Begins being a close second. Bale was the best Batman IMO followed by Keaton. I feel Kilmer and Clooney fell short.........

Tough call trying to rank them all, but definitely agreed Batman and Robin is the worst of the whole lot; the only thing that could have saved it would have been handing Chris Farley and David Spade (or a similar pair of workable comics) the lead roles and playing it as a deliberate comedy rather than an accidental one. Of course, one has to keep in mind that all 3 visions of the Caped Crusader take place in 3 very different universes, so perhaps trying to lump them all together is overanalyzing to a degree (still, that might make for an interesting fan story someday if someone wants to try, seeing how West's Batman can survive in Keaton and Bale's grimmer worlds...).

That said, if I had to try, I would probably take a wager on Batman Returns as the very best, striking the perfect atmosphere of brooding gloom with occasional light spots of Burtonian touches (love it when our hero, for example, gives the fire eater--who come to think of it looks an awful lot like Jon Lovitz; do you think it is?--a taste of his own medicine); plus, I'll admit the Penguin has always been my favorite Gotham rogue, so any picture featuring Oswald gets a plus (regrettably Chris Nolan has stated he probably won't be using the character in future installments, although I can understand that Mr. Cobblepot is a tough character to convincingly bring to life in a realistic world). Batman Begins would be second; it's a very concise idea of how the Caped Crusader came to be, kind of close to what I envisioned, and I do give Bale an edge (VERY narrowly) over Keaton as the best live action portrayer of the character to date (although Kevin Conroy's Animated Series Batman is still THE definitive one in my book so far, as is Mark Hammill's Joker from the same show). Third would be Keaton's 1989 outing, The Dark Knight follows closely in fourth, and it's pretty much a dead heat between Batman Forever and West's Batman for fifth. Of course, we'll see how the inevitable 3rd film in the current franchise, and the likely further ones after that, stack up before finalizing this list. I'd love to see a seriously done Mr. Freeze (if he's not too tired of superhero films, Patrick Stewart immediately comes to mind) if they think he'd fit in well at some point.

Batman Forever is definately my favorite. It had humour but was also dark like Batman and Returns. Plus I love Jim Carrey!

Which one? He was in 2. Say Returns [Razz] [Big Grin]

For me Michael Kaeton was the best one.
My favorite was the first BATMAN movie .
My favorite villain was Jack Nicholson as The Joker.
I liked Robin. For me they picked decent eye candy for Robin. Hahaha! My daughter is a little peeved that Robin doesnt wear his traditional red, yellow, green combo. Now that I think about it Robins original outfit was pretty damn horrible! And I remember even as a kid thinking "Robin" was such a non-threatening super-hero name! Ooooh...here comes the tough BIRD! hahaha
I hated Christian Bale! And I havent seen the George Clooney one yet so I'll have to get back to you on that one.
My best frienbd has the Old School Adam West movie and he lent it to me so its actually in my house right now. And, yes, the battele with the shark is the highlight of the film.

I liked the one where the guy wore the cape... [Smile]

I like...Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Batman Returns, and Batman (89'). Collected comics as a kid and still have many of them. With the re-incarnation...I'd love to see Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and The Peguin re-cast....hmmmm....who could play them?

Have to say i really like the 2 new Batman films i think Christian Bale brings a much needed dark side to the role,i also liked the first ones with Michael Keaton thought he also had a bit of a sinister look to the charachter.
Didn't like Val Kilmer in that role and George Clooney was just naff i mean his bat suit even had nipples.

Mike,

Now THAT was funny! So it's sorta social, demented and sad, but social. Right? [Big Grin]

I can't understand how anyone could like the two Joel Schumacher-directed Batmans...Batman & Robin especially. There's absolutely no redeeming qualities to that movie at all.

Although apparently Schumacher has realized how much he screwed up; from what I understand, his director's commentaries on the DVDs are essentially a pair of 2-hour apologies to viewers.

Indeed. From what I've heard, his designs for his Batsuit were supposed to be based on Greek statues from antiquity. Why Batman would want to look like a statue when his purpose is to scare the living you-know-what out of evildoers is beyond me.

Batman & Robin didn't even work as a campy throwback to the old Adam West series. It was just a total mess and a failure on all levels. No one could make a worse Batman film if they tried (although McG could probably come as close as humanly possible).

I liked Batman and Batman Forever, but didn't care for Batman Returns or Batman & Robin.

Batman Begins and Dark Knight were very good, and I think that the best villian was Heath Ledger as the joker.
