Do you make them? Do you keep them? What are they?

I always say that I want to spend more time with my friends...even though that's all I do.

I never make New Year Resolutions because I don't enjoy New Year's Eve. I never have.

I remember being forced to go to NYE parties with my folks, and always being left alone - and then having to pretend to be merry at midnight. What's wrong with being alone at the beginning of the new year?

I never made one in my life, but this year I have decided to make the toughest one possible....to quit smoking. They say that quitting smoking cigarettes is right up there with quitting heroine. Somehow I believe that. For you guys who have never been smokers, you have no idea the addiction and habit that is involved here. I have smoked a pack or more a day for 20 years, but when I make a decision to do something, it's final....period.

I'm off and on with the smoking 80s so I feel ya. To me it's more of a habit. I light up on the way to work, breaks, after lunch, and after dinner. I actually quit for about 6 months back in 2003 but as soon as I started graduate school in late 2003 it started again I guess from stress. I've actually cut back but still have the cravings lol. Good luck. I personally never make resolutions as if I really wanna quit it doesn't have to be a resolution....

I hear ya Motley. The only reason I chose New Year's day is because that is about the time my last carton will run out. Pretty stupid I know, but this way I won't have anymore around to tempt me. Two of my brothers quit and at least four other people I know have. If they can, I can. I never tried to quit before because I didn't want to. I now want to, so I will. I know that's easy to say, but my will power is strong. If I don't want to do something, I flat out won't do it. I've been offered so many different kinds of drugs in my life that I lost count, but never did any of them because I didn't want to. I have never even taken any pain killing medication stronger than Tylenol because I don't want that crap in my system and I have an addictive personality. I'll suffer I'm sure, but I'm prepared for that. My smoking is mainly from habit and routine anyway, not the nicotine.

Good luck 80's....I'm not a smoker, but my Mom smoked most of her life, and tried off and on to quit....so I know it's a tough one. She's currently 5 months without a smoke..maybe the longest she's lasted, so I'm hopeful. I wish you luck....

Don't typically make resolutions myself, but I'm hell bent to lose a few pounds...this is the first time in my life that I've weighed 200 pounds...I'm 6 ft tall, so carry the weight OK....but not feeling healthy all around...bad back, not enough energy...so I'm on a misison to eat better and exercise more...feeling too old at 35...been doing pretty good to keep my two year old son active outside, so this is my greatest incentive....

Keep in better shape and more wisely are some resolutions. I worked out yesterday at the gym trying to take off some holiday fat.

My mom quit smoking using Chantix. It worked for her, she quit last year on my birthday, so it's been over a year, and she smoked for 40 years. I know someone else who quit using it too.

My mom had tried to quit many times before, cold turkey, patches, gums, hypnosis...it never worked.

80sRocked -Good Luck with it. I hope you are a success.

I definately want to be in better shape. I am hoping to try and get in to a routine of walking every day.

I started once already then I got sick, then I was so busy. I also hate going out in the cold and in rain or snow. But, I know I need to do it.

80'sRocked - You can do it!!!!

I'm trying to get my partner to quit smoking too - but I'm not forcing it too hard because I know if it happened, I'd probably be forced to give up CocaCola. And that ain't gonna happen!!

Sorry...I take it back about needing luck.
I just have seen alot of people with alot of will to want to quit, and it wasn't that easy.

My Aunt died suddenly of a brain aneurysm, she was only 56. All her medical problems came from smoking, high blood pressure- kidney problems, and they told her to quit, and she tried and beat herself up over it, but she had smoked for 40 years, and it was so hard. She went on vacation, and was scheduled for surgery when she came home, to put a stint in a blocked artery, but she never made it home.

I have never understood smoking. Why anyone would want to breathe smoke in to their lungs, for any reason, is just beyond me. I have never thought anything about that was "cool".

I do believe people can do whatever they want when they put their mind to it, and I have known people to quit cold turkey-the first try- so I know it is possible. I was just trying to say, don't put too much pressure on yourself, because if you slide backwards ...then you might be harder on yourself.

And, I was just saying that I know people in that boat, so I know how tough it is, and I think it is great that it is something you want to do for yourself.

Quit in August... Been smoking since I was 12! But I did it, no gum, no patches, no nothing... just will and determination! In the past, i've had to kick both an alcohol and a coke habit. And cigarettes were by far the hardest. But when you can breathe in the fresh air, and all the little smells and tastes who you couldn't sense before, come back... it is totally worth it!

80'srocked, my full support for you to quit smoking. My mom is an on-off again smoker, and my dad is a lifetime smiker and I have never been none too happy about it. I can't stand what smoke does to clothes and the way they smell. It's a filthy and expensive habit and I hope you to be free from it in 2009. Will power man, use the force!

I'm with you on the Coca Cola Stitch! I'll never quit that either. ISIS, no need for apologies of any kind. I was just saying that it is final already in my head. I will suffer like I never have before, but so be it. Good for you Jaylee! Two of my brothers quit cold turkey with no help aids too. My other brother tried quitting with the patch and he said it burned his arm. My father tried the pills and that had terrible side-effects. Cold turkey for me. My brother also told me that his sense of taste and smell changed dramatically too. I look forward to that. Thanks again all for the support!

80's rocked, good luck to you! I quit smoking over 8 years ago. Pretty much cold turkey, until after a couple days I got leg twitches. But it could have been a combination of post-surgery medicine withdrawal and the nicotine withdrawal. So, for no more than 5 days, I chewed half a stick of Nicorette before going to bed, and that helped with the nighttime leg spasms. After that, I was happy that I quit. I can actually sorta smell stuff now, even though I have allergies too. And I hardly ever eat sweets either. Just a little bit of chocolate once in a while. And food just tastes better. You will be happy when you do it dude!

New Years Eve 1995 on the spur of the moment I made the resolution to quit chewing tobacco; mainly to try and get in the good graces of this girl I was interested in.

Here we are a couple nights away from New Years Eve 2008 and I still haven't had any tobacco after all this time.

I chewed for about 12 years and through hard work, determination and literal pain I was able to kick the habit.

Scary thing is I still crave it quite regularly and I even catch myself reaching in my pocket for a dip.

You should look at pictures of what it is like to get throat and mouth cancer, and you'll never want to chew tobacco ever again.

I remember that use to be such a thing with boys when I was in junior high, boys thought they were cool, when they had their jeans on -that had the snuff can ring wore down in their back pocket. All the guys playing baseball chewed tobacco. I thought it was the most disgusting thing ever. I thought who wants to ever kiss someone that has all that junk in their mouth and in their teeth- it is highly a turn off.

I didn't know that guys still even did it any more.
I remember my friend in high school...her boyfriend...chewed tobacco, and he always carried a pop can around with him, to spit in-it was revolting.

I chewed for about a year back in 83. I had a bunch of friends who chewed all day long. They ate lunch with chew in their mouths...

I'm giving up loads of things:

* Bunjee jumping;
* Sky diving;
* Extreme ironing;
* Mainlining 7-Up;
* Annoying the people in the 7-11 by telephoning and asking what time they close;
* Setting up a barbecue pit in the local park, piling acorns in the center, then waiting behind a tree with a flamethrower for when the squirrels turn up;
* Taking pride in the range of body odors I can produce;
* Kissing guys that chew tobacco

I reckon if I stick to those, I'll be a better person. However, I may not make it past January 10 on some of them......

Sammy, my dad's like that. When he gets a craving he chews, get this, toothpicks. Myself, I don't get it, but to each his own.

My grandpa kicked the chewing tobacco habit by eating a Lifesaver everytime he got a craving and weened himself off it......

Posted by ISIS (Member # 1780) on :

My dad does the toothpick thing too.

We were talking about it when he was here the other day.

Do you guys remember those toothpicks that were cinnamon flavored?

We were trying to remember who made them. I think people use to make them at home.

Posted by Pittsburghgirl (Member # 7514) on :

They are made with cinnamon oil. My husband, ever the schemer as a child, used to sell them in school.
My grandfather used to chew Mail Pouch tobacco forever!

In case you guys were wondering, this is day 3 with no cigarettes for me. The suffering is as bad and real as you can imagine. I had no idea how much smoking suppresses the appetite. Now I am also starving all the time and have to force myself to not eat as well. This is pure agony and a very good method to use if you ever need to torture someone. Anyway, I'm sticking with it.

That's awesome! I think once you get through the withdrawals, that's the worst- physically- because once you get the nicotine out of your system -it only takes some days. The worst part (people say) is breaking the routine-habit. That's why people gain weight too, they substitute food for cigarettes, then you have to break that habit, so chew gum.

Wish it was that easy. This will take far more than days. Probably weeks or months. Like I said, if you never smoked before, you can't even fathom how bad this is and makes you feel....dizzy, lightheaded, paniced, depressed, shaky, starving, plus more.

Stitch and 80's...I can't imagine that giving up CocaCola would be that hard...now...giving up Pepsi...that would be a challenge [Wink]

Kevdug-I am with you all the way on the Pepsi habit. I love Pepsi. I actually do want to quit drinking as much of it as I do...you get headaches from coming off caffeine too.

I honestly have never attempted to quit anything. I have never been on a diet ever either.

Hang in there buddy. You can do it!!! It takes about 7 days for the craving to die down... Till then, drink tea (iced or hot) when you want to smoke, eat anything with mint in it (mint candies etc). Mint settles the stomach and hunger pains as well as helps with nicotine cravings. Just try it... DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL for a while!!!

You can do it, but YOU GOTTA WANT IT!!! [Big Grin]

Thanks for the tips Jdoc. First off though, it is now almost 6 days and there is no improvement at all with the cravings. I'm still suffering bad. I think it will never go away, ever! As far as drinking tea....I don't. Will try the mints. Alcohol....that actually helps believe it or not. I used to smoke like a chimney when I drank beer too, but now it helps to have a full stomach. The starvation for food is still worse than the cigarette cravings. Anyways, the torture continues. I'll give another update soon. This might be a cool documentary.

Don't starve yourself...snack on stuff...healthy stuff...like strawberries and raw vegetables, trail mix, yogurt- then you don't have to worry about gaining all the weight...and you won't have an empty stomach.

Hang in there!

OK, figured I'd give an update with the non-smoking. It's been 18 days now and still going strong. Not even one puff. Do I still crave? Yes, but it is slightly better. Last week was absolute torture. I did start chewing gum which helps. I really hate it though and my jaw is sore by the time I go to bed, but I think the worst is behind me now. Thanks again to all of you who were behind me the whole way. Most of my own family doubted me and said I could never do this. It just made me want it more and shove it in their faces.

Perfect time as any to bump this!

I can't believe it's been 2 years since I wrote all this and quit smoking.... not a single cigarette since!

Anybody feel like sharing their resolutions for this year? None for me.

Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :

Way to go on giving up the smokes, 80sRocked! I'm on month five myself.

New Year's resolution: Try not to put myself in a situation where I will have to commit manslaughter. That usually means to avoid strip malls, any bar that has country line dancing, and the non-Mel Brooks films of Dom DeLuise. :-)

Posted by kevdugp73 (Member # 5978) on :

1. Now able to scratch the BOTTOM of my belly...check.
2. Causes slight pain and nausea to tie my shoes...check.
3. Out of breath if climbing more than 10 stairs...check.
4. Plead with my four year old to pull ME back to the top of the snow hill...check.
5. Time to eat better and exercise a bit more...CHECK!

* I know...the classic age old New Year's Resolution...but unfortunatley...very necessary. I'm 6 ft tall, so hold the 210 lbs OK...but now aiming for 195ish....I'm 37 and a very good Dad, so time to take this job more serious and ensure I'm there for my boy for as long as possible. May sound a bit extreme for the sake of 15 lbs...but, I don't know about where you guys live...people are dropping like flies around here.

* Congrats to 80's and Crash on kicking your smoke habit....
