That line in Bryan Adams, where he is talking about standing on your momma's porch, the summer seemed to last forever. I don't know about you, but summer has been whizzing by for me. I've had fun thus far don't get me wrong, but I'm just trying to break it down how long in duration those 80's summers used to be. I had part time summer jobs too back then but it just seemed like there was endless time between the end of school in May/June up to the return in early Sept.

I'm thinking I was happier with less money, things seemed newer and less monotonous at a younger age. Also I get the feeling that my concept of fun was being more or less invented during that time as well. Do you miss those long kind of summers? Maybe some of you are students or teachers, so everything is great.

So true Riptide.I feel the exact same way.I am also retired,so i have all the time to myself [Cool] Anyway the time, and generally summers, are whizzing by faster and faster every year.

I think Albert Einstein may have overlooked something [Roll Eyes]

Also i don`t think money equals to happiness. As long as you got enough $ to get by,and don`t have to worry about bills/payments all nights long.I really think happiness is to be looked for in other places
Be well

Riptide, the older you get the fast life goes by. Robin Williams explained it best in "Dead Poet's Society".....Carpe Diem - Seize the day.

Life would be best if we could live it in reverse. I think everything is relative to where you are in life, when you're young you want to be older so that you can have money and security, and when you're older you want to be younger because no amount of money can replace your youth. People that are 30, wish they were 20. People that are 40 now realize 30 wasn't so bad and so on.

And to answer your question, summers in the 80's did seem to last forever.

What a great answer Valley... [Smile]

Also I think its relative to "free time"... I so remember long summer evenings outside. I guess being in cars and whetever isolates us from the environment and the impact those summer evenings with golden light and long shadows can have on us...

I think when you were a kid your time wasn't so scheduled/managed. You didn't "have" to be anywhere "every day" during the summer or during the whole year. some of us worked (I did) but most kids didn't. Now we are used to schedules and timetables. We know what time we wake up, what time we eat breakfast by, what time we have to leave home to get to work on time, what time our tv shows are on etc... This is what we plan our lives around. You ever go on vacation and forget your watch? If you're having a good time, you loose track of time altogether. It's kind of like your childhood all over again. [Smile]

Jdoc, you are spot on! Schedules, routines, planning everything out to the minute - time freakin' flys. It's great when I go on vacation and within a couple of days, I never know the time, date or even what day it is! Time stands still and you just live for the moment.
I remember the best job I ever had was when I was 17 and I was a camp counselor. That summer seemed to last forever. Hanging out, playing all day, swimming and the sleepouts. Best of all - I got paid for it. Those were the days.

80'sRocked, I was at one of your camps and that was a great speech you gave:

"And even if we win, if we win, HAH! Even if we win! Even if we play so far above our heads that our noses bleed for a week to ten days; even if God in Heaven above comes down and points his hand at our side of the field; even if every man woman and child held hands together and prayed for us to win, it just wouldn't matter because all the really good looking girls would still go out with the guys from Mohawk because they've got all the money! It just doesn't matter if we win or we lose. IT JUST DOESN'T MATTER!"

Oh and those dance moves of yours....what was that song...oh I remember....Makin' it?

80sRocked-I was a camp counselor too...for 5 years...and we had a blast. We had food fights, and we went on nature walks, and we played with that parachute thing that you fling in the air, and run under....-remember that thing in gym class, and you'd stick a ball in the middle and everyone grabbed an edge and you use to throw the ball in the air.

We entertained ourselves without the use of electronics. We played outside.

I was talking about this over the 4th of July with a group of my friends who are my age...they were talking about playing a game called "Ghost in the Graveyard"...I never heard of that...it was like Freeze Tag....one person was "it"...and then everyone hid, and then once you found a person, they had to go to the "graveyard" area... I think it was like regular freeze tag...but that if someone else snuck in and tagged them...then they could escape again.

Does anyone remember how much fun that was? At night...to get all the neighborhood kids together and play Tag. If I touched a kid now, and said "Your it!"...and took off running...they'd look at me like I lost my mind.

I don't run on a schedule much even now...I kind of do what I want when I want it...but to me it is harder to get other people motivated to do things...

Now this summer is flying by...I think...and I want it to stop because I hate being stuck in the house in the winter, and not having my flowers and all my landscaping to look at.

I remember my summers were about....swimming all summer long...either at my house or even at the community pool, or in the creek...and we rode our bike everywhere.

My mom and dad would take us for ice cream in the evenings.

We played baseball, and basketball, and the schools had all kinds of summer programs for kids...we went on picnics- my favorite thing...was me and my brother would pack our metal lunchboxes...with a peanutbutter and jelly sandwich and some Kool-Aid-in a Thermos, some Little Debbie snack cakes...or some Keebler Elf Cookies...or a handful of chips...and it was like the best meal, and we walked up the railroad tracks and either climbed a tree and sat in it, or we sat in the grass along the train tracks, and we'd put pennies on the tracks and wait for a train to come flatten them.

We use to have fun freezing lemonade in ice cube trays, and eating freeze pops. We would swing on grapevines. We played Red Rover, and Mother- May I, and Simon Says. We rollerskated everywhere. Someone always was camping out in the yard in the summer....my girlfriends would stay at my house and the neighborhood boys...would sneek over to see us...and they'd grab us in our sleeping bags, and swing us in the yard, and it was fun. Or we'd sneek up on the boys with squirt guns.

I miss that stuff so much. I am trying real hard to still be a kid. We did the hula hoop on the 4th of July...we all "attempted" to see who could jump rope the longest.

We planned on playing Jacks, but we did run out of time.

I want everything to slow down. I look back at every year of my life and think about how I remembered every second of my life up until I was about 25 years old...and then from that time on...everything is a blur...I can not tell you what happened in 2004 as opposed to 2006 or 2003....all those years seem the same to me...and nothing stands out in my mind. I can not name a movie that I know for sure came out in 2004. I am clueless.
So, I feel like those years of my life were a complete blur. I have no clue what I was doing.

But, I can tell you what I was doing every summer in the 80's.

I forgot how much camping I used to do in the 80's with buds from school in the summers. Being in a small town with lots of woods and trees helped too. Seeing Stand by Me actually increased the fervour to wander, god were we really looking for our own Ray Brauer? I hope not. Seeing those Friday the 13th movies sure didn't help us sleeping at night. And believe it or not, seeing someone wearing a goalie mask at night was not as crazy as you think being in hockey mad Canada!

Isis, did you take the time to write a diary in the 80's? I did for a few months in 85, and have been dying to find it all these years.

Riptide-I wrote a Diary in 4th, 5th and 6th grade...but it was so lame. I saved all my stuff like that in my "hope chest"...and I'd read it when I was older...and it would say things like "I didn't do much today". Or...me and my friend played with our Barbies. Or me and my brother pretended we were bionic. When I was 9 I got a scrapbook, because I saved everything. I saved a piece of birthday cake from my 9th birthday party. I saved movie ticket stubs. I kept doing a scrapbook up until my son was a few years old.

My high school scrapbooks were filled with stuff I did on dates...and I wrote specific memories down ....which is hysterical to read about now.

My mom has kept a journal for years...she is doing one right now. She did one in the 80's...and every once and awhile she'd get it out and we'd read stuff...because she always wrote about what I was doing...because I was living in my own apartment...and I would come home on the weekends and stay at her house...and there were always guys at my mom's waiting for me to come home. Most of my friends in the 80's, were all guys.

Riptide you asked me about being tall...well...my 2 best friends were 6'3 and 6'4. I went everywhere with them in the 80's.
I could wear high heels, and I actually looked short...even though I was 6 feet tall with heels on. I loved being tall. Almost all my friends were my height or taller...I swear there must have been something in the drinking water where I lived. My mom called my 2 friends my "bookends" because there was one on each side of me ...everywhere I went...and they looked like my body guards. My one friends nickname was "Ogre"...and he was half of our football team in high school. I remember at one time he weighed 313. He was a huge guy. He could pick me up and carry me over his shoulder...

I wish I would have done a real journal. I have every letter anyone ever wrote me in the 80's. So...that was cool to me. I kept notes from high school from my boyfriends and my friends.

When I moved on my own....I use to get 4-6 letters a week from different friends...My roommate thought I had my own fan club going on. I met a guy ...when I was his travel agent...and he sent me postcards from all the places he travelled, and he sent me presents...and I kept everything. I have 3 totes in my attic of nothing but Cards and letters from my friends in the 80's. So, every once in awhile when I am in the attic cleaning...I will read some of them. It makes me so sad though...but it is fun to see what I was doing then.

"Lee Harvey... you are a madman!"

It's worth pointing out that not only is time passing based on our own perception, but also how our brains store the memory of our activities. The internet sucks a huge amount of our time in a way few activities could in our respective childhoods: We can sit at the computer for hours at a stretch, email a hundred people, go to a thousand websites; but our brains are only going to store it as a single activity - 'the computer'. Whereas if you were to walk to a postbox a hundred times your mind would log a lot more things being done, even if the result was the same.

The new technology that speeds up our lives also takes time away from doing things that we will recall as we age, as our minds recall 'events' much better than routine activities. If you go out and do lots of things this summer, then in years to come you will have more memories of it. If you stay in and sit at the computer, then all you'll have is one grey blob of a memory which will congeal with all the other time in your life you spend sat at the keyboard.

Regardless, it still feels like time passes quicker when you get older!

OMG! We had an old Green Valiant that looked just like it. I hated driving that thing. It was a dump. The door flew open on me once, when I drove around a corner....after that I said...no way am I driving that "thing". I don't know what my Dad was thinking when he got it. I think he paid $200 for it...and he thought.. hey it has 4 wheels and it's better than walking...I thought I'll stick with riding my 10 speed.

Agree completely about summers lasting a lot longer when you were a kid. I remember summers back in the '80's as being long & sometimes boring. I do recall a lot of bike riding, going to the pool, reading comic books, etc. This is all before I got my drivers license.

That changed in Summer '87, when I got my first part-time job - and, from then on I was working either part-time, full-time, and/or going to school.

I miss those care-free summers sometimes - LOL.
