Thank god for the Rewind cause where else would I go with a question like this that could only occur to me when I'm alone in the car driving...It's just that I was listening to the radio and Van Halen's version of "Pretty Woman" came on one of the classic rock stations and it sounded so good! It got me to thinking about the band and the differences between David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar. Who did you guys like better as a lead singer?

David Lee Roth by far. Van Halen didn't sound like Van Halen with Sammy Hagar. They sounded like loud guitars and Sammy Hagar...

With David Lee Roth they were one of the best bands ever when they were on top of their game. With Hagar they were just amped up pop music. Hagar might have been able to add more in a musical sense but DLR was a way better showman and gave the band an identity.
In short IMHO there is no comparison.

Both. I love Van Halen and have a fan since 1979. Van Halen is not an 80s only band. They were a 70s, 80s,and 90s band. I saw them 3 times with DLR (1979, 1980, 1981) and once with Sammy (2004). I like both versions, except Van Cherone. I don't think Dave can sing as good as he used to and he didn't age that well either. Sammy can still sing good and still looks good. I still love all the VH songs (both versions). If I were to see them again, I hope it's with Sammy.

Such an unfair question Cindy in a world that cherishes the original. No doubt most votes will go to David Lee Roth including mine. However, I loved "5150" the first Van Hagar CD.

Yeah I gotta say, I'm with you guys on the DLR thing. You know, Dave did a good job vocally but his personality counted for alot more. What a character .

The concensus, anytime it's ever come up among anyone, seems to be DLR. For the record, I like 'em both, but as the better overall singer, Sammy is my choice. David Lee had better Van Halen songs for the most part, though (5150, and a handful of others, like "Right Now" are the only Samny era VH stuff I can really get into).
Sammy had way more good solo stuff, and what I like most of all, is he did power ballads and more keyboard/pop based stuff that David was reluctant to do. Of course, I can't say from personal experience, but Sammy also seems like more of a cool guy, whereas DLR is more of a showman. I hear one reason his own solo career never really could get going, is because he never really got along with people that well.
Then again, the "California Girls" cover is a classic, so I can't get on him too much, hehe.

actuly david lee roth was better but sammy hagar was good to the best recording with sammy hagar wood be far unlawful carnial knowlage the best van halen recordiung ever is 1984 i wish thay wood do a reunion tour with david lee roth as far as the van halen 3 cd goes the whole cd sucked with the ecption with the song fire in the holke thair is another place on the web to decuss all things van halen and the web site is eddievanhalen.com
