Inspired by Marty McFly's thread about 90's songs that seemed 80's, I got to thinking about which song signalled to me that the 80's were well and truly over.

I remember when I first heard Faith No More's "Epic" that I had never heard anything like it before, and I realised that it was truly the first song that definately had no 80's influence whatsoever. So musically, the 80's ended for me in July 1990 when "Epic" debuted at #1 here in Oz. Ironically, it replaced Jon Bon Jovi's "Blaze of Glory", a song that couldn't be more 80's if it tried.

Oh this is so funny because I just stared singing this song out of no where today. The Chumbawamba Song--I get knocked down and I get up again never gonna keep me down.....

"Can You Feel The Love Tonight" was the first non-80's song I heard.

Didn't Janet Jackson start out the 90's with Miss You Much and Escapade?? I met my husband at the end of 1989....and I remember that song played all the time around then, but I wasn't sure if it was still 89, or 90. When I think of the beginning of the 90's...I think of the song " Unbelievable"- but I can't even remember who sings it...and I think of that Sinead O'Conner song-Nothing Compares to you-it played all the time.

Everytime I hear anything mentioned about a 90's song, I automatically think Alice in Chains' "Man in the Box" and Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit." These are a couple of the first grunge videos I remember seeing.......

Thanks for being inspired by my thread. [Smile]

Yeah, I'd say grunge was the beginning of the musical '90s. Also because it made hair metal so "not cool" almost overnight (unfortunately).

If I had to put a single line, it'd probably be around the end of 1991, but it was mixed for a few years. Songs from 1988-92 and even maybe up to '94 could flip either way with their influence.

For a long time, I thought "What I Am" by Edie Brickell was '90s, so I was shocked when I found out it was from '88. Red Hot Chili Peppers and Faith No More are good choices too. Even though I was still a kid at the time, I would personally say, when I started hearing rap sounds in popular music, that seemed like a new era to me.

I know the 90's was almost a year old when this group took the nation by storm....but Nirvana and the song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was the end of the 80's for me. I agree with Motley...enter 90's grunge.

I agree with everyone who mentioned grunge. I remember the video for "Jeremy." I also remember I loved Megadeth's Countdown to Extinction CD. I was never a big fan of theirs up until that point.

Grunge barely made an impact here. The only grunge hits were "Alive" by Pearl Jam and "Smells like teen spirit" and they only just scraped into the top ten. In fact, Wierd Al's "Smells like Nirvana" was a much bigger hit.

Not quiet in the same vein I suppose but I realised the 80's for music was coming to a close when Prince started to release more bad than good.

Actually, I think Prince's new songs are good, too. I own the Come album & plenty of others from that period. Wasn't his best IMO, but certainly not his worst, either. [Wink]
