Def Leppard or Van Halen?
Both have sold over 10 million albums
Only 5 bands have done so

Neither...

IRON MAIDEN buries them both.

Van Halen kicks Def Leppard's but. Van Halen back in their prime were unbelievable. Fantastic musicians.

Eddie = Freak

Alex = Unbelievable

Michael = Unbelievable apart from those bass solos that started to get annoying after a while

Diamond Dave = While not the best singer, he still done alright but the main thing was his stage presence and charisma. He could completely stuff something up live and then do something witty and the crowd would eat it up. Dave defines cool apart from some of his questionable antics after leaving Van Halen but that's another topic.

Eddie Van Halen is my favourite guitarist ever. The guy is a severe freak.

I love Maiden too. A very good band live. They really give it their all, and unbelievable musicians too. Extremely talented.

Both are legendary bands and both have lost the magic touch completely during recent years/albums.

I´m not going to say which band is better because i just love most of their 70s-80s cd´s.

But you would definitely lean towards Van Halen, right? [Wink]

Maybe so but Def Lep´s Hysteria (1987) is in my all time top 5.
Prrrfect album [Cool]

Hey, I'll take that as a vote for Van Halen [Razz]

I'd have to give a slight edge to Def Leppard. I'f he had to say...who has the best song from either group....Van Halen by a mile with "Jump"....one of my all time favorite songs. In terms of listening to entire albums...Def Leppard by a mile. * Keeping things in perspective, however, while you guys were listening to these bands, I was listening to Michael Jackson, Cyndi Lauper, Prince, and Culture Club....sooooo.....I'm guessing my opinion on this one is not all that important!! And as far as Iron Maiden......sorry Pyro....that was not my cup of tea.....seems kinda easier for you though, to make fun of my music choices...not quite as cool! Maiden's album covers were top notch though!

I wasn't trying to diss either band or anyone's choices with my comment. I just meant that at the time I was listening to Van Halen and Def Leppard, I was also listening to a lot of Maiden...and if I had to choose between the 3, Maiden wins out everytime.

Def Leppard (only 1980-87 albums)for me simply because I liked more of their songs. Liked Van Halen though and was prob one of the few who liked Hagar better than Roth. Roth was the better showman, but IMO vocal edge would have to go to Hagar.

Devolution here,

I'm also siding with Def Leppard. Here's why. While Panama might be my favorite song by either band, Hysteria might be the only album that had like 7 songs released off of it that I can remember in the past 25 years.

Van Halen has great songs and great videos, but Def Leppard to me was almost religion when I was 14.

We are DEVO

got to go with van halen. also mike anthony does some of the best backing vocals in music.

personally i dont understand why people run down hagar, like his time with the band was crap, awesoeme tunes from both roth and hagar

i do like def leppard though

Both are classic 80's legends, but Halen takes it !

I'm not really a great fan of either. Out of the two though I'd go with Def Leppard.

I much prefer the original Van Halen but still love the Van Hagar era. I am a big fan of 5150. I love the Diamond Dave era the best and think that he is the better front man but Sammy is without a doubt a better singer and a better musician. I love them both but if I could see Van Halen, I would want to see the original Van Halen. They need to get rid of Wolfgang and get Michael Anthony back and they really need to do a world tour and come to Australia which I don't think is gonna happen. Last time they came they had Gary Cherone. While he is a great singer and is awesome in Extreme he shouldn't be in Van Halen.

I don't mind Def Leppard but never been a big fan. I kind of get into it when it comes on the radio. For some reason I feel guilty about it. I don't know why.

I can maybe only think of 2 or 3 songs that I like by Van Halen. Hell I can't even listen to the whole of their Greatest Hits Album without becoming bored. Leppard I can list more albums that I like than I can Halen songs so its no contest really, Def Leppard wins by a mile!

Pour some nomster on me [Cool]

PS I also agree that Maiden > Both

Hysteria is probably one of my all time favourite albums, pyromania as well that's awesome,I'd say from adrenalize onwards things got a little bit hit and miss but still some really great tracks in there.

Retroactive which was a collection of rarerities and b sides I thought was def leppards last really solid release.

Don't dislike van halen either, done more than there fair share of classic tracks!

Wow. Those two bands only sold 10 million records each? I heard a shocking stat that Kenny G and Michael Bolton have each sold 75 million albums each! That's insane.

Van Halen are just so groundbreaking with Diamond Dave, not as much as a fan of the Hagar era. Personal favorites are the debut album and Warning.

Def Lep had maybe the best polished pop metal sound I ever heard. Loved the High and Dry, Pyromania and Hysteria albums. Felt like they never could touch those peaks again after Steve Clark died.

Van Halen takes it by a hair!

The OP meant that both bands had 2 Diamond (10M+ sales) certified albums.

Def Leppard: Hysteria, Pyromania

Van Halen: Van Halen, 1984

I can believe, Micky Bolton sold that many -- but Kenny G? [Embarrassed]

Hi and dry and Pyromania rocked and was great stuff in the 80s and beyond. SOme of Hysteria was good but in my opinion this is NO CONTEST. VH wipes the floor with DL.
