heavy metal wasn't that accepted in some of my friends nor my quarters back in the day. I could buy a few albums, but my mom wasn't having any of me purchasing that Iron Maiden album Killers because I loved the cover artwork. I also recall a friend who's parents were bummed when he brought the Motley album Shout at the Devil with the pentagram on the cover. I also remember my sis and me watching a Twisted Sister video and my grandfather looking less than impressed. The really wierd thing though is that my grandma(god bless her) took a liking to AC/DC for some reason. She liked Angus's school boy look and Brian Johnson's Cap. Go figure. So you guys have stories of some stiff resistance to some of the metal or punk in the 80's? Thank god I didn't know much about SSlayer, WASP, Venom or Celtic Frost back then or some parent communities might have gotten Tipper Gore darkening my doorway!

Alot of the ones p i s s e d my parents off. That's why there had to be alot of hiding going on as a kid. Slayer, Venom, Motley Crue, WASP were just a few. Thanks to Tipper Gore though they have those neat parental warning stickers now. Thanks Tipper. I didn't have any money when I was growing up, so buying all of those albums was outta the question for me. But I did watch a lot of MTV back in the day, when they actually played videos 90% of the time, the rest of the time was for MTV news or something like that. I used to put it on while cleaning at my Grandmother's every Saturday morning/afternoon, and she'd read her magazines and listen right along with me. I do remember her making a comment about how she did not like Stephen Pearcy's hair in the video for Round and Round! Ha,ha! I told her I didn't like his hair either! But I think my parents just chose to ignore a lot of stuff, so I can't remember them ever saying anything about the music or the way the bands looked back in the 80's.

Overkill's F*ck You got me in trouble, but my mother wasn't to harsh on me and found the humour in the record and the sleeve.
She didn't like the Carcass album sleeves or the Dismember ones during my very brief flurtation with Grind/Death metal(it was the way many UK Hardcore bands ended up)
Although Napalm Deaths The Kill still rules mofo's.

My parents never had a problem until Guns N Roses. They didn't like all the cussing. Then there was the time that Slash and Duff (I think it was the two of them) got on the American Music Awards, drunk and cussing. Needless to say GNR was banned. My friends weren't into stuff like that so it wasn't until I was older that they lifted the ban. Actually my mom kinda liked Metallica, so she never really complained about them. She liked some of Motley Crue's stuff too.

I don't know if Prince counts, but my mom never got upset every time I listened to one of his raunchy songs. In fact, yesterday, at a flea market, she let me buy his "Come" album!

I think my parents pretty much despised all my music...especially when I turned it up to 11!
They really hated my Slayer albums though and were less than impressed with my Annihilator "Alice In Hell" LP!

My friend had an album ("THEM" maybe?) where he was whispering in the beginning and y'know what, that was enough for me. He just rubbed me the wrong way. Didnt ALICE COOPER make him change his make-up in a lawsuit?

prity much aslmost what pettyfan said excep for the ban part i was able to get around the guns n roses thing by makeing a story the only bad thing thay ever done was put the girl in lies on the inside cover by the time the guns n roses thing happened i pretty much owned every thing i wanted i use to joing bmg a lot when i was growing up thats how come i hade so manny tapes/cds i wood get some free buy one get so many more free

I love King Diamond and Mercyful Fate, but i know he p*ssed off a lot of people...... including most of his original band! And it wasn't Alice who demanded the make-up change, it was Gene Simmons.

The only one my mom ever threw away was the album (upside down pentagram) version of the Shout At The Devil. Nothing else fazed her as a matter of fact the 1st tape she ver bought me was Love Gun by Kiss.

I used to have a huge MOTLEY CRUE flag in my room with the SHOUT AT THE DEVIL pentagram on there and ....y'know what...I'm beginning to think my mother NEVER went in my room because she never mentioned it. Either that or she didnt know what it was.

Heavy Metal wasn't really that huge here in the 80's. Of course the big bands had the odd hit - Twisted Sister, Van Halen, Motley Crue etc - but the music that was really big all over Australia was Pub Rock. "Hunters and Collectors", "Boom Crash Opera", "Cold Chisel", "The Angels".
I do remember seeing on the news the stories of kids who allegedly killed themselves because of backwards heavy metal lyrics, and even then as a kid I thought it was stupid. The only problem my parents had with pub bands was that we had to sneak into pubs to see them!
Probably the most infamous was Cold Chisel, fronted by the great Jimmy Barnes. I remember watching a story on 42 Minutes about them - Jimmy would drink an entire bottle of bourbon before heading on stage, and would drink a bottle of vodka during the set!
Now that I think about it, the only time I remember Mum saying anything about my music was when she heard the remix of Buffalo Stance on Neneh Cherry's album Raw Like Sushi. The opening line is "Give me a mother'flogging' breakbeat". I turned as red as a beetroot, but Mum just turned to me and said "Well that's nice isn't it?" lol
In fact, Mum generally liked a lot of the music we listened to back then, and much to Dad's chagrin we were often allowed to listen to our music in the car on long drives. I remember on a trip to Melbourne, my brother and I sang along to a mix tape I'd made off the radio and Mum was amazed that we'd learnt every lyric off by heart, including all the funny bits of "Living Doll" by Cliff Richards and the Young Ones and "Stutter Rap" by Morris Minor and the Majors.

I dont know why this just popped into my head but I was a huge DURAN DURAN fan and I remember once I was in the car with my Mom listening to Hungry Like The Wolf and it got to the end part where you can hear the girl moaning and my Mom got all embaressed. i think she evern turned the radio off!
THAT amazes me cuz after that I became a metalhead and mom would happily listen to my mixed tapes of MOTLEY CRUE, RATT, WHITESNAKE, what have you. Of course I had certain ones for the car that I KNEW didnt have smutty songs on them. Hahaha.

I never bought albums as a kid..I'd just have my friends make me mix tapes or watch MTV..stuff like that.
