A small film hit 32 cinemaplexes across the country on May 25, 1977, millions over budget, with its special effects crew scrambling to insert shots for opening night, and with the director in the hospital for a nervous breakdown. No big names, no concept the studios could see any interest in. So little was expected of it that Twentieth Century-Fox almost sold off the profits to a German tax shelter. And this would be mess of a film redefined the industry as it is today--not to mention that it pushed America back up so that everything could be as great as it was in the 80s. And all because one man from northern California dared to dream the impossible dream, much like his inhabitants of that galaxy far, far away did a long time ago.

Who on this forum was lucky enough to see Star Wars on its first opening weekend, and if so, so the rest of us can know, what was the experience in the theater like?

I didn't see it the first weekend as I was on vacation in Wildwood but I remember driving around and seeing lines around the block. I finally got to see it in the theater on my 9th birthday and then we went to Burger King for my birthday party.

I remember the long lines. I think I saw it late that summer sometime, when the lines died down...

Not the opening weekend in the US, but certainly the opening weekend in the UK (which I believe wasa few weeks later) I saw Star Wars in London's West End (one of the big theaters in Leicester Square).

Remember most vividly the start of the movie - with the sound starting behind you, and Princess Leia's ship flying into shot and away from you. Then the noise just grew immense, as the Imperial Cruiser entered the top of the screen - and just kept going......
