An 80’s fanboy who often gets overlooked on these boards, Kevin Smith is probably one of my favourite writer/directors working in films today, and although it looks like the upcoming ‘Jersey Girl’ will be his sell-out movie. I’m hoping that the trailer’s just a clever ruse to bring in those people who propel Julia Robert’s flicks to the top of the box-office for weeks on end, or it could just be Kev’s turning his back on the old days and embracing mainstream middle American mediocrity. Either way, what do you guys think of the NJ stoner's filmography to date?

Kevin Smith rules. People like him and Tarantino are the crazy dreamers working at your local video store who made good. I love Clerks, especially the way he tosses pop culture references around. Seems he's a hockey fan too.

definitely like some of his movies, but this is the order i put them in:
1--chasing amy 2--mallrats 3--dogma 4--clerks 5--jay & silent bob strike back
i actually can't remember much about clerks b/c i've only seen it a few times. but i love when my best friend randomly goes into singing that "Berserker" song. i was pretty bored watching "jay & silent bob". definitely a let down. but i've always thought that "chasing amy", "mallrats", & "dogma" would make good 'books on tape' for a long road trip. those movies are mostly dialogue anyway.

Please include me in the list of Kevin Smith fans, "Chasing Amy" being my favorite despite starring that dork Ben Affleck. I love the scene where Silent Bob reveals "chasing Amy syndrome."
Tarantino definitely also. I gotta get my hands on a 10th anniversary RD disk.
This is one of those things I like to e-mail in the office when ppl are being incredibly inept about things:

Kevin Smith has recently been working on "Fletch Won", the third installment of the "Fletch" movies that starred Chevy Chase. Only this time, though, the new movie is a prequel, so someone else will play a younger Irwin Fletcher character (and it won't be Chevy).

‘Chasing Amy’ is a great film, but it seems that I have something else in common with teenage girls (besides being an avid reader of ‘Cosmo’ magazine) it seems that only that demographic, and me, like Ben Affleck.
I can understand why some folks think he’s an overrated ******** and media whore, but so far, I’ve managed to steer well clear of his rom-coms, tabloid column inches and attempts at being a Marvel superhero (though I do wanna see the ‘Daredevil’ director’s cut) and watched him turn in some fairly decent performances in ‘Chasing Amy’, ‘Goodwill Hunting’, ‘Dogma’ and the underrated ‘Changing Lanes’ with Samuel L. Jackson. He and Matt were also good sports for sending themselves up in ‘JASBSB’ whilst I even tolerated him in ‘Armageddon’, ‘Sum Of All Fears’ and Dazed & Confused’ (a top flick btw).
Hipstermom27, I just got the 'RD' 10th anniversary DVD! (The Tarantino autographed Mr Brown cover) and it’s probably the best DVD in my collection. You’ll dig it the most, especially the deleted scenes which feature stuff about Bonnie the nurse, different cuts (excuse the pun) of the ear scene and even a whole new character who got cut out of the movie altogether.
I hate to say it, but it feels like Kevin Smith may be surfing the wipe-out wave to obscurity; luckily, he’s too talented to disappear, but ‘Jersey Girl’ and the ‘Fletch’ re-imaged remake don’t sound too great (even though Jason Lee is ****ing king), perhaps if they didn’t call it ‘Fletch’ and just had Jason Lee playing a ‘Fletch’ type character, Chevy Chase IS ‘Fletch’. Kev’s other major project is a movie called ‘Ranger Danger’ which is a comic book sci-fi satire…apparently.

Kevin Smith does rule but it does seem like he is becoming a bit to mainstream. His use of characters in all his films is genious, Jason LeeRocks! Hedefinetely is the 90's version of John Hughes, i like it its genius

the word is that Smith is working on the movie version of cult 60s show 'The Green Hornet'...I can see it now: Ben Aff-Lack as Green Hornet and Jason Scott Lee as Kato (at least he's called Jason Lee)

Did you ever see the old SNL show when JT was the host? They did a WBK meets Tarantino skit that was out of this world -- the Sweathogs [hullo, how are ya...hi there...what, where] were gonna torch Mr. Woodman [stuck in the middle with you] until Jules & Vincent burst in...then Buscemi shows up uncredited...freakin' hilarious!

That sounds like my kinda humour Hipstermom, but alas, we dont get 'SNL' over here, and believe it or not, but I've never seen an episode of 'WBK' either JT is one of my fav actors though and I seem to have a high threshold of tolerance when it comes to JT moives (you're talking to one of the few people on Earth who actually paied to see the movie 'Michael' ).
I hear JT wants to host his own 'Tonight Show'/'Rat Pack' type programme with celebrity interviews and singing. I dont think its quite come to that yet (he's still got a few good roles left in him) but when he retires from films...I'd watch his show.

The fact that you've missed 30 years of SNL is just mind-boggling.
Re JT having a talk show, I would definitely watch, but might be concerned about a possible platform for Scientology, of which JT has been a member in good [?] standing for 30 years. That scares me.

I feel as if I never really missed all that much, if only because I followed most of ‘SNL’s talent in the movies, and as for ‘WBK’ I doubt they’ll ever show it again (they’d never be able to afford JT’s royalties) I remember when a TV station tried to re-run ‘Moonlighting’ only for it to come to an abrupt halt thanks to Bruce’s royalties (fair enough I guess, after all: he starred in it).
Would JT Dianetic bash his audience? To be fair though, some of what the Scientologists say is quite harmless (don’t worry I’m not going all ‘Mindhead’ on ya here ) and it seems to help some folks overcome certain obstacles in life, its just the whole pay-as-you-go thing and the infamous ‘if you wanna get rich: start a religion’ quote that concerns me a tad. So, on second thoughts…John: Hipstermom and I will watch your show, but don’t try and control our minds, cheers, thanks.

I'm gonna get all nostalgic here and say those early years of SNL were like no other...thank god for video & DVD. I once went to a theme party celebrating the 15th anniversary of SNL [humor me and don't do the math...or is it humour?]. Anyhoo...the 2 guys giving the party were nutty -- they changed costumes several times a night into different characters, The Festrunk Brothers [they like to swing], The Greek Diner [chee-burger, pepsi, chips], etc...they stayed in character the whole time...so much fun.
Kevin Smith news flash: he's cutting a wedding scene from "Jersey Girl" [due 3/26] because of the infamous Ben-Jen breakup.

sounds like you had a blast, I may have to get some old 'SNL' shows on DVD, though I heard it became really lame towards the end. Whats this I hear about some censorship lobby axing Howard Stern?! whats wrong with those people, soon the freaks of the freak kingdom are gonna have to say: "we can't stop here...this is bat country".
whats Smith doing with 'Jersey Girl'? I mean he cant do anything about the fact that J-Lo is in it, Kev can cut that baby all he likes but they'll still be some Bennifer moments he'll have to stick with. What I read is that KS is concerned that people will read "Bennifer" into the wedding scene so he decided to can it...OTOH she's not in the movie all that long before her character is killed off.
What's funny is that KS is Stern fan and he was on the show several months ago talking about the film...played a clip of J-Ho saying something ABOUT Howard Stern in character...now Stern is in trouble for "indecency" [um, you can always turn the radio to another channel], Ben & Jen are off for good, and Kev is probably worried about the movie tanking.
I don't love everything on Stern so if I don't, I change to a music station until there's better discussion going on. I don't listen to Rush or Imus, but my guess is some people do. Why can some of us have what we like and others have censorship? Don't get it.

Kevin Smith is withoubt a doubt the Grand Mutha-F*ckin' Pimp Daddy of N.J. The best thing to come outof "The Garden State" since Bruce Springsteen! I am obsessed with his films, and the "culture" surrounding it. I was so ecstatic when I walked into Media Play, and saw the "Bluntman", and "Chronic" action figures. Of course I had to buy 'em. Anyhoo, here's my ranking of his films...first "critically" 5)Jay and Bob Strike Back 4) Mallrats and all tied for 1st-Dogma, CLerks, and Chasing Amy!!
Now in order of how much I Like each one. All of 'em are first!!! Mwahahaha!! BTW Jersey Girl was an awesome film. Definitely more mainstream than his previous efforts, but unmistakably Kevin Smith. Check it out!!!
