Leave it to me to get this thread rolling. Maybe because my Rangers start off with 2 awesome wins! [Big Grin] Could be a nice season after all. Like I always say....preseason means nothing.

Let's keep this thread strong all year. All hockey talk - anything goes.

I'm wagering either Pennsylvania team will be the ultimate winner this year (depending, perhaps, on what the mood of William Penn's oft agitated spirit is).

Hell no, can't stand the Flyers.

I watched all 4 games live past weekend
and Rangers seems to be a tough team this season,
or is it just that Bolts are so bad.

I hope that rangers will keep Korpikoski up.

Also Senators got something going on right from the start.
On saturday they lost only because Gerberīs bad goaltending.

Ruutu did his job and Crosby was really frustrated.

hockey doesn't officially start for me until the devils play, which is this friday against the isles. devils are the most improved team in the toughest division and should contend with the penguins for the division title and, hopefully, a long playoff run.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

You meant the toughest division in the east and not the league right? There is no comparison to the teams in the West. The Devils got Rolston back, any others they picked up? Their scoring has been woeful the past few years.

Devils still have the finnish rookie Anssi Salmela on the roster.
He was really good offensive defenceman last year in the finnish league.

anssi is still with the team and from what i've read he will be playing this friday night. he may even get a top 4 pairing so he'll get a lot of ice time. hopefully he takes advantage of it. we could use another offensive minded defensman. plus he's not big but he plays a pretty tough game defensively.

i have no problem saying the atlantic division is the toughest in hockey. rags, devils, pens, flyers beat up on each other all year long and are all considered cup contenders. don't let some west coast bias get in the way of the facts. the atlantic had 4 teams finish in the top 7 last season. and i don't buy this BS that the west is far superior. DET may be, but don't think that the rest of the teams out west would have cakewalked through the east.

xchazx....I notice you keep leaving the Rangers out. They're tougher than you think.

I'd be leary of the Rangers right now because from what I hear Lundqvist's health might be a concern. They also don't have anybody who will be able to fill in for the departure of Jagr. Granted they took two from Tampa Bay but the Lightning will have an extremely tough time making the playoffs this season.

Posted by 80'sRocked (Member # 6979) on :

Your right....they definitely need Lundqvist. Dubinsky looks like he's ready to break out this year.

Believe me....I know that 2 wins early is nothing to get too excited about, but let the other teams start before we say who's making the playoffs and who the best teams are. Preseason and "on paper" means nothing....especially in this sport.

uh, what?

when i talked about the atlantic being the toughest division i, against my better judgement, included the rags. take another look.

should i have put hugs and kisses around their name?

they got their 4 pts in europe and that's fine. i still think they have a lot to prove. their goalie has two cranky knees and let's see if zherdev and naslund can replace jagr and straka. and they never replaced that douche avery. you better hope the kiddies step up.

and in no time you will see what a sieve redden is. all the OTT fans i know hated him and couldn't wait for him to be gone. they were ****ed he wouldn't waive his no trade clause. he was good when he was paired with chara. once the big man left, redden has been awful. but you'll see that soon enough.

i can make the argument that out of all the teams in the atlantic, only the devils got better. the flyers added no one and lost umberger, the pens lost hossa and now have two top d men out for a long time, and the isles, well, i won't waste anyone's time with that mess of a team. we lost no one of significance and added holik and rolston. our defense is all no names, although martin and salvador will be sick, but this same defense gave up the fourth fewest goals last year. and we've got this goaltender, i forget his name, but he's pretty good.

friday can't come soon enough.

I love the fire xchazx! A true hockey fan indeed. I must have missed that you mentioned the Rangers because "rags" isn't in my vocabulary. I can't wait for Friday either. Let the games begin!

BTW, Holik ain't what he used to be. Don't expect too much from him like I did when he was on my team a couple of years ago. He's up there in age too. You can have him back. [Wink]

your team completely used him wrong. he was great on the devils because we knew his limits and used his strengths. the rags thought he was a #1 center and paid him as such. holik isn't that type of player.

i will always love holik. he's like the prodigal son coming home. he spent the last six years in purgatory, now he gets to come back and show everyone what devils hockey is about. he'll now play on the largest line in hockey, along with zubrus(6'4" 225) and rupp(6'5 235). and they'll be going against other teams #3 pairing defenseman, he's looked great in the preseason so far. we'll see.

i really do like you and in any other thread i would be super respectful towards you. but in this thread, it can't be done, for you are a rags fan. or blueskirts fan if you will. and being one means we're natural enemies, like the cobra and the mongoose. i hate the rags more than any other team. it's just part of the baggage devils fans carry with them.

i'll keep things cool, though.*

* unless the devils suck and the rags are good then i'll probably be a baby about it.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

While I admit Holik was great with in his first stint with the Devils, he really got way overpaid with the Rangers, Thrashers, he's just not the same player anymore. I'm not that impressed with the Rangers pickups of Redden and Naslund, the one that I like is getting Nikolai Zherdev, who I can't believe Columbus gave up on. He's going to be good.

I like you too xchazx. Doesn't mean we can't go at it here. It's hockey!, and we have a great rivalry. In this thread, say whatever you want and I won't take it personally. I hate the ****ing Devils just as much as you hate the Blueshirts. It should be like that. That means we are true fans.

That goes for everyone. No holds barred here. [Wink]

As far as Devils go I have Parise on two of my teams and also have Brodeur on one of the teams that has Parise. Then I also have Gionta on one of my teams.

they'll never be able to sign sundin unless they release or trade redden or roszival, which ain't happening. the rags are capped out, or at least enough not to be able to sign sundin.

the last rumor i heard was that he and forsberg were going to join colorado sometime during the season.

i don't think forsberg will play anymore either, but you never know.

it's funny that the team that needs him the most since they have no forwards to speak of and who offered him the most money is a team he won't even condsider playing for. sorry vancouver.

Thoroughly enjoyed the only NHL game I've ever been to, on one of my trips over to the US. Got to go to see Islanders vs Chicago Blackhawks - neither team was playing particularly well, but it was very different to the game over here in the UK - we get a lot of young kids learning the game that are sent over from the NHL junior squads to toughen up, and older guys trying for one last payday.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Hey Paul, the Blackhawks are an up and coming team finally after so many bad teams and management over the years. Former owner Bill Wirtz was akin to Harold Ballard ruining the Maple Leafs in the 80's.

As for the Habs, I think they are almost capped out as well and won't be able to get Sundin unless he wants to play for 2 million or something. Forsberg is pretty much finished, he is so brittle it's not funny.

Looks like VP candidate Sarah Palin will drop the puck Saturday at the beginning of the Rangers/Flyers game. She's also been cozying up to Flyers owner Ed Snider who made a campaign contribution ot the Republicans. Damn Flyers.

Sundin definitely won't be a Ranger.
Shanahan??????????
Should be a good game tomorrow night against Chicago. They certainly have alot of youth and will play hard.

Also, keep in mind that Pennsylvania is a "swing state", so any kind of campaign exposure is crucial to a candidate.

Don't be suprised if she shows up at a Phillies game in Philadelphia, during the league championship series against the L.A. Dodgers.

This is what you get when you hire an English band to a Stanley Cup party

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/No-one-gave-Def-Leppard-the-Stanley-Cup-instruct?urn=nhl,113984

Sorry Joe Elliot the Stanley Cup goes the other way. Maybe you and the rest of the Def Leppard boys better stick to soccer.

For as much as I hate Nickelback it would have probably made more sense to invite a Canadian band to a hockey party.

Habs lost in the shootout, Price stood on his head, but looked shaky in the shootout. Nice to see Lang get a goal. So far we've lost 163 of a possible 164 points......

Did you see the way the Maple Leafs were playing last night? Ron Wilson has gotten them playing the trap.

that's funny because the rangers do play the trap. or as sam rosen calls it, a "passive forecheck". it was only called a trap when the devils used it(which they don't use anymore since sutter came on board). the rags used it all last season. i once had a picture of the rags using it as evidence but the pic has been lost. lucky you. thank the rags for ruining hockey now.

devils steal one from pittsburg tonight. not happy with the lack of scoring but they completely outworked the pens tonight. sometimes you need a littel luck.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

The Devils outshot the Pens like 47 to 14 or something. Where was Crosby or Malkin? I always thought the Devils still play the trap. Elias has got put up some points this year. Brodeur is 11 wins away ffrom tying Patrick Roy's all time win record fro a goalie. When he retires, his stats will probably be the best of all time. I think he's close to Sawchuk's all time shutouts record too. It got feisty too with new Pen enforcer Godard had a bout with a devil. Never heard the Rangers called Rags, the only name I've heard someone call them is the Blueshirts. Zherdev looks good on broadway, he's no Jagr(who is?), but he's doing OK.

The Habs beat up on Toronto, and I'm beaming ear to ear. Nice to seee Tanguay and Latendresse have big games. Playing philly Monday night will be a test. They knocked us out of the playoffs last year and we ant to prove a point.

Too bad that Gerber finally blew it

it wasn't taken personally. i don't get offended. the devils did use the trap for a long time. they were unfairly portrayed as playing boring hockey, even though teams like DET, ANA, and OTT, among others, also used the trap. the devs just used it the best and had the best goalie and got the best results.

remember, anything goes here. i just thought it was funny what you said because the rags absolutely used the trap last season. it's one of the reasons why they only scored 10 more goals than the devils had. and why a guy like jagr struggled all season long(and it's why gaborik will be leaving MIN sooner than later). like i said, i had photographic evidence of it being used, but i never saved it on my computer.

when you have one player chasing the puck, and the other four forming a box between the blue lines, that's called a trap. believe me, i know all about what a trap looks like. it's not my opinion, it is what it is.

see ya monday night.

same bulls**t as last season: no defense, no protecting broduer, and no scoring.

i was sick last night and i thought it was food poisoning, but it was probably having to watch the f**king devils and giants. terrible sports night for me.

glad the devils decided we couldn't keep voros but held onto mike rupp. great choice.

A great night, with the Habs beating hated Philly. There was some rough stuff in the game, they put some hits on Komisarek, let's see them try that next time when Laraque suits up. Can't stand Scott Hartnell. So far I'mpressed with the newcomers Tanguay and Lang making contributions. Latendresse is showing me more, and the Konstisyn brothers look dangerous.

those guys were throwing haymakers.

the devils have more problems than just scoring, though that is their biggest problem. it's only 3 games in, so i'll chill for now. but this looks an awful lot like last season already. we could easily be 0-3. we beat the isles by one goal, and our second goal in that game was clearly goalie interference. and we got a lucky bounce against the pens to tie it up, though the game winner was nice.

we'll see how we do thursday against the thrashers.

blackhawks fire savard and hire quenville. that seemed like a rash move. there had to be something else going on.

Good post xchazx. Thanks for the info. That does seem like a pretty quick panic move only a handful of games into the season. I know they have high expectations for their team this year.

Blueshirts had a terrible game last night. Very sloppy all night. Powerplay, PK....brutal. And a very dumb major penalty by Mara....totally stupid what he did. I don't mind losing, but not like that. I do have to give Buffalo credit though....even with their injuries, they are a hell of a team. Can't say enough about Vanek.

The coach that could be in trouble is behind the bench down in Anaheim.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Was a but surpised too about Savard's firing, but I guess the writing was on the wall when Scotty Bowman joined the team, he sees Quenville has more experience and they weren't playing well this year. Wonder where he will go next?

Buffalo looks good this year, still no Tim Conolly though, they need him. Vanek, Pominville and Roy are ones to watch. Can't say enough of Ryan Miller either. Did you see that crazy bounce off the boards last night at the end of the Montreal-Boston game? I don't know why Price has to come out of the net like that, but they stopped skating in the third period and the Bruins got a point out of it.

I've been hearing a lot of talk on local sports radio about Marian Gaborik's status. Doesn't look like he will resign, and the fact that the Wild are coveting Chris Higgins is fueling the rumour mill. Gabby is an amazing player who could really do wonders in a more offensive system, but the probable 8 million asking price could destroy our cap space. There's interest too in Saku playing with Mikko in Minnesota, but Saku has been really lighting it up of late, plus he is the captain.

So Avery was playing his old team last night, looked like it worked as Dallas won. Avery is usually such a meathead, but he had some kind words for the Rangers organization. After last year's incident with Brodeur, Avery has to be the lowest on your list eh xchazxx?

Posted by xchazx (Member # 7158) on :

gaborik is good as hell but he is also very injury prone(he's already missed the last two games). it will be interesting to see what MIN gets for him, especially since they've been playing so well to start the year.

avery is a dooshbag. just a low class hockey player, and that has nothing to do with the rags. i give them credit for letting him go since they were successful when he was on the ice. he'll be playing in the KHL soon enough once he wears out his welcome in DAL.

i read on the HF Boards that he(avery) had some big time run-in with sam gianccone, an msg announcer who was supposed to interview him between periods. this guy barch from DAL had to seperate them as they got into a loud verbal confrontation. any truth to this 80's rocked?

You guys are right about Avery. If he's not on your team, he's a real a-hole. He tried to stir it up a bit during warm-ups last night. He'll never change. Reminds me a bit of Ulf Samuelsson. I didn't here anything about that scuffle between periods. It's probably true. I was so frustrated after that loss that I didn't watch any of the postgame. I must say though, he helped the Blueshirts last year....he's all yours tomorrow night xchazx.

Nice win again for you Riptide. Habs look mighty good.

We should rename him Sean Knavery ebing hockey's biggest villain and all. He stirs up $%it like no one I've seen, Matthew Barnanby and Dale Hunter are close though. I'm just so glad we don't get to play Dallas that much being in the west now, it really made my blood boil when he was dating hometown beauty Elisha Cuthbert, thank god they split.

Eleanor June, great to have you aboard, nice to have some Avs talk.

Yes the Habs have 11 of 12 points, but because the throng is so fanatical here you would think they are having a losing season. People wondering why Kovalev doesn't have more points, the defense is allowing 30+ shots a game, all kinds of stuff. What is the state of your local sports radio? I know NY is really harsh, but hard to believe they could be this fanatical like here. No wonder some big free agents were hesitant to play here.

If the Wild end up trading Gaborik they better get a couple good players + a draft pick. Fair value is all I'm asking.

Hey Rip....For years we wondered why Kovalev didn't have more points.

NY radio SUCKS for hockey. They very rarely mention it at all....it's sad.

Kovalev has been an enigma pretty much his whole career. He has always had breathtaking skills, but without the consistency or work ethic to match. The man should be a future hall of famer, but his stats don't translate. He had a career season in the early 2000's playing with Jagr and the Pens, and we did get an 84 pooint season from him last year. He's a player that has to be coddled, handled with kids gloves that sort of thing. Wish he was more like the awesome Ovechkin.

Hmmm, no Rangers talk on radio? That's too bad. Probably can't break the Mets/Yankees monopoly.

not much to add here, but here is a little blurb from TSN about the avery/giannone run in.

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=253360&lid=sublink07&lpos=headlines_main

with the injury to holik, the devils called up pierre luc letorneau leblond. hopefully he is on the ice with avery tonight.

I don't follow a lot of teams other than the Avs, Wings..because I can't stand them and the Blues because my boss likes them. I have center ice so I do catch a lot of games though.

Here are my thoughts so far this season. I am not feeling Budaj this year. Totally missing Theadore. Did anyone see Laperriere cuss out his own teamate and whap him upside the head? It was Salei I beleive. During the Flyers game last week. He caused them to play two down. As soon as he joined Lappy in the box, he lost it. I love it when the mic him up and you can listen. As soon as the Flyers scored their second goal, Lappy took his hand right upside the back of his head. I have is on DVR it will be there forever!

Thanks for the welcome. I am kinda used to being the only girl in a hockey crowd! Doesn't bother me though.

Go AVS!

Nothing is hotter than a girl who likes hockey with the exception of the surface of the sun I reckon.

I think the Avs were in a lose/lose situation as far as goalies go. I don't think Budaj or Theodore are good enough to make their team a top notch contender in this league.I see both the 'Lanche and the Capitals being first round losers in the playoffs unless they can improve their netminders.

I too have the Center Ice package for the fourth season now. Will never go without again.

Thanks for the post xchazx. It says that Avery made a remark about Gianonne's wife. It's one thing to trash talk, but don't talk about one's family....classless indeed.

Looking forward to Devs/Dallas tonight....should be interesting.

As you can tell I'm a big fan of the NHL but my love of hockey goes much deeper. I'm also a huge fan of college hockey namely the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux. I did a quick scan of all the current NHL rosters and found the following former Sioux now playing in the NHL.

Zach Parise--New Jersey Devils
Travis Zajac--New Jersey Devils
Drew Stafford--Buffalo Sabres
Brian Lee--Ottawa Senators
Jason Blake--Toronto Maple Leafs
Jonathan Toews--Chicago Blackhawks
T.J. Oshie--St. Louis Blues
David Hale--Phoenix Coyotes
Ryan Bayda--Carolina Hurricanes
Mike Commodore--Columbus Blue Jackets
Matt Greene--Los Angeles Kings
Ryan Johnson--Vancouver Canucks

As you can tell there's some pretty decent players on that list and a lot of future stars. I'm also sure there's a few guys who are in the high minors who are close to being called up and I believe that over the years there's been 100+ Sioux who have played in the NHL. A bigtime hockey factory if there ever was one.

Hey xchazx how about them Devils tonight? They actually scored some goals and Brodeur got yet another shutout. I wish I had Marty on all four of my fantasy teams but I'm fortunate to have him on one. My Reservoir Dogs team reaps the benefits of him.

I hardly ever root for the Devils(especially how they dealt with Claude Julien), but tonight was sweet seeing Marty Brodeur get his 98th shutout and sticking it to Avery.

Sam, I had no idea so many good players came out of the Fighting Sioux program, I would have thought that Michigan was a bigger program. But then again, Minnesota is the birthplace of US hockey. Hobey Baker was from there.

There's been a lot of talk lately about Toronto having a second NHL team, due to the popularity and no one can get Leaf tickets. Bettman seems to be opposed to expansion in Canada, and continues to support those hockey hotbeds of Nashville and Atlanta and their half empty stadiums. What do you guys think? Are there too many teams?

seeing avery get his lunch handed to him would have made it a perfect evening, but he refused to fight clarkson, which is not a surprise. i'll take a 5-0 shutout anyday. devils played great last night. hopefully we keep it up with the home and home against the cryers this weekend. i'd hate to be the team that gives them their first win.

and marty keeps proving why he is the best goalie in the game. every game we've had a chance to win has been as a direct result of marty. this devils organization is going to crumble when he finally decides to retire. i know he has 3 yrs left on his contract, and if he stays in shape and is motivated, he could probably play another 2. but i don't want to get ahead of myself.

and the devils must love those SD guys, not only do they have zajac and parise, but they also drafted david hale and mike commodore.

Sometimes it takes awhile to fill the shoes of greatness. That seems to be the Avs issue with goalies. Budaj could be good if he wanted it bad enough. He has made some amazing saves, but what get's past him should hvae been easy saves. He let's the crap through. I am extremely opinionated when it comes to hockey. Sorry.

I used to catch a lot of Michigan State games. Also grew up playing pond hockey with my brothers and cousins. My temper always got the best of me though. One of my best friends is one of the best female hockey players I have ever seen. And she is cute as he** too. There isn't much for females in the sport though.

This will be my second season with Center Ice. Yeah I will never go back again. I used to work nights and could never catch a game, and never wait to watch it on DVR. I had to know the score right away. No patience here!

for my man 80's rocked, from the genius known as kevin smith:

quote:
Part of being a Devils fan is the incessant defense of their style of play to other hockey fans. Have you experienced this?

Oh, every [expletive] and their uncle wants to tell you that, "The Devils ruined hockey with that trap [expletive] system of theirs." You can't argue with three Cups, dude. That trap system is three Cups. It may not be exciting hockey to you, but it's not about making it exciting -- it's about winning the Cup for heaven's sake.

It's a system that works, and you know how I know it works? Because now the [expletive] Rangers are playing the trap style. Now everybody [expletive] plays [expletive] trap style.

What is your general impression of Rangers fans?

I don't think people like being Rangers fans as much as they like hating on the Devils. That's how it always occurs to me, man. Nothin' wrong with the Rangers team, but their fans ... some of them are just so insanely ardent to the point of being insulting to every other team in the league, but most particularly to Jersey.

"You guys won a Cup, and you had a parade in your parking lot. Dude, we had a parade in Manhattan."

Well I'm sorry, we're not based on Manhattan. I don't know what to tell you.

here's the entire interview:

xchazx, I don't know how old you are, but did you ever remember the Islanders-Rangers rivalry? It was really intense back in the 70's and 80's. I was wondering if that rivalry will ever come back. The owner Wang has ruined the franchise, Mike Milbury didn't help either. Eleanor June, with you being an AVS fan do you think Patrick Roy or Marty Brodeur was the best goalie?

i didn't start watching hockey until 1988, the year the devils first made the playoffs. i never knew anyone who liked hockey growing up so i never got into the sport. but it was a big deal when the devils made the playoffs, so i became interested in them then. but i really became a hockey fan around '91 or '92 or so, when my friends and i first started playing ea sports nhl on the sega genesis. that's how i actually learned the rules of hockey and who the teams and players were.

but i do remember watching a playoff game between the isles and the rags back in the late 70's or early 80's, whenever they met. i think it may have been a conference final. my uncle was a big rangers fan and i remember him going crazy during the game. i'm pretty sure the rags lost. i also remember those sassoon commercials. they were hilarious.

the isles really need to get good again and sustain it for a while. they're such a poorly run franchise. i'd say because of the devils success over the past 15 yrs, they became a better rivalry for the rags.

but some devils fans think philly is our main rival.

i read on another board that sundin took the nhl physical and is going to skate for a while before he decides who he wants to play for. it's got to be MON, even if VAN will pay him more.

I was actually quite taken with the Devils in the late 80's when they had a rookie Shanahan(still remember his 1st NHL goal, where he kissed Claude Loiselle on the ice), Aaron Broten, Alain Chevrier, Ken Daneyko, Mark Johnson and the infamous Jim Schoenfeld. I will always remember the donut comment and his run in with ref Koharski. Seems like yesterday when I watched that.

It was a real heated rivalry with Isles and Rangers, there used to be this thing when HOF'er Denis Potvin used to play in MSG and they would always chan "Potvin sucks." The Isles were knocked out by the Rangers too in the late 70's a few times before they went on their four year cup run.

I can't stand Philly, I hate the way they play, players like Hartnell, Upshall, even Richards irks me.

I can't see Sundin in Montreal, but I see him either going back to the Leafs or in Vancouver. I also heard possibilities of the Rangers and Ottawa, but not sure how he feels playing for division rivals.

there is no way the rags get him unless he either gives them the biggest discount ever or they move someone making a ton of cash(gomez to VAN was a rumor over the summer). right now the rags are under a million in available cap space.

OTT has a little over 4.3mil available, so that could work. i haven't heard them mentioned as a team he'd play for. but who knows, he may just end up back in TOR. VAN is the team that needs him most.

Posted by EleanorJune (Member # 7024) on :

Brodeur is a great goalie, personally I think he brought home the cup for the devils all three times. But typically in season games, he has always had a great defense to stand infront of him. Given yes during playoffs the d didnt hold up their end of the bargain, and he had to carry it out by himself. Much kudo's there.

Now on the other hand Roy has longevity. He can take a beating and he keeps going. Open shot after open shot and he saves them.

Roy will always be my fave. I met him in person and you couldn't ask for a greater guy. I give props to Brodeur, but to me it's Roy. I feel you can't compare the stats on the two. They have played behind much different defenses. So yeah, I am saying Roy. I want a goalie who can take it hard and maintain his saves. Rather than a great goalie who makes incredible saves, but has not had to make as many. Hopefully that makes sense to you!

But let's see when happens when Brodeur retires!

Posted by EleanorJune (Member # 7024) on :

But.....I must say.....Hasek.....now that's a goalie!!

Posted by 80'sRocked (Member # 6979) on :

Roy and Hasek are of course brilliant....I must admit though, I have been saying that Marty is the best goalie of all time for years now.

I'm like you xchazx....I didn't become a Rangers fan until around 1989, so I missed all that rivalry of Isles/Rangers in the late 70's and early 80's. Now that the Isles are basically crap and have been so-so for so many years, Devils/Rangers is a much better rivalry IMO.

I can't see Sundin coming here....highly unlikely.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

In Montreal, as great as Roy was, he always seems to generate controversy here. His number will be retired here in November, but there have been grumblings all the time because of the way he left the organization. If you recall rookie coach Mario Tremblay didn't pull him in 9-0 loss to Detroit and he went to the bench and told then team president that he played his last game in Montreal. He went to the Avs and the rest is history. It gave his career a new lease on life. I will always be grateful though for his amazing heroics in the last two cups in 86 and 93. Brodeur has been fortunate to play for a team where he could get 40 wins a year. He's been able to have few injuries as well, it's so close but I seem to think Brodeur will have all best goalie stats in history when he is done.

80's rocked, who is your favorite Blueshirt goalie of all time? Is it Mike Richter, John Vanbiesbrouck, Lundqvist or do you go old school with John Davidson and Ed Giacoman?

Sundin in Ottawa might be a possibility, they have 4.3 million left to the cap. I just would dread the Senators stepping up a notch like that. Please go to the west.

Posted by 80'sRocked (Member # 6979) on :

Sundin to the west sounds good to me too. Our divisions are tough enough as it is.

Mike Richter is the Rangers best goalie ever and not only my favorite goalie, but possibly my favorite player of all time. His heart, passion, and skills combined make him one of the greats. Also loved the Beezer though. King Henrik might be better than both someday.

Rangers finally beat Columbus last night in their own building. First time since 2001. Zherdev gets 3 points against his former team for first star honors. I see that Philly finally got their first win....sorry xchazx....not. That was a pretty good fight with Cote and Leblond though.

I remember that 9-0 game with Roy. Quite embarassing. I also recall a game against the Blueshirts when Roy was stickhandling the puck, deeked 2 Rangers, and crossed the red-line so he was given a penalty. He had some skills.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

I totally forgot about that Roy stickhandling game. Thanks for reminding me. I will never forget when Guy Lafleur came out of retirement to join the Rangers after a 4-5 year hiatus. I remember he came back to the forum and scored two goals against Roy. Even if it was against the Habs, I was so estatic because a few years prior I met him at a sports banquet when he was playing on the oldtimers circuit and many people encouraged him to return to the NHL because he could still skate like the wind. Ah the memories.

Who's your all time Rangers enforcer? Is it Langdon, Tie Domi, Nick Fotiu, Jeff Beukeboom? As far as favorite players ever, would you rate Richter higher than Messier?

I still can't believe the Blue Jackets gave up Zherdev like they did. The got served last night.

Posted by 80'sRocked (Member # 6979) on :

Zherdev sure has some skills. Sam's Wild gets Columbus tonight.

Don't forget Joey Kocur on the Blueshirts enforcer list. Those are all good ones you listed. I love Mess, but Richter is still my fav. Leetch is probably 2nd. Love Gravy as well.

Can't believe I found this clip on youtube. This is funnier than I remembered. Roy skating past the redline penalty. Remember this EleanorJune?

Joey Kocur, not a fighter to mess with, supposedly he cracked a hockey helmet with his fist during his early years with Detroit.

What a rough affair with Philly-NJ last night. They started piling on their BSB shenanigans last night and got a victory out of it. The Rangers tying the game with 8 seconds left? You gotta be kidding me. Great shootout as well. The Ducks JS Giguere stole on against the Habs last night. The only time we get 50 shots on net and our goaltending lets us down. Frustrating. Didn't even notice the Wild picked up Owen Nolan until last night.

Gaborik's trade value sure didn't get helped any as he was put on the IR yet again. If the guy could only stay healthy and play in a system more fit for his style he could be the most dynamic player in the entire league. I still loved that game last season when he scored five goals against the Strangers.

Yeah Minnesota got Nolan during the offseason they needed to get another physical force to compenaste for the loss of fedoruk and Chris Simon who also brings more offensive skill than either one of those two.

Minnesota got a gift last night. Minnesota was leading Columbus 2-1 with twelve seconds to go in the game when Nash scored a goal and was called as such on the ice. The play went to the replay booth where it was overturned for being hit with a high stick. The way the replay looked to me is that it was too hard to tell and that the review would have had to go along with whatever decision was made on the ice as it appeared to be too inconclusive either way. Review booth saw it otherwise and overyurned the refs call so it was no goal and Minnesota got the 2-1 victory.

Backstrom has been pretty lights out between the pipes so far this season.

That 3rd period in the Pens/Rangers game was one of their best in a long time. I went nuts when Zherdev tied that baby up with 8 seconds and change left. Lunqvist was amazing in OT as well. I was just praying for 1 point and got 2.

of course after i posted what i wrote i saw that gaborik was put on IR. that guy is awesome, but he is soooo fragile. this latest injury was from him playing hackey sack. really, hackey sack.

i'm sure MIN has done everything they could to keep him. he must really hate playing jacque's style. though MIN is still playing great without him. they better make sure they get good compensation for him, players like him don't come along all the time.

The younger Koivu is making a splash in the scoring race with another 3 assists. The Rangers had no trouble with the Isles, what a sorry franchise. Are the Oilers going to wear those retro uniforms all year? They really look great with the bold orange. What's everyone's favorite uniform around the league? I've always been a fan of the white home Chicago jersey. I like the retro white and green Vancouver one too.

The Flyers destroyed some team tonight 7-0. Damn.

The Capitals are winning but suprisingly scoring champ Ovechkin isn't on the score sheet. Bizarre.

The last couple minutes of the overtime period in the Habs game was pretty exciting. Habs had the powerplay but couldn't knock her home. wasn't from lack of effort on their part. Tonight was one of those rare occasions on the Center Ice package where we got the French broadcast of Les Canadienes instead of the English broadcast.

I can't even talk about the Flames/Avs game....I usually lay between my gigantic dogs...no really huge dogs. 120lbs and 80 lbs. They got tired of me yelling and throwing my fists around. I even had a bowl of popcorn and they left the room. (bit of a temper) I taped the Habs game....I will catch up on that today, not much going on at work.

can't wait for the devils game tonight. we have injuries to three of our regulars so the devils are bringing up two prospects to play tonight and i can't wait to see them play. hopefully they gel quickly or are at least given a chance to gel so i can see less of rupp and clarkson once the devils get healthy again.

eleanor, my wife won't allow me to watch the games with my kids around, well at least my 4yr old, because somehow he picks up words he shouldn't be saying when he watches them with me. same with giants football games. it's all good though, i'd rather watch the games alone anyway. that way i can suffer in peace.

I was suffering last night. My daughter usually goes to bed around 7 so I never have to worry about her catching my words. I have once woken her up with my rants. It is just Ella and I, so I usually watch games alone. Or on speaker phone with one of my brothers.

Kiprusoff all of a sudden has settled down, shutting down the high scoring Avs was no small task. With the exception of the Flyers-Thrashers game, anyone notice scoring has been down of late? A bunch of shutouts and low scoring affairs. The Penguins had 11 shots on net yesterday. Is this a trap comeback?

Posted by xchazx (Member # 7158) on :

lots of teams have always played the trap, the devils just seemed to have been the team that took the most heat for it.

some pens fans on another board i frequent said the sharks looked like the wild last night. i'm guessing it had something to do with the trap.

and goalies need to have their pads smaller. there are too many michelin man looking goalies out there.

and also, players are bigger and quicker which makes the ice surface seem smaller. there's lots of factors. but it's only october, so maybe it's just a case of offenses developing slower than defenses.

Must have been quite a bit of swearing tonight. That was a crazy game xchazx....and MN finally lost as well.

Yup Minnesota suffered their first regulation loss of the season. Dallas jumped on them early scoring eighteen seconds into the game and put up a three spot by the end of the first. Minnesota also gave up their first power play goal of the season.

Wild and Habs should be a great game tomorrow night in St. Paul

Great game tonight between two of the Western Confrences heavyweights as Anaheim defeats the Red Wings 5-4 in OT.

Talking about the stars stepping it up

*The Wings got two goals apiece out of their snipers Datsyuk and Zetterberg

*The Ducks got a hat trick out of Selanne all on the power play

*Getzlaf of the Ducks had a helper on all five Anaheim goals

So who scores the game winner? Beauchemin LOL

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

In the Habs-Ducks game last week, I noticed that Scott Niedermeyer started to step it up. Him and Selanne being there at the start of the season this year makes a big difference from last year. They looked good last night, should serve notice around the league.

Tonight's Habs-Wild game should be great, it's Koivu vs. Koivu.....

Couldn't believe the Leafs won against NJ. Aren't they rebuilding?

Great game tonight between Montreal and Minnesota with Les Canadiens winning 2-1 in St. Paul

I think the Wild might have outplayed the Habs but the Montreal penalty kill and Price in net were on top of their game. Hopefully these teams will get a chance to play again this season.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Man it was close, the Habs had to kill off 10 penalties! The one agains Hamrlik was so bogus. He hardly touched him, Carbo was livid. Lang missed a breakaway and Plekanec had some chances. Minny came close at the end. Thought they would tie it up. Still kind of puzzled to see Miko Koivu blew a gasket at the end against the mild mannered Andrei Markov. Didn't know he was sporting the C, but I guess there is a rotation and he has it this month. A good, solid game though.

Looks like first overall draft pick Steve Stamkos has busted loose for Tampa Bay with a couple of goals and an assist. Nice to see as I heard all kinds of horror stories about coach Melrose's indifference to him with limited ice time.

Well the Rangers won, Zherdev looks grat again. The Avs are having problems tonight.

Wow, so many games on Thursdays.

Red Wings playing the Sharks tonight after playing the Ducks last night. That has to be one of the toughest back-to-back games a team will play all season; especially considering they're both on the road.

Thursdays rule for hockey....Great games everywhere.

Zherdev amazes me more and more every game. The skill level this kid has is brilliant. Awesome, wide open game tonight. Non-stop end to end action and yet another victory for the Blueshirts.

Another exciting high scoring game in Anaheim tonight. Vancouver beats the Ducks 7-6 in a shootout.

Anaheim was up 2-1 after 1 period
Score was tied 5-5 after two as both teams went nuts
Vancouver scores early in the third with Anaheim tallying the tying goal with less than a minute to go in the game

After a scoreless overtime the game went to a shootout with the Canucks scoring 2 to The Ducks 1 but it took 13 rounds/26 shooters to finally get the winning goal scored by Mattias Ohlund.

Most amazing thing I feel is with all the goals Vancouver scored neither of the Sedin twins got a point. No goals and no assists.

Last night was one of the worst third periods I have ever seen in my life by the Blueshirts....5 goals allowed in less than 6 minutes. I almost put my TV through a wall.

Some comeback for you Riptide. At least you and xchazx had an enjoyable evening....how's Marty by the way?

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

80'sRocked, was there something in the water last night? A full moon maybe? Not so good for NY based teams last night. I have to admit I was changing the channels when the Isles were up 4-1, I was seeing the Rangers were up 2-0, and I was watching that incredible NCAA Texas-Texas Tech game/ I flipped back when the Habs made it 4-2 and watched on in amazement when they took the lead 5-4. Some game. I was shocked the Rangers gave up that many goals, I still haven't seen the recap of that game, but 80'sRocked I probably would have damaged the TV set as well.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Marty won't play tomorrow night against Buffalo, guess he will have that elbow looked at.

And 80'sRocked those Leafs got a tast of their own medicine tonight when they gave up aboout 4 goals late to lose 6-4 to the Hurricanes. I guess no lead has been safe lately in the NHL.

Did anyone hear the Caps Alex Semin talking about Sidney Crosby? He's saying he's a good skater and all, but he doesn't know what all the fuss is about. He thinks Chicago's Patrick KKkane is a much more interesting player. Hmmm, the next Caps-Pens game could be a doozy.

I caught some of the NYR Tor game on Saturday. I got up during the 2cnd and was doing some work....didn't believe what I was hearing in the 3rd. 80's Rocked...I actually thought about you during the game...I was thinking "Oh I bet things are not going well in his beck of the woods".

If it would have been the Avs...my tv would be destroyed....Anyone seen the new center ice commercia?

I'm so sick of that CenterIce commercial. Since the season has started I've seen it probably 1000 times already. At every commercial break on centerice they show that one and considering how much I flip through the games I've seen more commercials than I normally would.

I bet. That was the first center Ice commercial I have seen this year though.

as if the devils season couldn't get any f*****g worse, paul martin didn't skate today and the devs called up anssi salmela to take his place.

i'm so gald we have an ahl defense and a backup goalie going tonight against a high scoring BUF team.

now if i find out marty is going to be out for a significant amount of time i'm going to go on a kill crazy rampage.

f**k my life right now.

I always think of all you guys too when I'm watching your teams. It's great that we have such a vast group of fans on here....makes the season more fun.

xchazx, your team seems to be doing pretty good considering all that. I don't think you have too much to be worried about. Once they are healthy and playing to their full potential, it will even get better. This whole Eastern Conference is the best I've seen it in awhile.

As far as Crosby....I can't stand this kid. He is a big immature/baby/whiner/conceited/c0cky kid. I'll take Ovechkin or even Malkin over him any day.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

I can't even get the Devils-Sabres game on TV, it's not on my cable plan which ****es me off. Too bad about the Devil's injuries, the Sabres are high scoring this year and are going to be dangerous.

I'm thinking of you guys as well and your respective teams, it does make the season a lot more fun. Playoff time will be intense. I just wish we could have had a Rewind hockey pool or something, but it's complicated being in different time zones, etc.

Crosby does frustrate me with his yapping to the refs, I guess he gets hacked a lot and he's a target. I seem to recall Gretzky used to yap too when he was in his early years. Crosby's got mad skills though, when he's on, he's a pleasure to watch.

He has skills....he has a long way to go before I will put his name anywhere near Gretzky though.

Posted by Toxic Sammy Hain (Member # 3150) on :

Comparing anybody to Gretzky is just being unfair to that person. There will only be one Gretzky.

One thing you have to remember about Crosby and his yapping is that he is the Penguins' captain and that's part of his job being the captain.

The kid is an awesome talent and you have to remember just how young he still is. Someday they'll be making unfair comparisons to him.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

It is unfair to compare anyone to Gretzky, his stats are just too mind boggling to digest. 5 200 point seasons, more career assists than someone has points. The only one I've seen who came the closest was Mario Lemieux as far as dominance goes. Crosby's young but he's playing in such a different era where the goalies are better, less goals against, mind you Ovechkin had 65 goals last year. Crosby also has to deal with having losing key players after only a few years, where as Gretzky and the Oilers could keep their good players for years. When all is said in done, do you think Crosby or Malkin will have the better career? There were points last year where Malkin was carrying the Pens while Crosby was hurt that made things interesting. How long will two franchise players on one team last?

The Devils got shutout by the Sabres. Just saw the highlights.

What did all of you think about Dallas's shenanigans against the Bruins on the weekend? Steve Ott and Avery really pushed the envelope. Modano even criticized them by basically saying if they are going to do that crap then he wants an off-ice front office job. Brett Hull has to get Avery under control, otherwise that team is in trouble. There's talk of them getting Mark Parish to play with Brendan Morrow and get some secondary scoring.

Posted by Toxic Sammy Hain (Member # 3150) on :

Ott and Avery were an embarassment. I was watching parts of that game with the Bruins announcers and they weren't being too kind to Ott and Avery. They were comparing them both to Morrow also of Dallas who is a physical player and accumulates a bunch of penalty minutes every season saying that at least Morrow will face you like a man and doesn't resort to the cheap stuff.

Give me tough guys like Laraque and Boogaard who will fight no questions asked but they won't go after an opponents skilled players.

You're probably correct Sam....it's more a personal thing with me and Crosby. We play the Pens alot, so I see his attitude. that's what turns me off with him.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Did something happen last year with Jagr and Crosby? I seem to recall some sort of thing. Crosby has had a few running battles with some star players over the past few years. He had something going with Kovalchuk one time, doing a lot of yapping. And always fireworks when Malkin and Ovechkin go head to head, really don't think they like each other.

Even Don Cherry who likes the rough stuff didn't have kind words for Avery. He said he can't stand the fact that he picks his spots like that. 80'sRocked, what did you really think of him when he was a Ranger?

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

xchazx I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this will go down as Black Tuesday with Devil fans. Maybe you heard already heard, but Marty Brodeur will be out 3-4 months with torn ligaments. Not sure how good Kevin Weekes is, but maybe he can pull a Ty Conklin when he kept the Pens alive last year when Fleury was hurt. Maybe they can dig Ray Emery out of Russia, Hasek might be out there too.

Posted by Toxic Sammy Hain (Member # 3150) on :

uuggghhhhhhhhhhh I have Brodeur on one of my fantasy teams. Good news is that somebody else has him in my other three leagues.

yes, he's going under the knife on Thursday will be out 3-4 months but they're saying that it's not a career ending injury.

Posted by 80'sRocked (Member # 6979) on :

That is a HUGE hit for the Devils. I guess I have to take back my earlier words to my buddy xchazx about everything being alright.

I must admit that I liked Avery on my team. He is an a-hole, but I didn't want to see him leave. It's always different when they're on your team. The crap he has been pulling this year is way over the top and out of line. He wasn't this bad on the Blueshirts.

Posted by xchazx (Member # 7158) on :

heard about what?

 -

devils don't have the cap room to add anyone. plus marty is supposedly coming back so lou won't go after khabi or emery or anyone since we'll still have weekes and he won't want to waste cap space on an extra goalie.

it's been great chatting with you guys, i'll see you next season. this season is over.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

C'mon man, the Devils still got some good players. Zach Parise is emerging as a potential superstar, they just have to get Elias and Gionta going. Maybe Weekes will surprise some people.

EJ hwat's going on with your Avs? Are almost getting scored on as much as the Dallas Stars? Just got a look at Ian Laperrier's nose, man it's taken some hits, it's almost sideways.

Riptide, I can't really talk about the Avs right now. Whenever I do I throw up a little in my mouth. We have lost four in a row. Doesn't make for pleasent evenings at my house. Yeah Laperriere has what I like to call the S nose. He spends a lot of time in the box. Sometimes they mic him up and you can listen to him when he fights. They did that last season during a game with the Rangers. It was probably one of the best games I had seen in a long time.

Posted by 80'sRocked (Member # 6979) on :

Oh yeah....I can't forget Laperriere. We had him for awhile....loves the box. Sorry about those Avs. It's been a rough start.

Rip....Gomez and Drury have been coming on better of late. Started slow, but looking better every game. Drury actually was leading in scoring chances and shots on goal for awhile there, but couldn't get anything to go in. The town where he is from is very close to where I live....he is a hero there naturally.

Rumour has it that the Blackhawks might be dealing Khabibulin and his huge salary to the Devils to help fill the void left by Brodeur's injury. Chicago signed Huet to a huge contract during the offseason so right now they have too much $$$$$$ going to the goalie position and not enough ice time to go around to satisfy either. Also sounds like the Blackhawks might be willing to not ask for much back in return as they're more than happy to unload the Buhlin Wall's huge salary.

i wouldn't put too much faith in that rumor. as a long time devils fan, i know that if you've heard about a rumor it's probably not going to happen since lou almost demands privacy. and if weekes plays well it works in lou's favor to try and get a little more from CHI since they are desperate to move him and right now the devils are the only team that realisticly wants or needs him.

plus, lou has faith in weekes. he may try to sign someone to backup weekes, like roloson. otherwise, unless he totally collapses, weekes will be the man.

the only way i would ever accept khabi from CHI is if they threw in one of their young defensemen, like cam barker, who has been rumored to be on the block. they are desperate to move khabi because they want to put a bid in for sundin but they can't with khabi's contract. if they want to go after sundin, give us barker and i'll let khabi backup weekes.

Cricket has just started here, our Test team is in India right now. Cricket runs usually from November through til March.

Did anyone here the trouble Jerry Lewis just got in over cricket? Someone in an interview asked him about it, and he said it was a "fag" game. All sorts of people are getting up in arms about it, saying he's homophobic and that he's another Michael Richards, but I dont' really care. I mean, the guy is 150 years old, we can't expect him to change his ways. And as one of those "fags", if I don't care, then no one should!

The Ducks have really stepped it up, to make matters worse they have been talking to Sundin. A bit surprised their high draft pick Bobby Ryan still isn't with the team. Hey xchazx, he hails from Camden, NJ, and he's on the farm, Lou is licking his chops maybe.

i didn't know ryan wasn't with the big team. wasn't he on the team when they won the cup? he was supposed to be a big time power forward.

they must like those jersey guys, parros is also from jersey, princeton i think.

Ryan was no #2 overall in the entire draft. I don't know if it's a situation where he wants to be with another organization or something, but it's baffling. Mind you Getzlaf and Corey Perry are looking like the sky is the limit. That 2003 entry draft is looking like the best crop of players ever. When you look at the names your mind will melt. Parise, Phaneuf...the list goes on.

Already there is some controversy from last night's Wild-Lanche game. Nick Schultz ia saying that Darcy Tucker was going after his knees and stated that to him several times. I'm just glad Tucker is playing in another division, I always hated when he played the Habs. Going to try and find on youtube of that hit Kovalev gave him a few years ago. Too sweet.

Posted by xchazx (Member # 7158) on :

ryan, getzlaf, and perry should all be real good. they also had penner before EDM scooped him up.

i haven't seen the hit, but i heard mike richards from the cryers laid somebody out last night.

darcy tucker is a douche. thankfully he and avery are out west.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

I saw it, there was an Ottawa player that came in on the Philly net, he paused in front of the goalie to do some fancy stickwork and Richards hit him from behind sending him flying into the net. No penalty either. Richards is feisty, beut he's going to hurt someone. I'm just glad they sent Steve Downie to the farm this week, no there's a guy out to hurt.

Looks like GM Brett Hull was the only one who wanted Avery. Already there is a bunch of dissension in the Dallas dressing room, they don't like him either. Surprise, surprise.

Did anybody see that goal by Miroslav Satan last night? been trying to find it on youtube but no luck so far.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Didn't see, but heard of the Satan gosl. Apparently it was some crazy hand-eye coordination feat. The kind where you would practice it for ages in practice and not be able to duplicate it.

Anyone see that hit put on the Leafs Jason Blake by the Bruins? The guy sent him over the boards into the Boston bench.

Habs-Blue Jackjets 1-1 tie thus far. Wouldn't you know it, Umberger picking up where he left off in the playoffs by getting the first goal.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

What a bummer, The Habs tie the game with 40 seconds left and get to the shootout and lose to Columbus! I realise Halak doesn't play much, but he didn't look too great on some of those goals. You have to have Kovalev and Koivu as your first two shooters. The schedule has been screwy of late, a 6 day gap between games didn't help. I just hope they can take it to those pesky Leafs tomorrow night. Leafs-Habs is like Devils-Rangers in these parts. They hate us and we hate them.

That should be a great game Ripper. I think your team will be alright....they did steal that point!

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

The Habs are down 1-0 and not playing too well, too many dumb penalties, they are lucky to be down only one considering all the time they were on the PK. I actually hope they lose tonight, they need a wakeup call, too much half-a#$ed play, and squeaking by with points they barely deserve. I'm thinking about skipping the rest of the game and going to see this band I like at a club.

and we have clemmenson in goal.

thankfully the giants are on tonight so i won't have to watch this debacle.

So did I after that rookie season.

Who the heck knows? This year, he hasn't been playing much. There have been tons of rumors that they are trying to move him. I must say though, when he is playing that night....he gives 100% all the time. It's not from his lack of effort.

With the exception of Zherdev and Lundqvist, I'm noticing the Rangers aren't having much luck with Europeans such as Jagr, Nedved, even Marcel Hossa, and the untimely and tragic death oftheir draft pick in Russia not long ago.

Posted by 80'sRocked (Member # 6979) on :

Yeah Ripper....Jagr had that one big year with 54 goals in 05-06, but alot of Euro's struggle here. I don't know if it's the pressure of NY or what. They sure have the talent and skills.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Very well could be. NY has a pressure cooker atmosphere, it must have been bad for Jagr to leave. So looks like Kevdugup's Oilers found a way to win in the SO. I see Drury got his 6th, I'm hoping he has a good year since he's in my pool. Would love to see hime get above his career high 37 goals and 93 points he had in Buffalo.

I watched the Capitals-Lightning game tonight. Theodore isn't even playing in nets, it's Johnson and he's doing good. The Caps scoring seems to be more concentrated this year, Ovechkin doesn't seem as dominant, but was relieved to see him get his 3rd goal near the end of the game.

Posted by Toxic Sammy Hain (Member # 3150) on :

Don't worry about Ovechkin he'll be up around 50+ goals before the season is over. Don't have him in any of my leagues since I didn't have an early enough draft pick to even have the chance of drafting him. But I am trying to swing a trade for him in a couple of my leagues hoping that his owner is one of those that panics too early in the season and will trade a slow-starting superstar for somebody off to a fast start.

Congrats on this one Kevdug....great game though. At least we got a point after being down 2-0.

High scoring game at The Joe tonight. A rematch of last years Stanley Cup participants Pittsburgh vs Detroit. Detroit had two goal leads on quite a few occasions but let the Penguins sneak in there and take the game to overtime in which the Penguins pulled off a big victory on the road coming away with a 7-6 victory. Jordan Staal was the BMOC as he netted a hat trick in the third period and getting a helper on the game winner.

Best part is I benched Penguins goalie Marc Andre Fleury on my fantasy league tonight. Granted he would have picked up a W for me but his Goals Against Average and Save Percentage would have been a killer.

That Pens-Wings game was nuts! I couldn't get this game on TV which was a downer. Sid had a decent game.

Habs looked better tonight in the Sens-Habs game. Glad they kicked Rutuu out of the game. Couldn't stand him when he was was the Pens. Price had a solid game. I think EJ's Avs play the Canucks tomorrow, will Luongo's shutout streak continue?

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

A period to go and Luongo's shutout streak continues, we'll see if he can hold on....

Posted by Toxic Sammy Hain (Member # 3150) on :

Luongo's streak ended early in the third period as Stastny was able to put one behind him. But other than that he was lights out through overtime as Budaj was matching him save for save with him only giving up a penalty shot to Pyatt. Avs win the shootout 2-1 and the game 2-1.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

A real goalie's duel, some sensational saves. Budaj on one of the Sedin twins has to be seen to be believed.

Looks like Rangers took care of the Devils 5-2.

I was waiting for someone else to mention it before I commented. I don't want to make my buddy xchazx more miserable than it seems he already is with his team.

Good win however....I must say. Rangers owned the second period. Zherdev with 2 goals was great. Some fisticuffs as well, always makes for an enjoyable watch.

this season is already in the sh***er. there are too many holes on this team to overcome, especially with the injuries. weekes proved why he is a good backup and not a regular, and i'm not even including the two 5 on 3 goals he gave up.

i'm not even asking for wins right now, just be competitive. that 2nd period was a disgrace.

other than rolston, parise, martin, and broduer, this whole team can get shipped out. let's start over.

Budaj finally has a good game and I miss it. Hockey is not a big thing here where I am at right now. I had to catch smalls clips of it on the net. Maybe I should just not watch, I think they do better that way.

Something tells me it's going to get chippy tonight when the Habs face Boston. The suspended Kostopolous we could use tonight, he tends to play well against the Bruins.

You can count on that for sure Ripper. Habs/Bruins is always a train wreck waiting to happen. Sit back, and enjoy the show!

Posted by Toxic Sammy Hain (Member # 3150) on :

Bruins put a thumping on the Habs tonight. The Habs are really really good in about 80-85% of their games but when they're bad they're really bad.

Another nice game for the Wild tonight and a shutout for Bakstrom with a 4-0 whitewashing of the Coyotes. Zidlicky finally showed promise of the money he signed for in the offseason.

A team that's starting to show some promise is the LA Kings. Some good young talent there who I feel could use the stabilizing force of a veteran netminder. Khabibulin perhaps? They have some good young offensive talent that looks like they're starting to grasp the concept of defense. Probably not a playoff team this season as the west is pretty loaded but a team to keep your eye on for the future.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

My god, a train wreck is right. Habs have some Jekyl and Hyde thing going this year, Sam you nailed it. At times during the game I could barely believe what I was seeing, not skating, sloppy defensive play, no heart , no passion. How can you not get up for this great rivalry? Milan Lucic had another great game, he flattened Kovalev and pounded Komisarek in a fight, scored a goal, a wrecking crew. Laraque was a non-factor. I don't know what to say, maybe there's some good bars in Boston. That kind of soft play is not going to fly when Philly comes to town Saturday.

Toronto won another one, Grabovski has 8 goals now! He was included as a throwaway for the Habs to negotiate with Sundin fer pete's sake. Might come back to haunt the team like giving up on Ribeiro.

The Penguins are impressing me with the way they are coming back and winning against some good teams.

LA has had some good young players for a while like Kopitar and Dustin Brown, we really don't get to see them much, but they are due to at least make the playoffs again. Phoenix has some good young players too.

Stellar mousepad Sam. Looking fierce!

Komisarek won't be playing tomorrow, he got injured in the fight against Lucic. I just hope he ddin't lose his mojo after losing badly in that fight. We beat them in every regular season game last year, but the Bruins-Habs rivalry looks to be reignited as never before. When the Bruins come to the Bell Centre on the 22nd, fireworks are going to happen.

This was some night of hockey....wow. I wonder if it is a full moon. Sam, that third period in your game was awesome, I was able to watch almost all of it after my game was over....we were down 2-0 after 2 periods(again), and I was just praying for 1 point. Lundqvist stands on his head in the third and OT and Drury wins it in the shootout. Another steal.
I saw a bunch of your game too xchazx. Ovechkin is coming on strong of late. Ties it with 1 second left, I couldn't believe it. Nice win though for you guys.

Looks like Riptide and buffalo-girl didn't fair so well. I was rooting hard for Buffalo tonight as I can't stand Pittsburgh. Malkin is unbelievable and is still better than Crosby IMO.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Great games is right, I just finished watching the Avalanche-Pilers game, the Avs tied it 2-2 with seconds left, and won it in a SO.

A tough loss for the Habs, just not playing well, and losing the the Flyers is enfuriating. Didja see Hartnell knock the net off the moorings when the puck was near the goal line. He's the one I hate most, Mike "cheap shot" Richards is a close second.

So the Malkin vs. Crosby debate continues, I have to check those higlights.

Posted by 80'sRocked (Member # 6979) on :

So EleanorJune joins the list of winners from last night....must have been some finish. Riptide, I didn't see any of your game last night, but you don't have to mention Richards more than once to me. I can't stand him or that whole team. They've always played that dirty hockey.

1. Ovechkin
2. Malkin
3. Crosby

That's my order for these three as of now....may change one day. What do you all think?

hey thanks for routing for buffalo i hate pittsburg too lol i thought we were gonna win until the end of the 2nd. period bummer we lost both games friday and saturday hopefully we will come back and win wednesday night dee [Roll Eyes]

Buffalo and Boston losing is good for the Habs, I just hope they get their head screwed on right for St. Louis tonight. The highlight of last night's game was Laraque pounding some hapless Flyer. Komisarek is out for a week though. Bogus.

Your player rankings are pretty spot on 80'srocked
It's a bit tough with the Malkin and Crosby debate because they are playing together. And their point total will be linked. But just when you write off Crosby he will have some 6 point game. But Ovie is heating up which is good because Semin is out with an injury.

My mom's boyffirend is a huge Rangers fan, and I asked him and he didn't even know what was going on with Peter Prucha.

Prucha is a mystery for sure. He rarely plays for one and it seems they have no idea what to do with him. There have been rumors of moving him....but where, or what they can get for him....who knows? If they could get rid of him, I'd love to get another defenseman called up from Hartford. They are only carrying 6 defenseman right now and Rozival is playing the worst ever in his career and I think can use a few games on the bench to straighten his head out. He turns the puck over almost every time he touches it....lead to another shorthanded goal last night.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

They might even release Prucha the way it's going, or he might join Jagr in the russian hockey league. How is Redden working out on the blueline? Is he earning his money?

that devils game saturday night was maddening, and i only saw the first two periods due to it being movie night and my wife putting her foot down.

if i had seen ovie score with 1 second left i would have killed somebody. i can't believe the devils won in the shootout because it was 3-3 after two and i thought if the game went to a shootout the devils would stand no chance with the caps offensive firepower and clemmer in goal. he held his own though and i'm just thankful to get those two points.

rumor of the devils getting khabi and cam barker in a three way trade with CHI and SJ, maybe involving john madden. i found out it was an ecklund rumor so i know it's not true, but it was intriguing.

Say What? You hate Pittsburgh? [Eek!] I love Pittsburgh hockey! I don't really watch anyone else, maybe alittle bit if I'm scanning through the channels. But I did want to come to a Buffalo match in the spring time- the tickets I tried to order are a little bit pricey though, so I'm going to pass! I like hockey waaaay better than football, it totally sucks that Pittsburgh is more for the stupid Steelers than they are for the Pens. They are a "fair weather friend" when it comes to the Pens, but my hubby and I went to games when they weren't doin' too good in the late 90's, early 2000's, and we still cheered them on.

I'm finding this Buffalo-Pittsburgh girl thing intriguing. Who had the name first? Both of you joined this month, are you sure you didn't know each other before?

I watched the third period of the Rangers-Senators game, really low scoring. I watched the OT and shootout and Lundqvist was great. I thought the detestable Jarko Ruutu was going to start a riot when he got a second shot off in the SO. Every game I watch him, he always does these boneheaded things, Ott and Avery are the same.

Wild vs Penguins tomorrow night in Pittsburgh. Should be a good game.

It's about time Ripper....I was wondering when you would comment on my win.

What can I say about King Henrik? He was just as brilliant in the first two periods. I can't imagine where this team would be without him. Got first star again....I've lost track now of how many he won. This team's ability to come back this year is amazing. They could be down 4 goals and I still believe they can come back. It's been many years since I've felt this way about my team.

Ruutu is a complete a-hole. How classless was that? Mara and Orr were going to beat the crap out of him at the end of the game. I can't wait for Saturday's rematch. I hope he gets thumped!

Minnesota picks up a big win on the road in Pittsburgh with a 2-1 victory in a shootout. Overall a snoozefest of a game. The Minnesota goal in regulation was a total fluke and the Penguins goal came ten seconds later. Zidlicky nets the winner in the shootout.

Excellent win Sammy! I was watching and rooting. Sucks for me that Pitt got a point, but glad you guys got the extra one. I didn't think it was a total snoozefest because there was some great goaltending at times and a fight.

Man, there sure is a ton of fighting this year as well as shootouts.

Posted by Toxic Sammy Hain (Member # 3150) on :

It's a shooting gallery in Boston. The game is only 5 and-a-half minutes old and the score is already 3-2 in favor of Buffalo over Boston.

Posted by Toxic Sammy Hain (Member # 3150) on :

The scoring has slowed down some but still the scoring is pretty heavy. 7 minutes left in the second period and the score is now 5-4 in favour of the Bruins over the Sabres.

Thankfully I don't own any Sabre or Bruin goalies on any of my fantasy teams.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

What is going on with Beantown? Never thought I would see the Bruins be this good. This bodes bad for the Habs because we have to play them Saturday night when we retire Patrick Roy's number. Going to be some fisticuffs and then some, although I would prefer the win.

The Rangers-Canucks was on TV tonight. Didn't look impressed with the Rangers. Some brutal giveaways by Redden, Roscival and Dubinsky. They were booing Redden at MSG, and Lundqvist pulling himself out of the game is something I've never seen in all my years. Too bad, w/o the blunders could have been a close 3-2 game.

Sam, the Wild are doing good w/o Gaborik, does this mean he's expendable? All kinds of rumours floating around again.

Posted by Toxic Sammy Hain (Member # 3150) on :

Nothing will happen with Gaborik while he's still on the shelf, just my opinion. But I agree they're proving they don't need him so I'd say they should trade him before he becomes a free agent and get some good solid depth.

What a night for scoring only three games palyed and 30 goals scored

Boston 7 Buffalo 4
Vancouver 6 New York Rangers 3
Washington 6 Anaheim 4

Lunqvist will pull himself when he knows he's not sharp that night. The giveaways have been common though all year....this defense needs alot of work.

All is not good in Hab-land. Down 2-1 to Ottawa, sloppy play, the fourth line with Begin and Kostopolous are carrying the team while the multi-millionaires flounder(Kovalev and co.)They don't have good pointman on the powerplay, Markov misses the net almost every time. EJ, baffled with all that firepower the Avs can get shut out. Stastny, Svatos, Smyth,Sakic, Hedjuk, they are stacked. Seems the Flames have their number. Didn't realise Luongo wasn't even playing last night, the back up won for Vancouver. Koivu jr. is having a good season, but I'm seeing that they need som Gaborik goals. As for Buffalo, Ryan Miller should rebound from a very un-Miller like performance last time.

This Rangers/Ottawa game today was very tough to watch. Total domination by The Senators, a team who hasn't won in the last 6 games. That's 2 terrible games in a row for the Blueshirts....luckily, Pitt lost as well. I'm starting to get nervous now that this will progress further. I hope that I am wrong.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

The Senators had to win eventually, they played well against the Habs Thursday, it was a matter of time busting out, unfortunately it was against your Rangers.

I just watched the ceremony for retiring Patrick Roy's number. Just amazing, seeing Roy sport the CH jersey again after the nasty split from the team in 1995. He was the goalie I followed most growing up, if it wasn't for him, the Habs wouldn't have won the Cup since 1979. But the Bruins are going to be tough to beat tonight.

Posted by Toxic Sammy Hain (Member # 3150) on :

Right now I don't see anybody stopping San Jose. The Sharks are flying on all cylinders. They're getting good scoring from their top two lines, scoring from their D, good defensive play and good goaltending from both Nabby and Boucher. Granted they'll have a tough road in the West from Anaheim and Detroit but at this point and time the Sharks should be the favoured team to be hoisting Lord Stanley's chalice.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

I thought the Sharks should have done much better the past few years in the playoffs. They can never really put it all together, I just hope they can beat Detroit and get to the finals. I think Dan Boyle is doing well for them.

80'srocked, I saw the Sens-Rangers Highlights, man did the Rangers ever give it to Ruutu. Mara and Colton Orr went after him, but he will skate away instead of dropping the gloves. As yellow as they come.

The Habs kept it close but sadly lost to Beantown in the Shootout. Kovalev continues to be an enigma, more talent than anyone, but bothered by something. Did you see Laraque talking to Lucic all night? Lucic knows he's out of his league, too chickens$*t and won't drop his gloves. Komisarek is out a month because of him.

Posted by Toxic Sammy Hain (Member # 3150) on :

Lucic hurt his hand in Friday night's game. But Laraque would have probably schooled him. Laraque is about the only guy who I've seen that can beat Boogaard of Minnesota.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Lucic scored a goal too, looking like a future Habs killer like Cam Neely used to be like. Laraque qas almost begging for someone to scrap with, with no takers understandably. Did you see Jody Shelley and Donald Brashear go at it tonight? A real doozy. The Wild lost to the Blues in a close one. This Mason guy for the Blues came out of nowhere in nets. Looks like Luongo got hurt tonight, but the Canucks still beat the Penguins. New Senators and Kings uniforms seen tonight as well.

Posted by Toxic Sammy Hain (Member # 3150) on :

Lucic is going to be a big star. I think the Neely comparisons are very accurate. Both are LW for the Bruins and both have great toughness and a good scoring touch as well. I'm going to start naming Lucic, Seabass Jr.

Mason has been with the Predators for the past few years. Was always a capable backup for Vokoun there and was given the chance to be the number one guy last season but dropped the ball and let Ellis take the number one spot thus making him expendable.

The Mason to watch out for is the youngster in net for Columbus.

The Sharks also unveiled a new jersey tonight as well and it looks VERY sharp.

Good one Sammy! That cracked me up. [Big Grin]

One thing I can't stand is when these chicken sh*ts like Ruutu and many others, start crap on the ice and then run and hide when someone confronts them. I knew Orr and Mara were gonna gun for him yesterday....and he ran.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Don't forget Lucic is a fellow Vancouver native like Neely. Kessel is blossoming too, starting to remind me of Pat Lafontaine. Bruins-Habs is going to be the best rivalry going. Tim Thomas has one of the most ugly, unorthodox styles I've seen in a goalie, but he gets it done.

What's worse is Rutuu has a brother for Carolina who plays the same way. How did this hellspawn happen? Was giving the Habs fits when they played the Hurricanes last week.

Rangers got back on track tonight, though they were playing Phoenix. A win they had to have. Dubinsky finally scored, ending a 14 game drought and Gomez is back and added an empty netter. Lundqvist looked sharp too.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Brutal game last night, Habs rookie defenseman Ryan O'byrne scored on his own last night with the game almost over and up 2-1 to the Islanders.

Looks like Claude Lemieux will get a tryout with the San Jose Sharks. Hasn't played since 2003, so this should be interesting.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Too many good games tonight. Lots of scraps, great goals. Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin, Naslund all had great games. First off, the Rangers-Lightning game was nuts, Zherdev and Stamkos scrapping? You gotta be kidding me, a nice scrap with Orr and Koci, Koci actually looked like he won that one. That Naslund-Zherdev-Dubinsky line is on fire.

The Habs played their best game of the season versus the Red Wings. Still scratching my head considering how awful they have been of late. Plekanec and Higgins needed to start scoring again. A bit concerned about Tanguay leaving the game in the first period.Franzen's goal for Detroit was amazing, how do they keep finding talent like this?

A tough one for the Wild against Dallas, a rare goal for Owen Nolan.

Ovechkin was on fire tonight, holy moly! I just hope he's not too explosive against the Habs on Friday. Wouldn't you know Malkin would match him in point production tonight. They are so competitive towards each other. Just a great hockey night.

I only saw the Rangers game tonight....I had too much going on. What a game though. Scraps all over, it was awesome. Zherdez was a big surpise dropping the gloves. Nas had a heck of a game.

Can't say enough about Ovechkin. I told you he is the best in the game right now, and probably will be for the next 10 years. Malkin's brilliant too.

The Habs will start Halak tonight vs. Washington. Might be a mistake, as I can see Ovie giving Halak a nice sunburn with the red light going on. Price will star tomorrow vs. Buffalo.

Another nice shootout victory for us last night, though I'm getting sick of the late goals we are giving up in the third periods. Thank goodness we have Henrik....he saves our defense nightly!

Bummed about last night's 3-0 stinker vs. the Caps. This Jekyl and Hyde thing is getting tiresome. They are leading in the Sabres 3-2 in the 3rd, let's see if they can hold on.

Just saw the Pens-Devils highlights, looks like the Crosby show is back with full force. I saw his moves and goals, he's got mad, mad skills.

Posted by 80'sRocked (Member # 6979) on :

I watched a good chunk of the Devs/Pens game myself. Pretty much what I expected. I turned it off after it was 3-0. Crosby was unbelievable tonight. That whole line is something to watch when they are on. The goal Sykora scored was brilliant with the pass work by all.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

I think early in the year, Crosby wasn't 100%, he couldn't turn like he was doing tonight, really used his speed to is advantage, a few nights ago I even think he batted a puck in midair into the net.

Saw the highlights of the Wild-Predators game, man a lot of scraps. The Belak-Boogard one was a doozy. Belak held his own against the Boogieman, something you don't see too often.

Boston ran over Detroit, looking like the new beast of the east. And the Sharks contine their winning ways too. Senators beaten by the Islanders again! Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Disgraceful display today. I can't even talk about it.

Yep, I felt the exact same way when the Habs laid a goose egg vs. the Capitals on Friday night.

the devils have proven they can beat the bad teams and they can't compete with the good ones. which leads to one very mediocre season. which is going to kill my winter after january, when the giants repeat as super bowl champs.

There's going to be some battles this week with the Devils on Saturday and the Rangers in the middle of the week. Xchazx, what's yor take on the Plexico Burress situation? What should the Giants do?

we don't need him. WR is probably our deepest position. hopefully guys like moss and manningham start to see some playing time. i'm not saying he isn't a super talent, but the giants have proven they can win without him.

no barber, strahan, osi, shockey, plax and yet we still keep winning. and i don't think anything will change without plax. i just hope the giants can release him and free up all the money they commited to him.

i don't have the schedule in front of me, but i know the devils have a super tough stretch here for the next 6 or so games. i'm not very optimistic about it, even though i read that rolston and madden could be back for thursday's game. we aren't going to beat any of the leagues better teams with our goaltending.

Looks like the Avs got some badly needed scoring last night against the Wild. Sakic is hurt though.

Playing the Thrashers tonight. Might be a cakewalk at first look, but you never know what Montreal team will show up tonight. The real test will be the Rangers on Thursday night.

I hear that Rip. Lately, I don't know what team will show up either. I'm worried about Pitt tomorrow first.

I watched a chunk of that Avs/Wild game last night. Quite a crazy one. Tons of goals everywhere. Obviously, EleanorJune didn't watch it because the Avs won.

Very unlike Backstrom to give up 6 goals in two periods especially at home. Probably the only time all season that's going to happen. I just hope Gaborik gets healthy soon so the Wild can trade him to help bolster their team and give somebody else a headache.

NHL suspends Dallas Star Sean Avery indefinitely

Wow! This guy is out of control this year. Maybe the time off will clear his head....yeah right. Everytime he opens his mouth, nothing good will come out. Good for the NHL on the suspension.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

I betcha GM Brett Hull is cursing under his breath his decision to sign Avery. The guy needs a muzzle, something to keep in check his self-destructive capabilities. Elisha Cuthbert's a hometown girl too, I hope she has some disses for this chump. And I hope Dion Phaneuf will line him up in some corner of the ice.

As we speak, the Habs are suffering from an incredibly bad meltdown against the Thrashers after cruising in a 3-0 game. I really don't know what team I am watching. It's the punchless Thrashers for pete's sake!

Posted by NiceGuy Sammy Hain (Member # 3150) on :

Some announcers are already speculating that Avery has played his last game as a Star. They're probably tired of doing damage control for this tool all the time and are realizing that he will never change.

Personally I think that might be a little harsh considering the amount of money they're paying him and right now I don't know if anybody else would take a chance on him. I feel Dallas is stuck.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

I finally saw the whole epsiode where Avery is in the lockeroom and he tells the media to come on over, and tells them that it's great to be in Calgary, but what's with his exes(the word he should have said) being with Jarret Stoll(Rachel Hunter) and Dion Phaneuf(Elisha Cuthbert). This should have stayed in the locker room, but the dingbat went out of his way to say it. It's not like he was in a scrum and it came out by accident. They talked to Turco and coach Tippett after and they are sick of his antics too. I mean this is the last thing your team needs when they are trying to recover from this horrific start of the season. Just the way he went out and said this stuff, maybe it's a cry for help. I've seen Theoren Fleury get thrown out the league for not keeping his demons in check, is this similar? The NHL doesn't have a lot of this trash talk out in the open like this , seems more like NFL/Terrell Owens behaviour. Maybe if he the NHL doesn't work out for him, he can be stay in the city and be an Aggo Consultant for Jerry Jones and the Cowboys.

It's amazing though that both those beauties would have given him the time of day. Makes me wish I could have practiced harder on that backyard rink in my teens. LOL. Girls, you had a hot man thread, does Avery...god forbid...do it for you?

Posted by NiceGuy Sammy Hain (Member # 3150) on :

It must be a real joy to be a fan of teams from Dallas you have the Stars with Avery and the Cowboys with TO & Pacman Jones. I'm sure glad that I'm not a fan of either of those two teams.

Looke like the Rangers pulled it out in a shootout against the Pens. Really wish they could have shown this on TV instead of the Atlanta-Ottawa game we got instead. Looking at the Rangers goal scorers tonight, I see Zherdev and.....Peter Prucha with his first, he's alive! Take that milk carton picture down. Tomorrow night it's on versus Habs.

Wild get a 4-0 victory over the Blues tonight. Backstrom with his 3rd shutout of the season. Backstrom is in the same situation contract wise as Gaborik is both could become free agents after this season. My feelings is break the bank for Backstrom but trade Gabby while they still can.

Posted by 80'sRocked (Member # 6979) on :

What a comeback indeed Rip! I was swearing my TV up and down for most of this one. Prucha ties it up late in the third after we were down 2-0. No goals tonight for Malkin and Crosby. It was nice seeing Crosby get knocked on his a$$ a couple times too! Great early fight between Orr and Godard, we score on all three shootout shots, and The King does it again on his end. This game had it all!

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Yeah, I saw Crosby giving some lip service to someone, I think it was Orr. Always chippy affairs. Staal versus Staal too. I watched Atlanta yesterday and tonight, a supreme talent like Ilya Kovalchuk is languishing there. I wonder what his future is? Should be interesting with Gabby, as expected there's a lot of talk here about moving the enigmatic Kovalev. Sometimes I think they take hockey way too seriously in this city. I mean I love the passion, but some fans and media types are really harsh on some of the players.

Tonight's game was a nice surprise, didn't think they would get that many by Henrik. 80'sRocked, I wouldn't be too happy, the Habs fourth liners Begin, Lapierre, even a rookie Agostini worked the hardest and had the best results. They are definetly not in the multimilionaire club. Mind you the struggling Kovalev made a beautiful pass on the 5th goal. When the Rangers made 4-2 going into the 3rd period I almost thought they would tie it and take it to overtime seeing they haven't been closing games that strong. Maxim Lapierre and Peter Prucha was another unlikely scrap. Nice to see Prucha trying to make something happen. A bit let down by the Rangers big guns, Gomez was -4. Naslund with his 10 goals thus far is exceeding my expectations though.

Anyway, glad for the win, next up is Xchazx's Devils on Saturday night.

Hey, check out those cheerleaders in Phoenix. What a concept.

i can only hope we can keep it close enough to come away with a point. we stole 2 pts vs philly last night, which was a nice surprise since we gave up the 2nd goal with 5 minutes left in the game.

glad to have rolston back, he should help out on our absolutely atrocious special teams play.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

The Devils w/o Brodeur are hanging in there. I think there was a long adjustment with coach Brent Sutter, I think players like Elias and Gionta's play suffered because of it. Elias has been hot of late, and Parise looks like he is getting better all the time. Definetly not going to be an easy game tomorrow.

i just read holik will be back in the lineup tomorrow night. we are slowly getting healthy again, and it can't come fast enough for me. we should be getting greene back soon, then we'll just have to try and hold down the fort until marty comes back.

but for some reason sutter is benching rupp and playing pierre luc letorneau leblond, who is essentially our goon. MON is the one team we really don't need a goon for since they aren't a team that plays overly physical. i was surprised he did this. we'll see how it works out.

Very uninspired performance tonight from the Wild who lost a 2-1 decision to Vancouver. They'll need to play much better tomorrow night down in Nashville.

At least it was a close game Sam, as I've seen some good teams get inexplicably blown out the rink of late. But it's tough I guess to lose to a Luongo-less Vancouver team.

I don't understand-you are happy because one of Pittsburgh's leading players gets knocked on his ***? That is the type of behavior that got Lemieux seriously injured back in the 90's. Don't get me wrong- I love a good hockey fight, but not dirty players. I think they tell the opposing players to "go after" Crosby just like they did with Lemieux.

First off....everyone knows that I can't stand Crosby. I have a ton of respect for him as a player and his skill level. The thing I don't like about him is his mouth and c0ckiness. The hits on him that night were clean hits. He also did his share of hitting that night and went after Colton Orr quite alot. It made for a great game. I would never want to see anyone get hurt and I can't stand dirty hockey.

Posted by Pittsburghgirl (Member # 7514) on :

Sorry, I just don'tlike when people get hurt playing. I never found Crosby to be overly ****y (I'm not going to say anyone is NOT ****y, especially when it comes to hockey players) but maybe it's because I am a Pittsburgh fan. But I never did like Jagr when he was here- I thought he was a big baby. I was glad when he left. I'm not everyone- I did not know that you hate Crosby; I'll be sure to get my mindreading cap on soon. I don't have time to read back through 12 pages of this thread.

Posted by 80'sRocked (Member # 6979) on :

I hear ya Pitt. I'm sure alot of my dislike of Sid is because he is so damn good and is a rival of ours. Jagr sure cried his share when he was on the Rangers also. I was the same way with A-Rod when he was not on the Yanks. I couldn't stand him like you don't even know. Now, since he has been on my Yankees....I see him in a whole different light. I have always been like that with players of talent....can't help it.

Posted by NiceGuy Sammy Hain (Member # 3150) on :

It appears that it's pretty unanimous here that we're all against dirty hockey. I'm just curious what everybodys stance on fighting in hockey is?

Personally I'm pro fighting. I feel it's part of the game and I feel it's a neccessity on occasion. Besides without fighting there never would have been a Stu Grimson, Craig Coxe, Bob Probert, Tie Domi, Donald Brashear, Georges Laraque, Derek Boogaard....etc and that would be a shame if the league would never have been graced by their presence.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

I don't mind fighting as long as they are fellow combatants and have some respect for each other. can't stand when I see a good/star player get goaded into a fight by a tough guy, doesn't happen often though. I'm sure passive hockey fans might scratch their heads concerning fighting, but I've seen it used for different purposes where it can turn around the tempo of a game. I've even seen teams getting a shelacking on the scoreboard and a scrap will indicate to the team they can't embarass or run up the score and get away from it.

As expected a low scoring 2-1 OT loss to the Devils, scored by Parise. Kovalev is going to be wearing goat horns in tomorrow's papers getting the penalty that led to the goal and not scoring a goal in his last 17 games.

Posted by NiceGuy Sammy Hain (Member # 3150) on :

Minnesota's offense has gone south. After scoring a whole bunch of goals for a couple weeks they've lost back to back games 2-1 and 1-0. The goaltending has been there but the offense really hasn't looked too good. Hopefully they can fight the ship soon.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Another Boogard-Belak bout, the Wild need some goals, when will Gabby be back?

I wish I could have seen the entire Blackhawks-Red Wings tilt, looked like a heck of a game, Jonathan Toewes had some dazzling goals.

Worried about the Markov leaving after getting a puck in the face, with Komisarek out, there's no way we can lose him for an extended amount of time.

Posted by 80'sRocked (Member # 6979) on :

I'm 100% for fighting in hockey....good, clean fights. It would ruin the game without it. They already made hockey too weak by not allowing more physical play.

I scored some sick tickets for MSG tonight. Right on the redline, near the Ranger's bench. We'll see what team shows up.

You know what Rip, this is really starting to pi$$ me off. I am starting to think it may be time for a coaching change. Renney is always screaming about playing a defensive style lately, but with this defense, how can that work? They always play better with the wide open style anyway. Another short handed goal tonight....number 8 on the year. Kalinin was his usual self with a -2, making him a -15 for the season. They now have given up 13 goals in the last 3 games and scored a total of 2. This is getting rough to watch. It was still great having seats like this tonight. I have never been so close to the action at the Garden before. They were $500 seats that I got at an incredible discount. Was still a fun night in NYC.

Don't want to get your hopes up but Mats Sundin says he is fianlly going to decide mid-December which team he will play for.(Haven't we heard that one before?)The Rangers are one of the teams mentioned, can you believe that the Canucks are still offering 10 million?

So do you think the Rangers need a mre offensive defenseman? Thinking back to the glory days of Brian Leetch and Sergei Zubov.

I will still be shocked if Sundin comes here.

How about a defensive defenseman? I'll take that first. Kalinin and Rozsival have been terrible defensively. They just called up the rookie, Potter. He didn't show too much last night. Girardi and Staal are not bad. Mara is OK....at least he will take the body. Redden?

I was ticked when they let Zubov go years ago. He was outstanding for the Ranger's. Rozsival and Redden are supposed to be the more offensive defensemen....they each have 2 goals. Staal is the only one without a minus rating. He is a 3. Rozsival is -10. Kalinin is -15. Can't win consistently like that. Poor Henrik bailed their a$$es out enough. We'd be a 500 team without Lunqvist. I am getting aggravated with this group and it starts with Renney. Let them play wide open for a while and let's see what happens. It will at least help with the scoring. This defensive crap style won't cut it with a team that is playing shotty defense. Run and Gun!

Marian Gaborik returned to practice today for the first time since his October 15 injury. No timetable when he'll return to playing. This has got to be good news for the Wild; either they'll get that boost to their weak offense or they can finally trade him away and meybe give their team more depth.

One of the better games the Habs played this season. Lang, Tanguay and Kovalev were dangerous all night. When Kovie wants to he can be the most dominant player on the ice.

80'srocked, I agree about the run and gun style. Drury and Gomez can put up more points than they have been.

although i'll gladly take the win, i'd like to get a couple more of these before i get too ****y. one regulation win in almost two years isn't the time to start bragging.

this had to be the craziest game all year in the nhl. this game just wore me out. i don't know where to begin. bad officiating, fights, hits, goal scoring, getting big leads, losing big leads. this game had it all. i was emotionally drained at the end.

i just hope we have something left for BUF tomorrow. i can see the devils having a big letdown tomorrow night.

I bet it scared the crap out of you when the Rangers tied it 5-5. Of course, I knew that our crappy defense would give up more goals. What a complete embarassment this defense is. Lunqvist is left hung out to dry every game. 2 More shorthanded goals!!!!! 10 on the year....leads the NHL. Maybe they are trying to break the record. xchazx, you guys are on a bit of a roll right now and you have played 5 less games than us. I am worried now.

LS, you down with the Pens too? Didn't know that.

I can't believe how crazy that Rangers-Devils game was last night, with that game and the Hurricanes-Flyers game earlier this week it was some real firewagon-ne lead is safe hockey. Never would have seen that in the trap era.

The news gets worse for the Habs, Higgins gone 4-6 weeks, Koivu has a leg injury, Price has the flu, and tonight we go up against Ovechkin and the Caps who torched the Senators last night. Merde.

The Wild need to find out how to score again. They've lost the last four games and have only scored three goals over that stretch. Thank goodness that Backstrom has still been tough in the net and the D has been their usual tight selves as they've only given up a total of nine goals over that four game stretch. Right now they need somebody to step up and take charge or just score on some fluke goal and hopefully that will break up this offensive slide.

Right now as of Saturday December 13 2008 at 7:52PM CST my pick for the Stanley Cup Finals is the San Jose Sharks vs the Boston Bruins. Both teams are looking pretty unbeatable at the moment. Both are scoring and neither give up many goals.

It was a rookie goalie with the last name Kharlamov, he's played like 14 professional games. He played well but so did Halak. Did the Wild play tonight?

Wild played and lost this afternoon 3-1 against the Kings out in LA.

Simply amazing is all I have to say. Tonight Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios is playing his first game of the season. Yes the same Chris Chelios who will be turning 46 next month. The man is just a freak of nature and is still a very viable player Pretty awesome to see one of the all time greats still plugging away. He must truly love the game.

Reasons why Hockey is awesome

1. Even though millions more people watch the Super Bowl more people would be able to identify the Stanley Cup over the Vince Lombardi Trophy

2. If you're on the team that wins the Stanley Cup every player gets to hold the cup above their head and skate around the rink in front of all the fans.

3. Every member of the team that wins the Stanley Cup gets the cup for a whole entire day during the off season. Have you ever seen the World Series trophy out in the middle of a lake fishing for Northern Pike?

4. If you're on the team that wins the Stanley Cup you get your name engraved on the Cup.

please feel free to add to this list

What you guys are saying is music to my ears. I agree with all of it. Best trophy in sports hands down. In a perfect world I would clone you in large numbers and get hockey some interest again in the US.

4. A lot of hockey players will give the fans autographs and the time of day. Unlike some jerks in the other 3 sports.

It's official, Sean Avery is no more a Dallas Star. Only problem is Dallas would want someone to pick him up and take on that contract. Would the Rangers give him another chance?

No way....I hope. I really wanted to resign him at the start of the season, but he is far too out of control this year. Would only cause problems in the locker room I think.

So they Sundin has narrowed it down to two teams, the Canucks and the Rangers. Slats met with him on the weekend. The Canucks have cap space, the Rangers would have to do some wiggling. I just hope hockey fans can get some closure this week and Sundin to finally make up his mind!

Looks like Luongo's injury is worst than expected, imagine if Sundin will go to a team without him for a significant amount of time?

Posted by 80'sRocked (Member # 6979) on :

I never even thought there was a chance for the Rangers to get Sundin....now, possibly it looks like. We'll see.

Great game on VS. tonight between Col/Det. Nonstop action. Raycroft was brilliant in goal for the Avs. Detroit made him work his tail off. A couple posts and crossbars helped. Nice penalty shot goal by Leopold too.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

I just hope these two teams know what they are doing. Looks like a lot of cash will exchange hands for basically half a season.

It was a great game with Avs-Wings last night. Reminded me of the mid to late 90's when it was the best rivalry in hockey.

Well it helps that you have the 2 of the three best players in the world on your roster. Malkin and Crosby might be worth the price of admission alone. Any idea when Gonchar is coming back?

The Flames-Wild game is on tv tonight. Taking a good look at both teams. The west is more rugged than the east. There's some tough customers on both teams, checking out players like Kyle Clutterbuck. Looking for Gabby who is supposed to be back tonight, don't see him yet.

They project he'll be back in March. Of course they keep saying Whitney will be back in December but we are still patiently waiting. But at least the Flower will be back in goal tomorrow night. The penguins definitely need a kick in the butt to get going again!

The dang Flyers are on fire and are like a machine (an evil machine, mind you). We need to start winning again to catch them.

I watched a little bit what they did to the Avalanche last night. Scary.

Man, we play Philly tomorrow night, not looking forward to it. Komisarek is expected back tomorrow night, I just hope some of the Philly animals don't test him coming back after an injury. Jeff Carter has 22 goals and Simon Gagne is quietly making a case for comeback player of the year.

Hold the phone Gaborik just tied it for the Wild, did they miss him or what? Should be a doozy finish.

Posted by NiceGuy Sammy Hain (Member # 3150) on :

Yup Wild and Flames are tied 2-2 after regulation. Gabby has a goal and a helper. Overtime about to begin.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

A tough one to lose, isn't it always the case where your player goes in on the goalie and just misses putting it away and then the opposing team goes end to end and they win it. Bertuzzi's first in 19 games to boot. I thought the Flames would be tired with the back to back games, but I was wrong.

Some good hits and scraps. Boogard is a monster, did you see him tussle with Andre Roy?

The Wild are 42 games above .500 with Gabby in the lineup, how can you argue with that?

Surprisingly, my team won the first two games of the west coast trip. They usually do terrible out that way. Big test is Saturday night vs. San Jose.

sundin is going to VAN.

that was the best move for him. the rags would have to have moved too many people around to get him under the cap. i read he was holding out because he was trying to get more money from the rags but i guess they didn't want to have to shake the team up too much to fit him in.

and whenever an athlete tells you it's not about the money, it's usually about the money.

Aint that the freakin' truth! Greed, greed, and more greed. He supposedly said that he would consider going to the Rangers for less money....yeah right. Like I said all along, he will not be a Ranger.

Thank god for some closure with the Mats Sundin thing. Good that he's in the west, because he was a thorn in our side when he was in Toronto. I hate that too when they say money is not a factor, give me a break.

Big win by Detroit against San Jose. Didn't forsee a 6-0 win.

What a game! Buffalogirl, your Ryan Miller played a heck of a highly entertaining game. With games like this, would love to see more Habs-Sabres tilts.

Kovalev has really stepped his game up a couple notches the past week or so. Habs are starting to look pretty good again.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Yeah, we'll see how this holds up, we have Carolina tomorrow night so hoping we finish strong for the holidays and get Koivu and Higgins back in the lineup. 2 for 7 on the powerplay was very encouraging, and struggling players like Kovalev, Latendresse and Sergei Konstityn have been scoring of late. Jaroslave Halak has played strong too in Price's abscence.

What's up with the Leafs? 7-2 win against the Penguins? They might sneak into the playoffs, doing better than the Senators. Never thought they would decline this fast.

Posted by 80'sRocked (Member # 6979) on :

No shock that the Rangers lost last night to San Jose. Especially in San Jose. They have yet to lose in regulation on home ice this year. I'm surprised that the game was even so close.

The Sharks look vulnerable lately, still my choice to get to the finals though.

Anyone able to watch the World Juniors? That's my bag when the tournament starts on the 26th. Nothing like seeing future NHL stars going for gold. You guys get any broadcasted Team USA games?

Disgrace at the Garden tonight. Rangers blow a 4-0 lead and lose 5-4 in OT. Ovechkin proves again why he is the best player in the league. 2 goals, 1 assist, and 13 shots on goal.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

That's a tough loss, Ovechkin has torched us too this season. With a player like that it can be expected. He's worth seeing for the price of admission alone.

Habs and Pens Saturday night. Looking forward to it.

What can I say? My team sucks these days. If Lundqvist isn't the first star of the game, they can't win. How about another SH goal? You got it! The record of giving up 18 in one season is more than imminent of being broken this year. Only 8 more to give up....they will find a way. Time for Renney and his defensive system to hit the road. This group can't play or win like that.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

I agree with the Rangers reverting back to the run and gun system. They have enough good offensive players that they should at least out score the Devils.

The Blackhawks are beating the Wild 3-0, are rapidly becomeing the best young NHL team in the league. Just think if they didn't have so much money tied up in their two goalies?

Posted by 80'sRocked (Member # 6979) on :

Nice to see we can at least beat a farm team these days. Even that wasn't easy though. We'll take the win anyway.

It was exciting....I'll say that. A nice mix of fights, rough stuff and good hockey. They can be an even more exciting team if they were allowed to play that way.

Boston put a thumping on the Penguins tonight.

Can anybody beat the Bruins right now?

Three straight shutouts for Columbus Blue Jacket rookie goalie Steve Mason. Looks like a future star whose time has come already.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

The rookie of the year is going to be between Mason and Blake Wheeler of the Bruins.

Big win for the Wild against the Sharks, Boogard broke Jody Shelley's helmet! Who's this Setogouchi for the Sharks? The guy is lighting it up this year.

I'm hoping on Jan.13th that the Habs will get some revenge on the Bruins for that earlier humiliation 6-1 at Boston Gardens. Carey Price has been sensational of late, and Andre Konstisyn is starting to come on.

I don't know what the coverage is for the World Juniors tournament south of the border, but Canada beat the US 7-4 in a sensational game. Last year was the same, these two teams always put on a good game.

The Winter Classic was exactly that, wish they could do that kind of event more often.

X-chaz's Devils will see some new blood in the Habs lineup tomorrow night. They sent Obyrne and Maxwell down to the farm, and call up Marc Denis, Max Pacioretty, Weber, and Kyle Chipchurra. Some real bad news is that Alex Tanguay is out for 6 weeks. Ouch.

Did you see Crosby gor mental on Saturday vs. Florida? He scrapped and had 21 minutes in penalties! The Pens are up 3-0 versus Atlanta, they are struggling bigtime of late. I wonder how long Therrien will be around?

Did you see Jarkko Rutuu bite Buffalo's Andrew Peters? That was despicable. Better get some rabies shots! [Big Grin]

Looks like I missed a good one tonight between the Bruins and the Wild. Wild win 1-0 with Backstrom getting his 2nd straight shutout.

Went to a high school basketball game tonight at my old high school. Haven't been to one in over ten years. Figured I'd go and see them play since they're ranked #1 in the state right now. They didn't impress me too much yet the won by 30. I think it was more a case that they sucked then my alma mater being that good.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Beating the Bruins does a world of good for the standings in the east, they need to come back down to earth. I heard Boston had the puck in Minny's end all game too. Gaborik out for 10-14 weeks. I'm so glad he is not in my hockey pool.

Posted by NiceGuy Sammy Hain (Member # 3150) on :

Hopefullu Ruutuu gets a healthy suspension. He's always been a disgrace and a pu$$y. If you're going to play the style of game that he does you better be willing to drop the gloves when you get called out on it but he always chickens out. Now if he did indeed bite another player that's crossing a whole new line in cowardice.

Your true goons the ones who you can respect guys like Brashear, Laraque, Boogaard they never go after the skilled players they'll go after the other team's tough guys, drop the gloves, pound on each other for a couple minutes then shake each others hand afterwards or give them a pat on the shoulder.

It's guys like Ruutuu and Avery who give hockey a blackeye.

The last time there were two original six teams was the 78-79 finals between the Habs and Rangers.

Sharks-Bruins is everyone's sexy pick for the finals, but I'm not convinced Boston will come out of the east. And Detroit and Calgary might have an answer for the Sharks.

Nothing like the Habs beating the Leafs 6-1, winning without Price, Koivu, Higgins and Dandenault is impressive. We play Boston on the 13th. That's going to be must see TV.

What a great game tonight between Buffalo and The Rangers. Yeah we lost in a shootout, but that is only because Miller was brilliant in goal. The Rangers out-played and out-shot the Sabres for most of the game, but that's the way it goes sometimes. It was a pretty entertaining game though.

Latest rumblings

Last night Columbus Blue Jackets rookie goalie notched his league leading sixth shutout on the season

Bruins administer another thumping on an opponent this afternoon. This time a 5-1 victory over Carolina.

Penguins lose yet another game today. My gut feeling says that Therrien's head coaching job is skating on thin ice.

Brendan Shanahan to sign with the Devils http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/news;_ylt=As1ZY6gB5UeVWjUvyLm74zl7vLYF?slug=ap-devils-shanahan&prov=ap&type=lgns

Rumour has it that the Habs have made an offer to Tampa Bay for Vinnie Lecavalier. Lightning GM Brian Lawton denies that Lecavalier is on the market.

Could be an interesting situation.

Tons of rumors about Lecavalier.

Blueshirts with 2 wins in a row....could be the start of something I hope. Defense has looked much better in the last 3 games too.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

The city's been buzzing about Lecavalier for the past two days now. I will believe it when see it. Habs fans have been down that road before (Sundin, Shanahan, Briere).

Owen Nolan has played great for the Wild thus far, 10 goals already in not a lot of games.

Pretty depressing losing to Bruins 3-1. Thomas and Chara were amazing for the B's and some dumb penalties cost us.

Sounds like Roberto Luongo is going to play tonight after being sidelined for almost two months due to a groin injury.

Looks like Brian Elliot of Ottawa is another stud rookie goalie to join Mason of Columbus. Considering how terrible the Senators have been between the pipes I'm pretty sure they're going to give him a long look to see if he's the real deal or not.

Shark attacks are I guess a part of life here, when about 90% of the population live along the coast. There are usually a few every summer.
Of course I feel bad for the victims, but I reckon if you're gonna go swimming in the shark's natural environment, it's a risk you have to take.

Still Vinny fever in Montreal right now with all the trade rumours. I am skeptical as we speak, because if it did happen the deal would have happened right now. The longer it drags on and the more speculation means he won't come here. I think it would be wiser to get Boumeister from Florida, but that stuff has been discussed too.

I just finished watching the Pens-Rangers game, man, even thought the Pens won and are struggling more than the Rangers, I can't believe all the money Drury, Gomez and Redden get and how little the team gets in return. I've seen to many games this year where Ludqvist stands on his hide but is hung out to dry. How about Colton Orr going after Crosby and Goddard going after Gomez?

We have a date with your Devils tomorrow night Xchazx. Looks like Price, Koivu and Higgins will be back too. Hope it doesn't upset the chemistry. Andrei Konstityn has been lighting it up of late.

It's going to be a great all star weekend here, don't have tickets unfortunately, but a lot of events planned. Alexander Ovechkin will make it to the city tonight after playing in Ottawa, that will be 5 days he will spend here. If I run into him at any of the city's hotspots will let you know. Apparently he had quite a time once partying with Kovalev and others at a russian restaurant here. Nice to see he looks up to his fellow russian elder statesman Kovalev. Some bad, personal beef must have happened with Malkin and Ovechkin.

The Wild just administered a spanking on the Maple Laffs 6-1. All 6 goals came at even strength so a lot of Laffs had a nasty +/- for tonight's game. Backstrom is without a doubt one of the top 5 goalies in the league.

Amazing game by Tuukka Rask tonight!
A shutout with 35 saves.

Rangers-Boston 0-1.

Don't worry 80's rocked, no shame in losing to the B's 1-0. We have to see them tomorrow afternoon, not looking forward to it, even though we did rob 2 points from the LA Kings today. So this new Bruins goalie Rask is going to make Manny Fernandez expendable?

I just like it when our boys do some damage in the rink.

It sure looked like there was somekind of spell around Rask tonight...

Langenenbrunner has been on fire since the All Star break; three straight games with two goals.

The Devils are becoming a scary team to play right now and a very scary team for the post season. Having a very rested Brodeur going down the stretch can't bode well for the rest of the league.

I can't believe it, the Canucks tied the game 3-3 with the Wild with 16 seconds left. Let's see what OT will solve. A great game!

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Vindicated. They found a way, Mark Bergeron scores the winner in OT.

Canucks outplayed the Wild but Minnesota found a way to win. Canucks first goal of the game was controversial and could easily have been overturned.

That 5 minute major call on Clutterbuck was a joke. He deserved a penalty; maybe even a double minor but giving him a major was the wrong call.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

A lot of people are after Clutterbuck these days. Fighting with the visor and all, seeing Gretzky make those visor motions during his fight with Phoenix, and Don Cherry lambasted him yesterday for taking the visor off after a fight.

It's not fair, Detroit still gets great young player picking at the bottom of te draft.

I'm psyched, Tuesday I get to see my first live hockey game of the year when the Habs play the Pens. Woo!

The season is going down the tubes, our leading goal scorer Robert Lang severed a tendon yesterday, so he's done for the season and maybe his career is over too. Latendresse suffered a nasty shoulder injury. And as If I didn't despise the Bruins enough before yesterday's game.

Posted by Sammy Reign In Blood Hain (Member # 3150) on :

I see the Senators fired Craig Hartsburg as their head coach. Personally I don't think the Seanators struggles are the coaches fault. The front office put too much stock in their one superstar line of Heatley, Spezza and Alfredsson and didn't address glaring weaknesses in the lineup. Their freefall started when they lost Chara to the Bruins and they have never come close to getting a frontline netminder (even though this rookie Elliott looks like he might be pretty decent)

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

The Sens also have a wacky owner who adressed the media last week saying that there would be no changes, no firesale, that the club was fundamentally good. Yeah right. The same guy would say a few years ago that he wouldn't accept anything less than the Stanley Cup which put a lot of pressure on them. Sure they had their bouts with Ray Emery, but their secondary scoring of Vermette, Fisher, Neil, etc, really should be doing better. Getting rid of their defense corps didn't help, dealing Joe Corvo for the slow moving Mike Commodore, getting rid of Mezsaros.

so Riptide, anymore rumblings in the Mount Royal press about Lecavalier getting traded to the Habs?

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

No, the Vinne frenzy has died down considerably. I think a lot of people feel it would have happened by now. Now that Lang is out, there's talk of getting Michael Nylander, but his salary might be too intimidating. There's talk to that they will convert Higgins to a centre, a position he played at Yale. There's a lot of uproar with kovalev's poor play since Koivu has come back and he had to give the C back. Carbo's been fielding questions about it and he looks pretty uncomfortable. Just another winter in the crazy, hockey obsessed fishbowl world of the Montreal Canadiens.

Any reports on Gaborik?

Posted by Sammy Reign In Blood Hain (Member # 3150) on :

last I heard he might return for the last couple weeks of the regular season. Pretty much a lost season for him and with all his injuries making it virtually impossible for the Wild to trade him making it pretty likely they'll lose him to free agency.

My first game this year, nice 4-2 result against the Pens. Seeing pure, uncut NHL in the flesh is such a trip without the commercials and hype.

I see the Rangers retired Adam Graves number, he was quite emotional.

Ottawa gets the same results with a new coach.

Pretty awesome ceremony as usual that the Rangers put on at the Garden for a number retirement. All the greats from '94 were there. Special night.

With that said, of course they lose the game as usual on a ceremony night. They're lucky they even got a point by scoring with 10.7 seconds left in the game to get it to overtime.....which became a shootout and that is where they lost.

They might be playing with fire with that decision, but if he can be an effective player without all the BS, I guess that they are hedging their bets that he will return to form.

february 26th people.

marty's baaaaaaaack.

be scared.

lots of trade rumors going around. i forgot when the deadline is. it should be interesting to see who gets moved for what. i don't see the devils making any move other than another second tier d-man, especially since it looks like colin white may have broken his hand last night. i see the devils going after someone like filip kuba, matthieu schneider, derek morris, or jordan leopold. i also read there is a (dumb) rumor that the devils are interested in either pronger or neidermayer. i just don't see the devils having the pieces to make a move like that.

Posted by Sammy Reign In Blood Hain (Member # 3150) on :

If the Ducks dpn't start making a move soon I could see them moving a lot of their high profile veterans: Pronger, S Niedermayer, R Neidermayer, Selanne and Giguiere

Gaborik is a head of schedule and will be back relatively soon so he still could possibly get traded before the deadline. God I hope.

Stastny is back soon for the 'Lanche and Gonchar will be back soon for the Penguins. Both those teams definitely need them in their lineups in their fight to make the playoffs.

The Devils keep rolling w/o Marty. Tonight they took a chunk out of 80'srocked Rangers 3-0. I wasn't rooting for either, but it's tough going seeing so little offense from Gomez, Drury and co.

The habs horror show continues, a 6-2 loss to the Flames, we're getting blown out of the rink. Absolutely rock bottom, what are the Sharks going to do to us? We might even not make the playoffs......

I am shocked and just a little disturbed by their decision to fire Therrien. He can't help it that the boys don't want to shoot the damn puck instead of pass, pass, passing to each other! I know I haven't visited this thread in so long; the Pens are just an embarrassment this year. I don't know wtf their problem is.

80's rocked, give us a call. Is Renney gone? What's with the Blueshirts? They are calling for Carbo's head here too. And speaking of crumbling seasons, I guess you know the Habs went out and got 39 year old Mathieu Schneider from Atlanta for some draft picks. Since we didn't resign Mark Streit from last year, the powerplay has been bad, so I guess Gainey is trying to get a spark and stop the losing. Hopefully a few more personnel changes before the deadline.

Brodeur is coming back soon. That has to be scary for the rest of the Eastern Confrence. The Devils towards the top in the conference with Marty on the shelf for all this time and him coming back and being rested right before the playoffs.

Posted by xchazx (Member # 7158) on :

yeah, i know sam, i was just being a bit douchey. i don't miss a game.

they have far exceeded my expectations when broduer went down. i was just hoping we would be in a position to make a run at a playoff spot until marty came back.

i'm glad schneider got moved because i didn't want him on the devils. i know monty hall needed a PP qb, but i think he's really declined as far as overall play goes. we'll see if he's able to help them.

i see the devils making only a minor move for a defenseman. i don't much like andy greene so i could see the devils going after someone like leopold or kuba. but with almost all of the teams in the west in some kind of position to make a playoff run i could also see the devils not making any moves at all.

I don't know what else to say?????? This team has freakin' sucked for the last month and it wouldn't surprise me if they blow the playoffs now. I've been calling for Renney's head since the all-star break, but I don't think he's going anywhere. Scoring 1 or 2 goals a game is not going to cut it in this league. I haven't been posting too much here because there's only so much crying I can do! I'm trying to take the high road like my buddy xchazx did when his team was in the Sh!tter and just not post at all. I see he's back now though....understandably.

What are the NY media saying about Renney when they are done talking about 24/7 A-Rod coverage? I just can't believe Chris"captain clutch" Drury is doing so poorly. Gomez is in a huge slump too. Amazing how topsy turvy the season can go, the Habs included. Suddenly Ottawa is back from the dead, and the Devils proved to me they might come out of the east after seeing them beat both the Bruins and Sharks on the weekend. Scott Clemeson is the Ty Conklin of last year, the Devils should try and keep him as Brodeur is getting older and reduce his workload.

As you might have heard, Gainey has spoken and Kovalev has been told to stay home saying he's not helping the team with his poor play. So the speculation is either he is on the trading block and played his last game, or Gainey is trying to light a fire under his a&# and send a message to the rest of the "passengers" on the team. They will have their work cut out for them tomorrow when Ovie and the Caps might carve up the soft defense.

There's like a four way tie for 4th to 8th with 66 points with Rangers, Panthers, Habs and Sabres. This is going to be interesting. Panthers shut out Devils, whodathunk?

It's gonna go down to the wire now for these playoff spots. Should have never happened for us both Riptide. It is all A-Rod around my area right now. He sure made a fool out of himself, but that's for the baseball thread.
Media coverage around here is a joke as far as hockey is concerned. I don't live in The City, but I am only about 30-40 minutes away. New York is a football/baseball city and that's it....Knicks do get some decent coverage though. The tri-state radio stations VERY rarely mention hockey.

Not much yet on the trade front, I see The Islanders got a few draft picks from the Senators in a trade. Wonder who will replace Renney? John Torterella? Or will Sather come back behind the bench?

i read that torts is the guy sather wants. but someone on another board posted this quote from torts:

quote:
Question No. 2: Should the New York Rangers bring back Sean Avery?

John Tortorella: No, and I don't even want to talk about Avery.

dolan's man crush on sather is the only thing keeping him in his job. sather must have some photos somewhere. how they can blame all this on renney is ridiculous.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Torts should be a good fit for the Rangers, he needs to coach in a real hockey market, maybe he can get some of those egos in the dressing room in check. Too bad it was pinned on Renney, those expensive free agents are to blame as well.

The Pens had some potential in the first period, but then they just let the game go. Fleury has been playing too soft/weak lately. I told my hubby I'm calling Ray Shiro so he can go replace Fleury, and he said only if he gets to wear his sunglasses while playing,ha,ha!
Oh,yeah, I guess this loss was all the coach's fault, right? Don't know what Therrien is going to do now. He had sold his house in Montreal, as his kids loved Pittsburgh so much that they really never wanted to go back in the summer to Montreal.

It's about time! They must have finally heard my cries. Renney is a great guy and coach, but his style was not a good fit this year. You have guys with the skill level of Gomez, Drury, and Zherdev, there is no way to play this defensive style. Tortorella would be a great fit here and he won't take crap from anyone.

I also agree with Sather. I could never stand him as the coach either.

if the devils sent weekes down he would had to have cleared waivers and probably would have been claimed. clemmenson was an emergency call up and was not subjected to waivers. i have a feeling clemmer or weekes will get traded for some picks and whoever is left can watch marty the rest of the year.

sam, marty pitching the shutout his first game back was great to see, but i will have to admit he wasn't really tested much. either the devils defense played extremely well, or COL really isn't that good or just didn't seem to care last night. they looked listless the whole game. either way, i think it was a good game for marty to come back to since he had some work but wasn't asked to save the game for the devils. i still think the devils are going to make a move for a d-man, but it will be a small move.

and parise's goal was incredible. that kid is the hardest working forward in the league.

i think with ANA picking up whitney they will move pronger or nieds. i heard on the devils board that maybe nieds won't accept a trade anywhere. we'll just have to wait and see.

and supposedly philly wants bouwmeister really bad but they have cap issues. they are trying desperately to make room just to bring briere back, so they waived metropolit and vananaan(sp). they'd have to move some contracts to get j-bo, supposedly to include lupol and carle and they'd probably have to add a prospect like van riemsdyk.

I don't like this thing with Clemenson, Marty is one of the best goalies ever, but age is not on his side, they should at least keep both for next year. Marty can't play 70 games a year anymore.

Parise continues to amaze, way better than his dad.

clemmenson is 32, will be 33 next year. he's no prosepct or kid. and marty has 3 yrs left on his contract. either clemmer or weekes will be backing marty up again next year.

we'll trade him to monty hall for markov if you want. [Smile]

Nah, Markov is playing a bit better with Schneider on the point.

I've been hearing a bunch of rumours about Pronger, some say Devils or Bruins. That would be devastating to the east. We'll have to see.

Posted by xchazx (Member # 7158) on :

pronger on the bruins would really suck for the devils. i just don't think the devils have the pieces to trade for pronger.

i think lou will make a trade, but i think it's going to be something smaller, though recently there has been rumblings the devils may also be looking for a center since it looks like zubrus is getting knocked off of the first line.

Re-check your schedule buffalo-girl! That was last week....remember that you already won that game? haha. Anyway, we get Colorado tonight, in fact, I'll be heading out soon for The Garden. I asked EJ if she wanted to come with me....she just laughed in my face and said she would rather play Laser Tag than watch those two pitiful teams.

Nice win for the Rangers last night for a change. Actually scored some goals too. I couldn't believe what I was seeing! Sure it helps to be playing a lousy team, but they did what they were supposed to. Tortorella's offensive style system sure is fun to watch. I can't stand defensive systems and that is all Renney would play. Hopefully we can keep up the intensity that was last night. What a great night it was in The City too!

sorry about that 80's rocked i realized it after i got off the computer yesterday lol we played the islanders and lost our 3rd. game in a row!!! we really looked bad all they kept doing was passing not shooting the puck so aggravating!!

Some great games last night, still in shock the Habs beat the mighty Sharks 3-2, along with Philly friday night. Could you even believe that two weeks ago when they were on that horrific road trip? Jaroslav Halak has been the miracle man of late, just feel bad he has to stop 40 plus shots per night for us to win.

I saw that the Isles shutout Buffalo last night. There were a few upsets that helped us out. It is sure gonna be a tight finish to make the playoffs. I'm about to score some tickets for the Rangers/Boston game next Sunday....this will be some tough contest for us.

Avery will back with the Blueshirts on Thursday, see how and Torts will get along. I have a date with you Wednesday BuffaloGirl, we'll see how the Sabres will do aganst the Habs. The Pens overtook the Sabres in the standings on the weekend, for their sake I hope they get a goalie by the wednesday trade deadline.

I had a feeling that this day was coming. I said in the beginning of the year that I wanted them to resign Avery. Then he left and made a fool of himself. I really hope he grows up and helps us now.

Trade deadline is almost here, no big trades yet, but a few players like Morrison(Anaheim) and Satan(Pittsburgh) have been put on waivers. Should be an interesting day.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Calgary get Oli Jokinen, they gave up Matthew Lombardi, a defenseman and a draft pick to get him. Things are going to get interesting in the next few hours, even though Anaheim said they are not dealing Chris Pronger.

So I see the Wild signed Nicklas Backstrom, it's a good move getting him locked up.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

80's rocked, your team did pretty well at the trade deadline geting Derek Morris from Phoenix and Nik Antropov from Toronto. As for the Habs, looks like zilch and another summer of speculation. God I'm bummed.

great game last night 5-1!!!! thank-you since we lost the last three games we really needed this win!! we are not too happy about the trade of kotalik? we were hoping afinaganov would be traded? he has been terrible for years now!! but we did get dominic moore ? dee

Posted by Sammy Hain Invasion (Member # 3150) on :

No trades for the Wild. Was hoping they would have found a taker for Gaborik. At least they resigned Backstrom which I feel is huge. Time for them to get rid of Lemaire I'm afraid to say.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Terrible game. Price should get some seasoning in Hamilton of this keeps up. And Gainey's passiveness at the trade deadline is going to cost big time. That's if we make the playoffs.

so how is that trade to Calgary working out for the Flames and Jokinen? After one period in his first game wearing the new sweater Jokinen has two goals and the Flames lead the Flyers 4-0. The Flames are becoming a very scary team out West.

Iginla has waited for years to play with someone like Jokinen. If Dion Phaneuf could pick up his play and Kiprosoff is light out, they could be dangerous.

Count me in that mix too, shutout by Atlanta? You gotta be kidding. I could see not making the playoffs in the 100th year. Might be time for Gainey and Carbo to step aside. As for the Avs, breaks my heart to see a once proud franchise floundering like that. Surprised no one tried to trade for Smyth or Laperriere at the deadline.

I was at The Garden today for this gem. Wow what a big two points! We almost blew it again in the third, but the King came through again with some brilliant saves. I must say....it is so enjoyable watching hockey being played like this, Tortorella's run and gun first style....attack!!! Play defensively a bit more later on with the lead, but until then....attack!!! Awesome wide open hockey every game since he became the coach here and I love it(win or lose). It was great beating the almighty Bruins. I was just praying for one point going in....what a steal of two.

Habs fire Carbonneau as head coach and Gainey goes behind the bench. Could prove to be a great move for Montreal as Gainey has had success as a coach in the past.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Kind of a shock after a 3-1 win in Dallas, I guess Gainey spent the weekend in Hamilton evaluating the talent and checking out coach Don Lever who will be on board with Gainey. The phone was ringing all night when the news hit around supper time. Kind of feel bad, Carbo's firing masked a lot of Gainey's gaffes. I still predict Carbo will be leading the Dallas Stars to the Western conference finals in a few years. The coaching job in Montreal is one of the toughest assignments in sports.

philadelphia kicked our butts last night 6-2 terrible !! don't look good at all for the play-offs for us this year!!!

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

We were lucky to beat the Oilers 4-3 last night on OT(Sorry Kevdug). We play good in the first period, then fold in the second, still the inconsistency even with Gainey behind the bench. We play Islanders and Devils this week. Brodeur could potentially break Roy's win record on Saturday night against us. Anyone notice there is no easy 2 points anymore in the league? Teams like Islanders, Atlanta, and St. Louis seem to be upsetting much better teams of late. And Boston is really dropping a lot of games lately.

Huge 2 points on the road tonight for the Rangers. Zherdev was in the doghouse. Torts had him on the bench for nearly the entire second and third periods. Should wake him up though. Things are still tight as ever in the standings. Buffalo wins, Montreal gets a point as well as Pittsburgh. Philly and Carolina lose though which helps. Going to the wire..... Oh, sorry xchazx, I guess I should mention that the Devils won yet again.

it happens so often you don't have to keep mentioning it [Cool]

only 4 or 5 pts seperates 4th from 9th place in the east so things are tight. i think philthy has some games in hand though.

rip, what's monty hall saying about broduer and the chance of tying the all time wins record there? except for the nightmare out on the island, he's been good since coming back.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

X-man, there is a good chance that Brodeur will tie the record tomorrow night at the Bell Centre. Also speculation that Patrick Roy will be in attendance. It would be fitting seeing as Marty's father worked for the Habs and all. What's up with the Islanders? Don't they want John Tavares? Sure not playing like it. Doing better since they parted Comrie and Guerin, they beat us in OT last night 3-2. If it wasn't for Price it would have been 6-2. Don't think getting rid of Carbo will make any difference, too many passengers, not enough generals.

Huge win for the Blueshirts at The Garden today after the embarrassment yesterday in the home and home vs. Philly. The game of musical chairs continues in the standings.

this was so sad last night the sabres were winning the game 3-2 against the thrashers then they scored in the last 3 seconds of the game to tie it up!! went into a shoot-out and they won arggggggg!!!

Another mediocre effort on Saturday, X-man, your boy Marty came through tyong the record. Also liked the fact that all the Devils and personnel came on the ice and congratulated him, a real "family" moment, a term that's pretty foreign to the soft, gutless Habs.

We'll have to see what kind of game transpires Tuesday 80'sRocked. Avery has been playing good of late, the standings are so tight right now it's going to go down right to the wire.

It's going to be like a playoff game tonight, Price in nets, Kovalev is back, we'll see which team shows up. Just don't ask me what team I'm picking for a bet tonight. A lot of other huge games tonight as well. Probably my favorite time of the year for hockey.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Man, what a downer. We got one point, but not as good as a game as I thought it was going to be. Carey Price saw a lot of shots, but he loked terrible in the shootout. Fluky third goal by Markov too. A lot of fans are frustrated with this team.

So King Marty has the title for most wins now, and the Red Wings came back against the Flyers. Too bad Buffalogirl, the Senators won. Those standings are as close as can be.

Posted by buffalo-girl (Member # 7498) on :

i know we were winning until the start of the 2nd. period 2-0 then they scored 2 goals terrible game again 4-2 so much for the playoffs? bummer!!!!

I picked Buffalo to win too on a bet, such is life. There's talk that Ryan Miller has been practicing, so he might be back before the season is over.

that's good news riptide cause as of last friday they were saying he was not even skating yet? sorry about your bet!! but i had a bad feeling last night ottawa has been kicking our butt lately?

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

I just have a hard time with crap teams going nowhere "suddenly" playing well at the end of the season like the Thrashers, Islanders, even the Senators. Like where was this effort in October boys? Unfortunately I can't root for Sabres at all, with them and Carolina being so close to us in the standings.

Posted by 80'sRocked (Member # 6979) on :

That was a heck of a game last night Ripper! You must have been full of highs and lows with the back and forth! That extra point we got was huge I think. Good thing Florida and Buffalo lost for both of us. We get Buffalo next on Sat. night.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

80'srocked, your team has more momentum right now with the coaching change(Torts), the revival of Avery and the deadline moves(Morris, Antropov)than us. I really fear we won't be in the playoffs come April with the inconsisten, indifferent play. The fanbase here is rabid, but there were boos last night so the fans are pretty fed up with Gainey's 5 year plan. If we do make it, I pray it's not first round against the Devils, the Bruins maybe since they look vulnerable. Should be a heck of a three weeks though.

Posted by 80'sRocked (Member # 6979) on :

Doesn't look good for Montreal right now.....down 4-0 I see. Rangers are leading 4-1 after 2 periods to Buffalo. Good night so far for us.

Update - 4-2 now in the Montreal game....that was fast!

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Gabby's back? Wonder if he will be playing his last stretch as a Wild. He takes up so much cap space. Also Sam, you hearing any reports that Jacques Lemaire won't be back next year?

Posted by Sammy Hain Invasion (Member # 3150) on :

Pretty sure Gabby will finish the season in Minnesota now that the trade deadline has passed. Haven't heard anything about Lemaire but personally I think it's time for a change even though I feel he's a good coach

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

I think it might be a good move for both parties, Lemaire is a good coach, but he wants to win every game 1-0, maybe a a coach with a different system might be appropriate. I have a feeling that Saku Koivu might be going to the Wild in the offseason. No clue who will be the next Habs coach. There's talk it might be Don Lever or Bob Hartley. When things couldn't get more screwy here, we are hearing reports the team might be up for sale as well. All I know is we are playing like the worst team in the league and it's a crying shame being the 100th season and all.

In the six games since Gaborik has come back from his injury he's tallied 5 goals to go along with 3 helpers. Makes you wonder just what kind of numbers he would have pit up this season if he could have stayed healthy or just what he could have brought back to the Wild if they were to trade him away. Absolutely one of the most dynamic players in the league.

Wild still have an outside chance at the playoffs but I'm not overly confident.

It's lining up to be a doozy tomorrow with Florida still technically in it with that win against the Penguins. Only problem with tonight's game against the Senators is no Markov and Schneider.

Sam, a heartbreaker last night with the WIld giving up that goal to Detroit with a minute left. Might have been the season right there.

Sweet win tonight against the Habs for us tonight! Florida loses as well! The Rangers haven't looked this good in a while. I know that Montreal must be tired with 3 games in 4 nights....they sure looked it at times. 2 games left.

Oh, sorry Buffalo-girl. Our win tonight officially knocks you guys out of the race. Better luck next year.

We choked tonight, not a happy camper. Ho we are supposed to win with the loss of Schneider and Markov is anyone's guess with the bad defense we played tonight. Didn't help that Laraque and Stewart didn't dress especially with that pest/twit Avery tonight. How we are going to win against the Bruins and Penguins is anyone's guess.

I don't blame you Sam for hoping. Lemaire is a good coach and what he did with the Devils will never be forgotten, but this style of hockey is out in this day and age.....not to mention how boring it is. Sucks that you guys didn't make it in Sammy, would have been nice for the discussions here.

Rangers got a shot against the Caps in this series. Theodore looked shaky and that could be what does them in if King Henry stands on his head. Not sure what happened to Drury in the warmup and why he had to miss the game. Dubinsky's goal was sick.

The Devils handled Carolina with ease, they outshot them badly. And the Pens made quick work of the Flyers. God, this is my favorite time of year where every game means something.

Rip...no comments on Thursday's game...oh....you must be in mourning [Frown] I'll not poke too much fun....I'm an Oiler's fan! Really out of the loop this year, re really busy with my job and family...but hoping to get back on track now that the playoffs are on. For the record....when my Oilers are out...I always pick a Canadian team to cheer for...so I'll be rootin for your Habs. If all Canadian teams are out...I cheer for New Jersey....Colin White is a home town boy.....

A tad off topic for one moment...has anyone else seen the recent hockey DVDs they are releasing? They chronical a specific team and include their 10 most popular games over the years, as voted on by fans...10 complete games. I've only seen a set for the Islanders and Oilers so far....my birthday is soon, and I'm pretty sure my wife got the Oilers set for me....awwww...who am I kidding....I'm totally sure...I saw it through the bag! Anyone else seeing these?

They've got more than a shot! They are as good as any team(offensively)at even strength(with Tort's). The King is doing the rest.....winning the first 2 games in Washington is a real shocker, but we can't let up now.....go for the jugular at home now!

Just watching Penguins-Flyers game 3.
This is war, ladies and gentlemen!!

Habs/Bruins and Flyers/Pens have to be the most heated, hated, vicious wars on ice at this moment. How about those Sharks? Looking like another chokeathon.

Rangers pushing the Caps on the brink of elimination yesterday. Looks like Torts wll get them in the next round. I just hope they take out the Bruins too.

Sam, you heard any rumours that Gaborik is LA bound?

The King was at his best last night....one of his best performances in his career. It aint over yet though, Ovechkin is a one man show.

Sorry for the beat-down and flat out embarassment Rip. I hope we advance and kick the crap out of them in the next round.

Where are you xchazx? Marty has a game like that and you're nowhere to be found?

That was one of the best goalie duels I ever saw last night with Mary and Cam Ward. I have a feeling it's going to 7. X-man, give a holla.

Disgraceful appearance from the Rangers tonight in Washington. I'm ticked that I now have to cancel my tee time on Sunday to watch a game 6....which shouldn't be on at 2:00 in the afternoon in the first place! Sucks. They better win and make it all worth-while....actually, they have to win because I can't see them winning a game 7 in Washington.

It's turning out to be a topsy turvy series with a lot of drama. With the Torts water bottle incident, the Dubinsky biting thing, and some Ovechkin highlight goals. Let's hope the Rangers can get their A game Tuesday night. I wonder if the Sharks will go down tonight or make it to seven. Blackhawks might finish off the banged up Flames as well.

I feel your pain xchazx. After I watched my team go down with a lowly, pathetic, humiliating, one shot on goal in the third period last night....I switched on the Devils/Canes to see that the Devs were still winning with about 5 minutes left. "Great", I said to myself. Now I also get to watch the eff'n Devils celebrate a game 7 victory at home. What can I say? I couldn't believe what I was seeing after those two goals so late like that. I was, and still am, truly shocked. Only the Rangers are capable of such debacles! or so I thought! Amazing....anyway, for as happy and delighted as I was to witness it, I couldn't help but think of the pain that you must have felt with that swift kick in the nut$. I would rather blow a 3 games to 1 lead than go out like that.

Riptide, kevdug, buffalo-girl, EJ, Sammy, xchazx....we had some good runs this season....well, maybe not EJ, but anyway, thanks for making this season more enjoyable than ever before. Better luck to us all next year. With that said, I'll still be hanging around here for the rest of the playoffs! Afterall, I HAVE to root against Sid the Kid....sorry PittsburghGirl [Razz] at least you're still playing hockey and not golf. [Wink]

Posted by kevdugp73 (Member # 5978) on :

My Oilers didn't even get to play golf...out so early...the greens were too wet! I have to pick another team to cheer for in the playoffs. My rule of thumb....cheer for any Canadian team left....then cheer for New Jersey, as Colin White grew up in my home town...which means a Stanley Cup parade practically driving right past my house...then to Pittsburgh...Crosby grew up only a mere 1.5 hour drive from my home town...I'd certainly be up for a short road trip to see the Stanley Cup parade.....

a truly historic choke job by the devils. 80 seconds away from the next round and they give up not one, but two ****ing goals. but this was probably for the best, because there was no way this team was advancing past the next round because i still don't believe CAR is that good.

this is going to be a big off season for the devils. i have to believe some big changes are coming. this was an old team built to win this year. they will not finish better than 4th in the atlantic next season, and possibly last, if they don't tweak this team. this could be the first time in about 16 years where i think the devils may have to rebuild. brodeur has shown that age is finally catching up with him. he needs a better d in front of him because he is no longer capable of carrying a team. he's as guilty of this collapse as anyone. this is going to be a long summer.

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Man, I lost some money on the Devils, that collapse I could only imagine happening to the Canadiens or the Rangers, but Marty and the Devils? I sensed the Devils were in a bit of trouble in game 6 when it looked like 40 year old Shanahan was the only one who looked like he was bringing it. In my office pool, I honestly had a Sharks-Devils final, now I'm last in the pool.

X-man, what's the NJ media saying about the team right now? Is Sutter's job in jeopardy? What will they do with Clemenson? What's Lou saying now?

As for the Rangers, the media must be having a field day too. It just reeks of sick irony that in the end John Torterella was as undisciplined as Sean Avery. And these overpaid guys like Redden, Gomez, Naslund and Drury just did not bring it when it counted.

As for my team, the Habs are in total chaos with a complete overhaul imminent. 11 UFA players, not just the GM, coach and goalie posiition in question, but the buzz of the owner selling the team admidst all this uncertainty is sheer bedlam.

It's going to be the Penguins vs. Washington Caps. I'm looking forward to seeing the Russian vs. Russian- Malkin v. Ovechkin. Should be an exciting round! I just wish Crosby would keep his flap shut with his whining sometimes!

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

That battle last night with Ovie vs. Crosby was worth the price of admission alone. Both players getting hat-tricks. Ovie was just so explosive we almost take it for granted now. Just wish "Gino" Malkin would get his act together.

Looks like I spoke too soon. Pittsburgh is going back to Washington for Game 7! Alot of screw-ups, especially when old man Gill blocked the cave behind Fleury, so the Caps could score 2 in a row. Then in overtime, a broken stick cost us the game!

Posted by kevdugp73 (Member # 5978) on :

Gotta love game 7s though...I'll be catching this one for sure...again....rootin for Pittsburgh in this series, as Crosby is a Nova Scotia boy....lived only about 1.5 hours away from my place...close enough to do a road trip for the Stanley Cup parade........woot woot.....

Yes kevdug! I didn't expect a game like that either! I thought it was going ot be a close one like the previous games. I really wish Fleury wouldn't have left the cave for that brief second to let Olvechkin score like that. But it was a good game, and since I knew they were going to win it with only 2 minutes left in the game, I was able to break in my new t-shirt so I can wear it for the next series. Whoo-hoo!

Just watching the Boston - Carolina game...into OT...rootin for Boston...I think that would be an awsome semi finals....Detroit vs Chicago...Boston vs. Pittsburg. I would love love love to see a Boston - Chicago final...sorry Pitts....I know on a recent post I was rootin for Pittsburg so I might get to see a Stanley Cup parade w' Crosby brinin' the cup home....but I think Boston - Chicago would be awsome. Ummmm...better wait to see if Boston is even in the semi final. Though...if we see a Detroit - Pittsburg final...I'll root wit ya Pitts!

I thought the Bruins were going to win when Lucic tied it up, but the cardiac Canes came through (again). Now it's Staal vs. Staal withe the Canes and Pens. And I'm pulling for the upstart Blackhawks to upset the Red Wings.

Posted by kevdugp73 (Member # 5978) on :

True enough Rip....Chicago = youth, speed, inexperience...Detroit = old geezers who still play great hockey, and have tons of experience. I'll cheer for anyone but Detroit...only because they've snabbed the cup several times in recent years....time for someone else to have a go....

Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :

Poor old Blackhawks haven't won since 1961 compared to the Red Wings in 07-08, the Pens in 91-92 and the Canes in 05-06. I'd say they are due in Chi Town.

A big RIP to former Flyer, Blue, Leaf Peter Zezel aged only 44 who died from a rare blood disease yesterday. He had a role in the movie Youngblood too, the scene where the coach tries to take out Rob Lowe because he would be matched up with the goon Racki, Peter Zezel skated to take Lowe's place but he wouldn't come off the ice. Zezel was a good solid two way player in his day, it's a shame.

Posted by Pittsburghgirl (Member # 7514) on :

kevdug, I sure hope that you are still cheering on the Penguins. We sure need your help! And the refs in game two stunk. There were so many penalties not called against Detroit. Not to be a crybaby, but Staal was hit in the nose, not that he didn't just brush it off; and Talbot's stick got broken resulting in a goal for Detroit. Pens better step it up and win games 3 & 4. And what was up with Fleury in game one- my husband said "take the hook out of him so he stops flopping around!". He looked like a fish out of water flopping around on the ice like that.

Posted by kevdugp73 (Member # 5978) on :

I'm right there with ya Pitts...I've been watching every second of every game. I hear ya on the penalty calling. Game one as well...dude covered the puck with his hand when it was on top of Osgood....that's supposed to result in a penalty shot for the other team...but that wasn't called either. I'm so hopin that Pittsburgh pulls off a couple of wins at home...then Detroit wins game five...Pittsburgh wins game six...and wins it in game seven....sweet. I don't watch too much hockey through the regular season...too busy. So come playoff time, my wife is pretty tolerant and will even watch a bit with me. It's 9 PM now, so the game is just starting here....here's hopin for one...good luck!

Posted by Pittsburghgirl (Member # 7514) on :

I haven't heard anything about Sykora. Talbot has been exceptional. I wish Malkin could have scored too. He's getting better at his English language skills now too! He was joking with the press about it.

If I could have shot the tv on saturday, i would have. Pittsburgh needs to knock off the crap and get their act together. No more dirty playing, they are only going to make themselves look bad.

I'll be watchin for sure...really hoping for a game 7. If the Pens win tomorrow, does it go back to Detroit for game 7...and does anyone know when a game 7 would be on...again...I'm scared it will land on one of my backshifts....might have to be a sick day...cause I ain't missin a game 7! * My wife will be happy when this is all over...I have the horse blinders on during the playoffs...not much else gets done....

Swing....game 7 it is....Friday night in Detroit. I'm scheduled to work a backshift (7PM - 7AM)...not sure about requesting a vacation day, as last minute requests are not supposed to happen...or...call in sick. If I request a vacation day and it is declined...I can't call in sick and risk missing the game. Hmmmm...I have 1400 + hours of sick time banked...might just be time to cash some in...here's hoping Pittsburgg can pull on off in Detroit....home games have obviously been key....

What a game last night! Can't wait for Friday night to go down. Fleury had a whale of a game last night, just hope Crosby and Malkin can save their best for last. OMG, I was so nervous. So was the hubby- he was so agitated, when I felt his arm, I think his body temp had gone up 50 degrees, haha! Thank goodness for Scuderi saving two shots too! Fleury finally pulled his head outta his butt also.
kevdug, I say use up some sick time! See you Friday in Detroit! We need you to watch the game, cuz you bring Pittsburgh good luck when you do watch!

Incredible game! More than lived up to it's billing. Just a gritty, intense, edge of your seat classic game with a flurry of a finish. b. Fleury was incredible and Talbot had the game of his life. Just surreal seeing Sid lift the Cup after getting injured and having no goals in the finals. Do do it in Joe Louis was even more incredible.

80'srocked, this might sound kind of strange, but the way I see it, the Rangers will hoist the Cup in 2012. Eric Staal led the Canes to the Cup in 2006, Jordan just iced his in 2009, so I figure Marc Staal will hoist his in 2012.

Holy crap Kevdug, there must be a severe party going on back home with the native son Sid getting his first cup. Being an ex-pat Bluenoser myself I'm might envious of the fun going on there. My young nephew Sam in Halifax must be on cloud nine that his beloved #87 gets to be the youngest captain in NHL history to raise a cup!

I'm envious too of the party going on in Pittsburgh as well. Just incredible with the Steelers and now the Pens in 2009. PG, take some parade photos or something.

Congrats Pittsburghgirl...awsome game. Finally...I'm able to take off my playoff underwear...may need to be surgically removed [Eek!] Imagine how Talbot is feeling right now...the only two goals...to win game seven in the finals...holy crap! Pretty decent party here Rip...had a few buddies over...some beers...my wife even watched the game. Already planning a road trip when Sid takes the cup home....only about an hours drive away. * Had the cup right through my hometown twice already...Collin White w' New Jersey, and John Sim w' Dallas....exciting stuff. And...just a small reminder of my previous post-

"Pittsburgh pulls off a couple of wins at home...then Detroit wins game five...Pittsburgh wins game six...and wins it in game seven....sweet."

I feel I'm partly responsible for them winning...you're welcome Pittsburghgirl [Wink]

This must be the biggest thing for the Maritimes since then-TB's Brad Richards brought home the cup to PEI. In one of the french newspapers here, Talbot was on the cover with the headline Talbot superstar, with Fleury not too far behind. Seeing Mario raise the Cup for the first time since 92 and now as an owner was incredible too.

With 3 or 4 minutes left there was a shot that the announcer said hit the crossbar and bounced out, but viewed from a different angle it was definitely a goal. Why wasn't it reviewed?!?!?!? I think that the league just wants to promote Sidney Crosby and the Penguins for TV ratings.

That was a goal and the Red Wings would have won it in OT. We were robbed!!!

Posted by kevdugp73 (Member # 5978) on :

I've seen the replay...clearly hit the crossbar. And as for what the league wanted...seems like they wanted Detroit to win...given the dozen penalties they didn't call on Detroit in games 1 and 2...but really...what do I know...I'm an Edmonton Oilers fan! [Wink]

Thanks for all the well wishes from all the other hockey fans here. I was so wound up and nervous, even after the game was over on Fri. I had to make two mixed drinks to settle my butt down! The boys have been partying all weekend, and yesterday Lemieux had a party at his house for the team. I didn't go to the parade today- everyone else is working so I wouldn't have anyone to go with me. I watched it on tv- two stations here had complete coverage of the entire parade. I'll try to put up alink here so you guys can see it. It was so cool seeing the guys hoisting the cup, and drinking champagne from the cup too. Crosby and Malkin drank from the cup up on the stage along with their parents. Hal Gill was funny as usual, Talbot did his little "ssshhh" with his finger to quiet the crowd, then got them stirred up again. It was really exciting- I'm glad to have been able to watch it from home. They said it was extremely hot downtown along the parade route, and the people were lined up on the sidewalks 10 deep! I'm afraid I'd pass out in that kind of crowd with the heat. Thanks again guys. I'm going to go look for a link to parade coverage!

I was pretty shocked at all the action by the Rangers yesterday, but it's all good to me. We need a big change with this organization. Gomez didn't do what he was expected here. I just hope that Higgins and Gabby can perform here on the big stage where so many others have failed. I'm not big on our other addition of Brashear. I hate his kind of goonery. I will have to try to accept him though....

Besides higgins you got some good prospects from us too. Trading Higgins I wasn't that thrilled with as I think he hasn't scratched the surface of what he's capable of yet. Let's see if he pans out in NY. If Gabby stays healthy he could be one of the most explosive players Broadway has seen since Pavel Bure.

Lets see Hossa to the Hawks for 12 years. Chicago sure is loading up to make a serious run at the Cup

The Wild lose Gabby to the Rangers but get Havlat from the forementioned Blackhawks. Havlat is pretty flash and explosive but not on the same level as Gabby. However Havlat appears to be a much better two-way player. The big simillarity between the two is that they're both fragile.

Also just read that Joe Sakic looks like he's about to retire

We lost our captian today, and we lost Kovalev a few days ago. I'm all for the Habs changing directions and all, but it's still hard to say goodbye to these guys. Thanks for the memories.

Jacques Lemaire back in Jersey. Patrik Elias must be groaning. X-man, give us a call.

terrible coach signing by the devils. this will only set our franchise back. nothing good can come of this signing. it will now be tougher to sign our own guys and no FA's will want to sign here.

i was hoping for mike haviland.

I was hoping the Devils would get Don Lever who we stupidly gave up. He was a former Devils captain too.

Zherdev walks after the Rangers wouldn't meet his salary at arbitration.

xchazx...Colin White's summer cottage is literally 3 lots down from mine...so I'm practically next door neighbors with an NHLer. My son is four years old, and I believe Colin has a daughter around the same age...I'm thinking "arranged marriage"...he foots the bill for the wedding of course. If they win the cup again, I hope he hosts a big summer bash with the rest of the team....I'm so crashing that party!

My season starts tonight.... I've learned to not expect much anymore because I always end up disappointed! We will see....

xchazx....yeah he's had a few injuries throughout the years and certainly not a top notch player...but always good to have some hometown roots in the league....also from the very same town is Jon Sim from the Islanders. It's pretty exciting being from a small town and having two NHLers playing in the league.

* Just to clarify....Colin White's beautiful lake side cottage/slash retreat, is three lots down from my.....crusty trailer...but hey...we're looking at the exact same lake! [Wink]

Things aint lookin' great for my Rangers early.... defense still stinks and they take bad penalties. Gaborik now out 3 weeks with shoulder and Drury broke the same finger again and out 6 weeks!
