The Thompson Twins were a British new wave group from 1977 to 1993. They achieved considerable popularity in the 1980s, scoring a string of hits around the globe. I never knew this in the 80's, but the Thompson Twins were named after the two bumbling detectives Thomson and Thompson in Hergé's comic strip.. The Adventures of Tintin. Might explain why they were predominately a synthpop trio everytime I saw them in a video.

I've always been a huge fan of the Thompson Twins..

The tune "Hold Me Now" is way up on my list of all-time favs. I realize that it was never in an 80's movie, but its use wickedly in the "The Wedding Singer" making it forever linked to the 80's. Also, used in "10 Things" and it still had an 80's feel to it for me.

But let's discuss other tunes from the Thompson Twins that I love finding in 80's flicks:

"If You Were Here" in a Cindy Mancini, Jessie, Sweetmamia fav Sixteen Candles

"In the Name of Love" in a Ronnie fav Ghostbusters

"Lay Your Hands On Me" in a Muffy fav Perfect [Wink]

"King For A Day" in a Pyromantic fav Lucas

Must mention a few more tunes..

"Lies"
"Doctor Doctor"
"You Take Me Up"
"Love On Your Side"

The group broke up in 1993, but I'd definitely find a way to see them in concert if the opportunity ever presents itself again.

Fans?

Not a big fan of the group, but I was lucky enough to see them in concert (in Oakland, Calif.) during the mid-80's!

IIRC, the group originally was a foursome, and then, at one point, had as many as 6 or 7 members, and then eventually became a trio that we know today. After the hitmaking years had passed, Joe Leeway left the group, and the Twins really were a duo.

I think Alannah Currie is now a political activist, and Tom is musically on his own. Don't know whatever happened to Joe.

Joe lives in Los Angeles and works in hypnotherapy.

Didnt Tom and Allanah end up hooking up and having some children together? Thats the last I heard.

* I remember wanting to do my hair like hers when I was 13 but my Mom used me being a bridesmaid in my sisters upcoming wedding as a solid reason for why I COULDNT.

The Thompson Twins were fairly credible in the UK until they released 'Into The Gap' (the album with 'Hold Me Now' on it), then they were written off as lightweight pop.

I have vivid memories of watching them perform 'We Are Detective' on Top of the Pops when I was younger.

They were named in 'Explorers' when Ethan Hawke is watching Amanda Peterson through the window:

"She's got some Thompson Twins records, and she's eating... I think it's... Boston Cream Pie"
"He's got it bad"

Love 'Hold Me Now'.

LOVE them...especially 'If you were here'. They confused me when I was a kid and they were no Kylie and Jason (what was in for kids)... but discovering beautiful music retrospectively is the resulting serendipity of watching 80's films [Smile]

My favorites in order are:

1 - King For A Day
2 - If You Were Here
3 - Get That Love
4 - Hold Me Now
5 - Lay Your Hands On Me

If I hear 'Lies' one more time I might explode. Really annoying chorus.

Now that Im a grown up I ask myself: why didnt I just ask for the haircut again THE DAY AFTER THE WEDDING????

My Mom was talking me out of a lot of bad haircut ideas. I think a lot of 80s moms had that.

I just sang along with you Ronnie! haha

Didn't the video have the band 'clap dancing' in it?

"hold me now...(clap and a dance)" I vividly remember this.....I've always called it cheesy 'clap dancing' I'm thinking of the right video right? [Smile]

Wham were well known for 'clap dancing'!

I refuse to try and defend George Michael's sexuality in this thread, especially since he's so keen for people to think he's gay - which he's not.

'Hold Me Now' is great. There was a quote from Andrew Ridgely that went something like this:

"The Thompson Twins have only been successful because the public have been waiting for groups like us (Wham!) and Culture Club to come out with new material."
