I loved her music in the 80s.

Telephone

You Could Have Been With Me

She did tons of hit songs....now you get someone that sings one song like Leona Lewis, and they are everywhere.

I can't understand how 1 song can catapult people to super stardom.

And of course the seasonal hit Christmas All Over the World, although I personally find New Edition's cover a bit better.

I think there's a difference between superstardom and being the star of the moment. Lots of artists enjoy major major success after their first song and for a time are seemingly everywhere, like Leona Lewis, or Kings of Leon.
Only time will tell if they last the test of time to become true superstars, or if the hype only lasts a short time.

I think these days the hype is bigger and more encompassing than it's ever been before, but it's always been there. I remember in the 80's hearing so many times that such and such singer or band (Lamahl, Mr Mister, Toni Basil to name a few) were the next big thing.

It's also impossible to say just who is going to have that indescribable "essence" that will keep them in the spotlight. Who would have suspected that Kylie Minogue would become such a global megastar? Or even Madonna? I remember at the time it seemed more likely that Cindy Lauper was going to be the more successful of the two.

All I remember was my mom's stressed expression when the Strut video came on the tv once in the 80's. Not surprisingly she told me to turn the channel. God forbid she read the lyrics to sugar walls!
